A homeless black man told police on videotape that he was fighting a race war and killed a 56-year-old woman at a Westchester County mall last week because she was white.
The man, Phillip Grant, 43, appeared in shackles and a bulletproof vest in a White Plains courtroom for a felony hearing Tuesday. In the 45-minute videotape played during the hearing, Grant told police "all I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die."
He claimed Connie Russo Carriero "was not an innocent victim _ because she was white."
Carriero, a legal secretary and mother of two grown children, was stabbed to death while walking to her car at the Galleria Mall parking garage. She was buried Tuesday.
Grant, a convicted rapist, was charged with second-degree murder and weapon possession in the knife attack. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 25 years to life in prison.
On the tape, Grant said he was sick of being harassed on the street for being a registered high-level sex offender. He said he wanted to draw attention to the fact that Westchester County never helped him with his mental problems.
He also told police he was not remorseful for the killing and would hurt white people again if he could.

I live in Wastechester myself. The papers made more of a big deal that the DA might charge a HATE CRIME than the fact that this woman was murdered.

I don't understand the charge. Actually, I do, but I don't agree with it. Sounds to me like he should be charged with premeditated murder in the first degree.

Maybe the DA just wants him off the streets for as long as possible fearing that a jury may go easy on the guy due to some defense attorney's blather about insanity.

This poor defenseless woman didn't deserve this horrible slaughter perpetrated on her. I predict the poor, homeless, discriminated-against, mentally-ill black guy whose mother kept him chained in a closet as a kid will be back on the streets within 10 years.

I gotta agree with you on this one. We live in a rural area that is relatively safe but I still have my kids in Tae Kwon Do. They are 2 belts away from a black belt and even though their friends drop out of the program left and right, my kids will stay in.
We should not have them.
The bottom line is that you must never consider yourself safe and always be on guard.

They don't go into much detail about the killing. What time of day was it? Were there no other witnesses to come to her aid?
The scum had already been convicted of rape. I wonder how little time he had served in prison for that. Perhaps he was yet another piece of sludge released early for "good behavior." In Waterford CT an innocent 27 year old woman was slaughtered the other day because another piece of filth who should have been executed was back on the street after serving a mere 12 years for killing a man. But it was only "manslaughter" so he didn't serve his whole 20 year sentence. What a joke.

I don't care about the hate crime thing but why is this not first degree murder. It was premeditated (not heat of anger type thing) and there was a premeditated motive. This is clearly Murder 1.
It happened in the middle of the day while she was at lunch break at the Galleria. This apparently happened on the 7th deck of the parking garage with this animal just lurking about. She apparently was putting bags in the trunk and this guy attacked her. I think people only really saw the aftermath and the cops caught up with this guy while he was already gone from the scene.
It just kills me when people sit and cry over these things yet do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to learn to defend themselves from killers. I think most people just want to ignore the reality of these things and go on as if they don't happen.
We are taught in out class this much when you know something for sure is going to happen:

Boy you are really on a pulpit aren't you? Paul, in the bible, called the justice system "The courts of the unjust" two thousand years ago. Your hope for justice and peace is not in yourself nor any human justice system.
