Novak: Plame Source 'No Partisan Gunslinger'
NewsMax.com ^ | July 12, 2005 | Carl Limbacher

The Washington press corps and their Democratic friends have been too busy this week chasing down Karl Rove to notice that columnist Robert Novak has offered a tantalizing clue about the identity of just who it was who leaked Valerie Plame's name to him back in July 2003.

And judging from Novak's revelation - it wasn't Karl Rove.

Apparently it's been a while since any of the big media's newshounds bothered to read Novak's follow-up column on the Plame case on Oct. 1, 2003, where he talked about the man (woman?) who spilled Plame's name and thereby, according to Dems, committed the crime of the century.

"During a long conversation with a senior administration official," he wrote, "I asked why Wilson was assigned the mission to Niger. He said Wilson had been sent by the CIA's counterproliferation section at the suggestion of one of its employees, his wife. It was an offhand revelation from this official, who is no partisan gunslinger."

No partisan gunslinger?

Even fans of Mr. Rove would be hard-presseed to deny he's a "partisan gunslinger" - just the kind of person Novak says his leaker wasn't.

Could Novak have been lying to protect Mr. Rove? Perhaps. But by the time he wrote the above words, the Plame leak was already under investigation by the Justice Department, a develpoment that would have guaranteed that he'd have to repeat that falsehood under oath.

I wonder if it's Powell?

Excuse my ignorance, but why isn't Novak being threatened with/in jail like the other reporters? Has he already testified?

He already testified before the grand jury about the source for his story and what the source had said.

This is not a crime.. Whoever talk to Novak didn't commit a crime by merely stating "Wilson's wife Valerie Plame got him his ticket to Niger."

I'm betting it was Sec. of State Powell. In 'off the record speak' by reporters, they usually refer to someone like the Sec. as "a senior administration official."

An advisor like Karl Rove doesn't get that appellation.

Besides, who would you go to if you were wondering why someone outside of the State department (retired) was assigned this task?

Won't the libs be angry if it turns out to be their favoritie.

Maybe Novak's source was Wilson.

After all,

Harold Ford told Imus this morning that Wilson is a patriot.

My understanding is that Novak testified a while ago.

One of the many problems here is that the media cannot & will not wait for the investigation to run its course.

"partisan gunslinger"

Rove personifies the term.

Good on him.

None of these people spoke out on the Sandy Berger story, which is much more disturbing than identifying Wilsons wife as someone who works at the CIA!

I don't think it's Colin Powell. Just took a look at some lefty sites, one in particular: Grand Jury Hears Testimony From Powell By The Associated Press, The New York Times, Sunday 01 August 2004

Jest for an example...BUT!!! at the same link, this:

-snip

That case and its potentially explosive political consequences were the subject of FTW's June 4th story, "COUP D'ETAT: The Real Reason Tenet and Pavitt Resigned from the CIA on June 3rd and 4th; Bush, Cheney Indictments in Plame Case Looming," by Michael C. Ruppert with additional reporting by Wayne Madsen.

--end snip.

Could be tinhat stuff, but I usually find my best revelatory stuff on liberal sites -- given that they create all these dust devil conspiracies against Republicans...

Tracking the drumbeats here...

Thank you, for that link, that must have taken some digging. It would make perfect sense if Foley was Miller's source inside the CIA, but so would Valerie Plame. They were both WMD experts (supposedly, I use the term expert very loosely, here). It has been my contention all along that Miller is covering up more than the source of the name of Valerie Plame.

The more that I think about it, the more sense that it makes that this could be the source for both cases of leaks from inside the CIA and the target of criminal charges. Good work.

Listening to Rush... it all just keeps circling back to NYtimes and Mandy Grunwald. Mandy ran Hillary's NY Senatorial campaign. Is probably also involved in Hillary's latest-greatest campaign. Her last. I mean.

I'm not sure that the fact that Powell testified would rule him out as the source. It's assumed that Novak testified as well. Every WH aide was directed to write a letter confirming their absolute rejection of any confidentiality they might have required from any reporter.

The issue doesn't seem to be whether the source leaked in contravention to a law any more, but whether there was some other form of criminality like perjury.

I think you are right. How about an invetigation into whether or not a sitting President has been "set-up" by his political opponents -- to take down a sitting President in the middle of a War. I think it also has to do with who "gave the heads up" to a group of people under investigation by FBI/Homeland Security? And then there's niger
