Sen. McCain [R-AZ] Strong Words On Supreme Ct Nomination at Dallas Fundraiser: 'During the campaign, President Bush said he will appoint judges who will strictly interpret the constitution... thinking anything else is either amnesia or ignorance... elections have consequences... whomever he nominates deserves an up or down vote and no filibuster... and an up or down vote is what we will have'...
That's my point, if conservatives are counting on the likes of a McCain to place a conservative justice, then we are starting in a deep, deep hole.
that's total rubbish.
so in 2008, there will be only 6-7 justices on the SCOTUS? I'll take that bet and you'll be very poor
Couldn't the Republicans in the Senate filibuster the Hillary Clinton nominations if she picks liberal wackos?
Yeah, sure. Whatever you say, MeCain. Just don't expect us to believe you.
Did he happen to say which side he'd support in a floor vote?
"Couldn't the Republicans in the Senate filibuster the Hillary Clinton nominations if she picks liberal wackos?"
Yep, they sure could. Would they? And would they stick to it? Don't make me laugh.
BUSH IS A WHIMP HE WILL DO A RODNEY KING
We give McCain a lot of grief but he is decidely pro-life, and that will help us here. Democrats are going to look like the jerks they are for stonewalling and McCain will do a good job of making them look that way -- he is, after all, perceived to be very "fair"
Doesn't matter. What matters is that McCain has a long, long track record of being manipulated by liberals and of going along with them. I don't care what he thinks about abortion if he's not a fighter who will STAND with us.
McKook tries to redeem himself. Big deal.
Sounds like somebody running for President on the GOP side...I guess he's decided not to run on the Dem side.
I just called his Arizona office and thanked him for his comments of strong support for the President's nominee. They took my name and address and are forward the comments to the D.C. office. Come on, folks, some of you might not like him very much, but if he does stand tall in this battle, give him kudos. You have plenty of time to blast him during the next battle.
D.C. office --- 202-224-2235
I find this hard to believe it came from McCain's own mouth. Did he and Teddy break up?
Sorry I am so late getting back to you---babysitting was a rough one today...both grandkiddies...
Okay, when I saw John McCain say that he would NOT go along with the "nuke option", he was sitting in the ballpark, I thought it was a Red Sox game.. I may have been wrong about the team...
Maybe the Nationals...sorry, but I remember distinctly seeing him, cause he was wearing a baseball cap...it was hard to take him seriously...
Yup. He's got the squishy moderates and enough liberals Democrats are okay with him. He needs to attempt to get some conservative votes. He'll be in the tank if he opposes any conservative nominee.
Sorry it took so long to answer....
WE will not forget---
BTW, Chrissy on Hairball has his panties in the biggest wad in his life, I think...
He has this mad look on his face, like someone just stole his wife...David Gregory is lying totally about this Karl Rove story..and the one person on the show to speak up for Karl keeps getting cut off and interuppted by Chrissy and David Gregory...
I still don't McCain. Why oh why can't the good folks in Arizona vote him out?
If McCain could successfully use his influence to assure Scalia-like originalist judges and break any filibuster the Democrats might propose, he might just be on his way to becoming the Republican nominee in 2008. That is the one thing that could make the base forget about some of betrayals in the past.
It will go the way of the Bolton nomination and will be vacant until HRC is elected in 2008.
I wouldn't bet on your premise. Bush will take this fight to the people, and will use it in the 2006 elections. The Democrat resistance will start to pi$$ the populace off to no end, because Bush can use all of the Democrat arguments over all the past issues, and call it simple obstructionism. Handcuffing the Supreme Court will not go over well.
I think McCain got the message that he needs to be on the right side of this issue to have any chance in 2008.
Bush, for his legacy's sake and for the sake of the Republican party, needs to keep his promise on the issue as well.
You bet he does. He has to realize just how bad the law was written, and how much it was abused in 2004.
Perhaps he finally realized he'll need conservatives to get the GOP nomination in 2008. The fool doesn't realize it's too late for him.
Yeah John, put your actions where your mouth is fella.
I have a hard time accepting this from him, and he is the only reason why.
McCain is the one who sabotaged the end of the filibuster that would have guarenteed constitutionalists on the Court because he didn't want his competitors for the nomination to get credit (Frist, Allen) after he foolishly put it out there he'd vote no, and couldn't take it back without losing face.
he won't win back the base with this blatant ploy, since he is the reason we're in this mess now rather than had it settled a couple months ago.
I'm willing to use him, but I don't trust him, and his motives are purely selfish.
Don't you think McCain will be on "our" side on the Supreme Court because he expects Bush to nominate Alberto Gonzales anyway? So, it's a freebie for McCain and his 2008 nomination prospects.
Sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it? I do believe that's one of McCain's best skills. Bluster...self-serving bluster. McCain may have made this imperial declaration, but he will switch lanes in a heartbeat if it benefits him politically.
I like this as a description of McCain.
No, he was not. He actively campaigned for President Bush.
McCain-flip flop light....
I don't trust McCain in the least. I hope someone is watching Bush's back.
I knew there was a worm in that apple!
So do ill conceived compromises.
McCain still has time to repent.
Presidential run in full swing. After the reaction from the fantastic 7, he knows he needs to make a right turn or kiss his presidential primary seeya. That's what I can't stand about the man. Stick my fingers in the air and then make a decision. Doesn't take a man to do that.
yup.
he's in.
"McCain is actually going to be on OUR side on this one?"
Perhaps he has been loyal to the other side so long they are starting to count on him---so he gets off on betraying them now.
I'll believe it after it happens. My faith in McCain is totally defunk!
If it were'nt for McCain's self-promoting efforts in May we would not even be discussing the prospect of SCOTUS nominee filibuster today. McCain is a turd.
After hearing Specter's brain fart today (O'Conner to Chief Justice), it occurs to me that there are more than a few Republican senators that do not want to see a conservative originalist ascend to the SCOTUS. I would count McVain among them.
LOL! Great point!
Plus, he has seen the polling data, and it reveals that the majority were not in favor of his "deal" or of democrat obstructionism. He has deduced it is time to jump to the head of the parade (even if the parade is not going in the direction he wants). He suffers delusions of being President, not realizing that far too many think he is either a pitiful opportunist (at best) or mad (at worst).
I wonder if Dubya told them in the meeting today that either they play fair or the nuclear option is exercised.
We shall have a nominee, I won't guarantee you and I will be happy with him/her, but the nominee will be right of center. I'll believe McCain when it happens, but he wants to run for President, and not as a Dem, so I'm encouraged that we'll also have an up or down vote. Nominee will be SCJ when it's over.
So lets use it to our advanatge. let his poll numbers go up, give him the energy he needs to help carry Bushes nominations through, then we can get back to business. All contingent however on Bush nominating real Conservatives. Gonzales for Stevens, fine but not as one of the first two.
i don't understand, McCain is a republican? i'm so confused.
