Recovery crews were hampered by heat, dust and other "difficult conditions," Apparently one of the "difficult conditions" is the presence of huge numbers of rats.

Intriguing scenario - but I don't know about it being operationally efficient. All it would take during that hour was someone to get curious and discover one of those bombs riding around, and excrement would hit the security fan. Lock downs and evacuations. Plus, would the lone bomber have to lug ALL of them around at once, or return to a cache every time, raising the chances of suspicion and having the effort of the whole operation wasted? The straight line from point A to point B would be to have multiple bombers fan out from different locations on mass public transportation so as to stay "lost in a crowd", get on-station, then do their thing whether it was setting timers or personally going out in a blaze to receive their "paradise". I think that way, it would improve chances for success by keeping the bombs under their supervision until time for use, and if one bomber were to be stopped, there could still be some others left to continue on.

For those that want more facts, just posted this from the BBC which now is going to allow the word Terrorists into their utterings: Is the BBC implying they aren't "freedom fighters"? How judgemental of them.

Strange that one bomb should go off about an hour after the rest. Was one bomber late or chickened out until he heard of the others going off? Was that planned or unplanned?

'Could you or somebody else please explain to the demolition challenged the difference between homemade explosives and the more professional kind alluded to here. Thanks.'
On the most basic level, the speed at which the material detonates, measured in feet per second (fps).

The explosions were so destructive that authorities haven't been able to identify a single bodyI find that hard to believe. Very hard.

High explosives are not made from fertilizer, but some of the basic compounds that can be used as fertilizer are in them.
Some HE:
TNT
Comp B
PETN
RDX
TorPex
C-4
SEMTEX
etc. (not explosive)
The list is long because there are specific uses for certain HE products that maximize their effects. In quantity, all will spray frags attached or cause blast effects.

I guess what you're looking for is that there is a composition, quality and calorie difference between commercially manufactured industrial/military grade explosives and the kind mixed up from ingredients and components procured at hardware/grocery stores. Then it comes down to the level of sophistication of how it's detonated.

If it goes wrong, then no one will claim it, but if it kills enough people, then all the groups want the glory, it helps with recruiting new bombers.

Maybe some of what has saved Los Angeles is the inability to get around on time anywhere.
I think our most vulnerable point are the ports where ships can float in a nuke with a timer and we wouldn't have a clue.
The second major target in my opinion would be to use shoulder rockets while baseball games are in progress.
The softest target to hit would be any of the multiplex theaters where they could leave a bomb under the seat at a theater and set it off when they are outside.
