No surprise here that a former producer for CNN would be offended by the notion that "Jesus loves you." How inoffensive is that statement? Yeah, if you don't believe in Jesus, then as my sister said to me, it's like saying "the tooth fairy loves you" -- so why take it down? Conscience problems seems to be the real explanation, but they of course rationalize it with this 'right not to be offended' garbage.

For David Bernknopf we'll build a small companion bench that says "Jesus doesn't believe in you either" ;)

I consider myself a Christian woman, but think that bench as described in the article has no business at the entrance to the school. Have you read John Macarthur's "Ashamed of the Gospel"? You should. (keep in mind the publisher changed one paragraph at the beginning of Chapter 6 which made it sound like he endorsed works-righteousness and he issued a clarification to be fixed in subsequent editions)

Moral Absolutes Ping.
The founders didn't want Congress mandating a state church -meaning a particular sect. This words on the bench have nothing to do with with "there shall be no establishment" and everything to do with "and no prevention of free exercise".
The secularists will not be satisfied until no mention of God (except in jest or offense) is allowed in public.
Personally, I would not be offended by expressions of religious belief that differed from mine. But I am highly incensed by the secularists' war against all religious symbols, holidays, memorials, and everything else that reminds people of God. The founders had no such intent.
"It is the duty of all men in society, publicly, and at stated
seasons, to worship the SUPREME BEING, the great Creator
and Preserver of the universe. And no subject shall be hurt,
molested, or restrained, in his person, liberty, or estate, for
worshipping GOD in the manner most agreeable to the dictates of
his own conscience; or for his religious profession or sentiments;
provided he doth not disturb the public peace, or obstruct others
in their religious worship." --John Adams
(If the simple phrase "Jesus loves you" is considered a disturbance of the peace, then all hope is lost.)
Freepmail me if you want on/off this pinglist.

When I was there there were Jesus posters and stickers and flyers all over the place. Looks like they overlooked the bench when they cleaned house!

"My biggest fear is that this is going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal cost that otherwise might go to education," he said. That's probably a good thing considering it's a publick screwel.

One can, however, argue the bench has historical significance, since the public schools were originally created so children could learn to read the Bible. SHHHHH! No one's supposed to know about that!!! Haven't you been reading your revisionist history books enough lately?

It's only been there a few years, not long enough to have any historical significance. You missed the point.
