BLAST AT CITY TUBE STATION - FOUR BOMB EXPLOSIONS AROUND LONDON
Sky News ^ | July 7, 2005

Posted on 07/07/2005 1:45:13 AM PDT by RWR8189

There has been an explosion at Aldgate East underground station in London, causing the closure of the entire Tube network.

There are also reports that a second incident took place at Edgware Road station in north west London.

The Aldgate East blast was caused by "some kind of power surge", according to Tube infrastructure company Metronet, which is responsible for maintaining the Metropolitan line.

A spokesman said: "We don't know the extent of the problem yet."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene."

British Transport Police confirmed that there are "walking wounded" and said paramedics have responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".

"It's chaos, with people trying to work out what has happened," said a spokesman.

"All we know at the moment is that staff reported a loud bang at 8.49am. No one is sure what caused an explosion, but it is thought it could have been a collision, a power cut, or a power cable problem."

One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from Kings Cross when there was a huge flash.

The train stopped and people were using umberellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.

He added people were milling around Kings Cross covered in soot.

This made me laugh:

From a friend's Livejournal:

The Emanation of the Giant Albion

Old London, you must understand, is a cackling old whore. She is big, ugly and has blackened teeth and bad skin under the caked make-up; her warts are ill-hidden and her clothes not of the current mode. She is the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, throttling the life out of the Indies and the tea trade; she is Mother Gin, dashing her childrens' brains out against the steps in the rookeries of St. Giles. She is a villainess of the blackest stripe, of the old school. Mind your purse when you walk with her, because her fingers are nimble and her morals as open as her old sewers.

But she's built on the bones of Boudicca and the Gloriana herself; she's seen kings and queens and lords and she's seen a fair few of them lose their heads. She won't lose hers over such a little trifle as this. Jacobites and Chartists and Fenians and Roaring Boys and Nazis and the IRA have all boasted that they'll bring the old strumpet to her knees, and where are they now? They cast themselves against her and she wore them all down in the end.

This is the city of Hawksmoor and Wren; the city of the Ratcliffe Highway and the confessions of de Quincey, of Spring-heeled Jack and Francis Dashwood, of small quarrels in Deptford and great reckonings at Tyburn, of old Leather Apron and his red days of autumn. What do these poor fool people imagine they can teach old London of wickedness?

London's bones were old before the Romans came. Fire has scoured her flat; plague raddled her and still she reels out of the shadows, too much make up, stinking of cheap gin, skirts ridden up and though you know you shouldn't, still you can't resist her leering grin and promise of adventure in the dark.

History sits to one side plotting new abuses to heap upon her, this fallen woman of a royal line, and she endures defiant and unbowed, with a twisted grin and a dare. Don't worry about old London. She's seen off her share of black eyes in the past. Save your pity for those who have done it, for when London finds them she'll show none, like the cool and ruthless businesswoman that she is; no. In lieu of pity, she'll show them her own justice.

First of all, being an ally is not being a 'close friend.' The government of Saudi Arabia is working with us to eliminate terror within the country, not actively working against us.

While it is obvious that the government there has not done enough in the past, and that SA has bred terrorists, there is a significant difference between the government there and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam's brutal Baathist regime in Iraq.

We're not going to militarily take out the government of every country where terrorism exists. This is a multi-faceted war, and if you think it's not being fought in Saudi Arabia, you're missing some information.

President Bush has referred to them time and again as being friends, including using the term "close friend" (not just when he's had various members of their government visiting his ranch, either), but regardless...

Yes, they are not the Taliban, and yes, they are fighting terrorists.

However, they are not going after the extremists, the Imams, the temples that are still spreading religious hatred, the money that is flowing out. There is a lot of anti-American/Western preaching going on in Saudi Arabia and it's not being clamped down upon.

Thinking of it as fighting a house fire, by hosing down the lawn around it, and not directly going after the source. By continuing to let it burn, every now and then the fire is going to jump the lawn and spread.

I know I'm not the only one who wouldn't be surprised if there was a Saudi connection to the London bombings..

The British and US media have shown remarkable restraint by not publishing pictures of the 700 injured, let alone the dead.

Yeah. The same restraint they showed on 9/11. The US press showed exactly one fatality, the fire dept Chaplin they falsely thought was gay....

(If the British government had a lick of sense they'd forbid the press from showing any bodies)

I'm not defending the Saudis..........just deliniating the differences between the countries where we have intervened militarily, and those we have not.

Your first cryptic post to me implied that you thought that we should invade Saudi Arabia militarily and kill the terrorists there.

I'm just making the distinction between the necessity of invading Afghanistan and Iraq, and your implication that we should do the same in Saudi Arabia.

Neither of us knows what kinds of pressures are being put on the Saudi government by the Bush administration behind the scenes to go after the Imams and shut down the rhetoric.

btw.....I wouldn't be surprised if there were Saudis involved in any terrorist attack...........but that's not the point, IMO.

That the government is actively working to fight terrorism, and is therefore not subject to military invasion of their sovereign territory?

Besides which, many Saudi terrorists have gone into Iraq and we're killing them there.

One can kill 'mosque-itos' in the surrounding countryside, or one can drain the swamp.

If ya don't drain the swamp, you can spend millennia swatting mosque-itos...

Your right, I didn't mean to give that impression. The only thing we can do in regards to SA, is to get off middle eastern oil and completly pull out of the region, and that still may leave us vulnerable.

Thank Dick.  He cried to make a difference in the War on Terror.  He did.  He gambled to humiliate Bush out of office but humiliated himself - though not enough.  Dick worries about his hurt feelings.  I choose placing my sympathies with the families and victims.  A war is waging.  While this Senator frets about offending other people, innocent civilians are being murdered by cowards in a war.

Thanks Dick!

I agree completely that we need to get off ME oil. The problem with that is right here in our own country with leftists and environmental wackos who won't let us produce and refine our own oil and become energy independent.

(Since this discussion is off topic and this thread is getting even longer, I'm going to bow out of our conversation now....)

Unfortunately morals are not absolutes. They are accepted on an individual basis. Most people accept the moral code of their parents, which in this country is typically a Judeo-Christian code. But in the middle east, the ayatollahs have bee shoving a code of death down the throats of the people for at least 3 generations and so their code says it's OK to kill innocents.

Your code may be right and their's wrong, and I encourage you to go straighten them out - Good Luck! But according to their code it is quite logical to blow up themselves and as many other people as possible. Only when their code changes will they change.

Unfortunately, I don't accept the "different strokes for different folks" situational ethic argument. Not for me.

Evil is evil, no matter who you are and where you are. Deliberately murdering innocent people is evil, and trying to justify such actions through religious, cultural or legal arguments are false arguments and God will not accept these arguments. . .no matter what the death cult says.

I agree with you that evil is objective, not subjective, and therefore these people are evil. My code is pretty much the same as yours.

My point is that these people are quite logical and rational, based on their moral(?) code in what they do. Their code says that it is good to kill innocents and infidels and if they die too, that's good too. So it's quite rational for them to do the things they do.

The solution is: 1. You either have to deprogram them, or 2. You have to kill them. I don't #1 will work very well.

save the nice platitudes, I want revenge.

I'm so freaking tired of people saying "my prayers are with you" and then going on with their lives.

We will have time enough for prayers when the battle is won.

It is past time that the world woke up and dealt with these barbarians. No quarter should be asked or given.

I am hopeful that we have heard the last of that "flypaper strategy" bullshit. If this attack doesn't bring home the fact that the terrorists are not "pinned down" in Iraq nothing will.

Unfortunately I suspect that some people (including some of King George's folks) will be very eager to pin this on one of the countries on the Wargasm Party's hit list. I hope I am wrong about that.

There were. . .but the action was justified under the concept of "just war."

Just war permits this because of the rule of "proportionality."

This means the attack on Japan was allowed because the expected military gain was worth the expected civilian loss. Terror attacks aim to murder the innocent, not achieve a military gain. Terrorists intent to to harm the innocent, as that is their goal, whereas the attack on Japan had a military objective that was deemed to be proportionate when balanced against the expected civilian loss. It was not an attack with an evil aim, as is a terror attack.

Because it was anticipated that we would experience close to one million casualties if we invaded Japan, then the dropping of the bomb was justified. Just War by Tucker, Just and Unjust War by Walzer are excellent reads on the subject. Also, Just War Against Terror by Jean Bethke-Elshtain is timely and informative.

Thanks.

But objective is very subjective!

The Muslum Army could just say that the way to stop the government and military of that government is to get the "TAXPAYERS", to put pressure on their leaders.

For the taxpayers to be the target removes the far-awayness concept of a war. So it becomes more of a point of safety to them because they are on the frontline.

So, the choice of target is military because it could result in England, "Doing a Spain".

Everthing is subjective except for hard science, and even then there are exceptions.

The difference is the "intent" of the act.

If the intent is just and proportional then the act is acceptable (however tragic).

If, like mooslime terrorist attacks, the intent is clearly aimed at causing the innocent to suffer with not proportional military gain, then it is an evil act.

Attacking people to put pressure on a government is evil, as this violates the concept of "Strategic Devastation." Strategic Devastation is indiscriminate and without purpose except to cause pain on the innocent. . .again, with no proportional military gain.

Attacking people through terror attacks is evil because it has no aim other than to cause the suffering of the innocent.

Complicated stuff and that is why the military has JAG's at all levels. . .to help the commander make the difficult moral judgment calls.

you wee not abrupt at all, I was never in the service and like to take a position that gets more information out in the open. I am sure the books you recommend are great reads on the topics, but I am up to my eyeballs in alligators and they are draining the swamp. My wife does work in airline/airport/homeland security and I have actually done some engineering work in explosive detection systems for a company selling systems to the FAA.

But as you said it is subjective, but the point is our goal is not to target anyone buthe bad guys.

So that we don't profile I think we should now go out and look into the people at the Baptist churches in case they have people there planning on bombing any of our trains or subways, you can never tell about those Baptists, heck in tht case the Budists too...lol
