Governor to close Schiavo inquiry [State attorney to Jeb: Michael S did not cause wife's collapse.]

LARGO - In what could be a final chapter in the legal saga of Terri Schiavo, Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe says he could find no evidence that Michael Schiavo caused his wife's collapse 15 years ago.

In a June 30 letter to Gov. Jeb Bush, McCabe suggested ending the state's inquiry into the case.

Bush responded Thursday in a two-sentence letter to McCabe: "Based on your conclusions, I will follow your recommendation that the inquiry by the state be closed."

Bush asked McCabe last month to investigate Schiavo's collapse on the morning of Feb. 25, 1990. He cited questions left unanswered by an autopsy and inconsistent statements from Michael Schiavo about the time he found his wife on the floor of their apartment.

McCabe appointed two of his most seasoned prosecutors to review the evidence. They found nothing to indicate Michael Schiavo hurt his wife....

the time to collect any physical evidence is long since past.

it sounds like you are saying the local police botched this case a long time ago. Maybe they did. I don't know.

Yes, this is a good object lesson for everyone.

Get those wills and living wills written and filed and give copies to your attorney and put a copy in safe deposit.

However, I don't want a law made that a parent can dissolve a marriage if their child is in a coma. For better or for worse, God has established that spouses decide for their spouses if their will isn't written down otherwise, as God has established marriage as a higher and more inviolable bond that parent-child.

If new laws are needed, they are needed to insure a thorough investigation of circumstances at the time any person becomes unable to communicate, to be sure they weren't put in that state by foul play.

No, marriage is not solvable through sickness no matter severity of the sickness.

Isn't he the former governor of Florida?

No, he's the current governor - and the only GOP governor ever re-elected in the history of this state.

The fact he could not "cancel" a marriage contract or correct a possible botched police investigation years ago does not void his many history-making accomplishments as governor. At least not to a person who is judging his record fairly.

Then, it seems to me - you are perfectly happy with the outcome of this matter because you do not accept divorce under any circumstances whatsoever. I would just say that others disagree with you, and do understand why some people divorce.

You must be happy with the outcome of this matter. But others are not, because her wishes were not known in writing.

If you have a different wish, in writing, no law and no parent would be able to alter your wish. That was not the situation in this case. There was nothing in writing.

The headline as you edited it is a lie.

The officials found only that they would be unable to find anything if they looked. That is itself a questionable finding -- speaks more to political turpitude or laziness -- but it is what it is.

Your headline is a lie.

I don't know that others agree with you -- others I have talked to believe the parent-child bond is the bond that should have been honored in this matter. Not the husband-wife bond, since he eventually had another family.

Are we discussing his record or this pretend inquiry?

Discuss whatever you want. I thought my post #1 was a good opening to a dicussion of this matter. If you disagree, that's fine.

McCabe: " Michael, did you hit your wife and cause this?"

Michael: " Absolutely not! I loved Terri!!"

McCabe: " Governor, he is innocent. He SAYS he didn't do it".

Governor Bush: " Well then, if MS says he didn't do it, that is good enough for me"!!!!

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Misleading subject line. What he said was, there is no evidence that Michael Schiavo caused his wife to collapes. The subject line wrongly implies that there was a finding that Schiavo did not cause her collapse.

You edited the headline, the statement that you wrote and enclosed in brackets is a complete misrepresentation of the report.

I have answered you three times now. Try using the post feature and maybe you will see the LIMIT on the number of words in a headline it imposes.

"...it sounds like you are saying the local police botched this case a long time ago. Maybe they did. I don't know."

I'd say, "botched," is probably too strong a word and the record that we have to go on now, is obviously less than complete. Fuhrman is regularly criticized for "Monday morning quarterbacking," but IMHO that criticism comes from those unfamiliar with police work. The cops that were dispatched to the scene arrived after the paramedics appeared to be in control of the situation and there were no apparent signs of struggle (though Fuhrman points out there is generally, by all accounts a missing 40 minutes).

I can not characterize the cops as having "botched," any potential investigation, and perhaps the best parallel I can draw is that there are things they probably should have done at the scene or at the hospital, just like you should do a complete walk-around of your car and visually check all four tires before you drive anywhere. Of course, very few people actually do this and hop in assuming the tires are in good condition unless there is something very obviously wrong, and most of the time they're right. If the responding officers were negligent, it was the type of negligence probably more than 75% or better (my guess) of patrol officers would have made under the circumstances.

Thanks for clarifying that. Now, see if you can explain to some people on this thread there is a limit in the number of words that can be posted in a headline! :)

No, he didn't cause her collapse. But he did cause her death when he had her dehydrated and starved to death 15 years later.

In my religion, only adultery is an accepted excuse for divorce, not murder.
It's till death do we part, even if my husband kills me.

Thank you, that's a very good example of...well, never mind, it's a very good example though. :)
