Clinton defends wife's abortion remarks
Monterey Herald ^ | 7/13/05 | Devlin Barrett - AP

Posted on 07/13/2005 1:32:37 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

WASHINGTON - Former President Clinton, defending his senator-wife's statements on abortion, said Wednesday that Democrats are held to a double standard.

The comment came during remarks to Campus Progress, a left-leaning student group. He said young people in his party should speak directly to conservative voters.

He contended that Republicans have defined the abortion debate in a way that boxes in Democrats.

"So for example, if you're a Democrat and you have sort of normal impulses, you're a sellout, like when Hillary said abortion is a tragedy for virtually everybody who undergoes it, we ought to do all we can to reduce abortion," Clinton said.

"All of a sudden," he continued, the media began asking, "'Is she selling out? Is she abandoning her principles?' But if John McCain, who's pro-life, works with Hillary on global warming, he's a man of principle moving to the middle."

"It's nuts," the former president said.

A speech by Sen. Clinton in January in Albany, N.Y., led to a flurry of speculation that she was shifting slightly to the right. In that speech, she called abortion a "sad, even tragic choice" and said her husband's administration had done a great deal to reduce the number of abortions in the United States.

Conservatives and abortion-rights foes portrayed the speech as a sign that she was edging toward the middle with an eye toward the 2008 presidential campaign. Her supporters, however, said she was simply repeating positions she had stated since her 2000 campaign for the Senate.

It's not a double standard.
It's Cognitive Dissonance.

"Abortion is a great tragedy and I fully support it." -- it's an insane comment, but Democrats say it all the time.

One would have to be believable to be a sellout. There's no way that I believe Hillary to be even remotely pro-life, much less "normal."

Whaaa...?

So when Republicans say we needed to go into Iraq but regret the loss of innocent life, Nancy Pelosi and company say "Well of course, we know that" as opposed to comparing Bush to Hitler?

What Clinton is saying is that since the libs FEEL BAD about it, they shouldn't be held accountable for murdering children. Oh, ok, sure, Bill.

At this point I think it's a good thing he keeps yapping. His schtick plays to the robots but the rest of us are sooooo tired of him. He's like a lounge lizard who's there and dying to talk to anyone no matter what time of day or night you go in for a quick drink.

I dunno. Somehow, I think Bill Clinton would do himself a favor by avoiding any reference at all to impulses, normal or otherwise.

Someone here needs to research that claim!

He's smarter than that. He knows that the media and the rest of the wacko left want her to celebrate the murder of babies right along with them. If she evidences any difference from that lockstep view then some of the democrat constituency might see that the abortion emperor has no clothes and really is murder.

"But if John McCain, who's pro-life, works with Hillary on global warming, he's a man of principle moving to the middle"

That's because:

1) McCain's not a conservative

and

2) The media actually believes humans have something to do with global warming.

Clinton keeps triungulating. By defending his wife to leftists, he's showing the US electorate that she is being criticized by the Left. He's hoping that the public would then perceive her as a centrist! I hope that people don't get fooled and understands that she's as leftist as ever, she's just trying to get elected!

It's deja vu all over again......we're getting two for the price of one.

And this twofer will continue if she gets into the White House.

Out of all the sleaze that embodied the Clinton Occupation, the selling of the Lincoln Bedroom ranks up there near the top. The Clinton era was one of debauchery, elitism and a level immaturity to found in kids ages 4-7. The condom tree, Monica, Filegate, TravelGate FortMarcyParkGate are just a few of the blatant nosethumbing jobs the Clintons and their ilk did about once every six months. To know that Hillary still has a shred of credibility, and is a senator to boot, is most disheartening. It enrages me no end that these two charlatans continue to prey unabated on America, an probaly will continue to do so for many moons to come.

No, Bill, it wasnt about sex. It was about the disgust and revulsion you evoked with scandal after scandal, criminal act after criminal act. Now go away, both of you. Bill, your legacy was signed, sealed and delivered, they day you looked the nation in the eye and said,"I did not have sexual relations...."

Good point. I'm kind of amused by those FReepers who find her some sort of formidable political Goliath. In a presidential race, I don't think she'd even make it out of the Democrat debates. She cannot think on her feet, and her shrillness really turns people off.

If the media wasn't constantly in there propping her up, she'd be toast.

It's liberal left wing Loony media, don't ask us on the right to solve your problems Billy-Bob. You either have moral values, a respect for life, or you don't. You either think killing babies is ok because they are inconveniant, or you don't. Teach your kids to respect themselves, their future, and abstain until they are ready to start a family. Sex isn't meant to be a sporting event like soccer that everyone should participate in as soon as they are able. Save it for marriage, when you know you LOVE somebody, not LUST somebody, like you do interns, Billy-Bob. There. Ask a "righty", that's my answer.
