Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 7/14/5 | Debra J. Saunders

JUST AS the New York Times reported that Bush guru Karl Rove disclosed to a Time magazine reporter that Bush-hater Joseph C. Wilson was married to a CIA operative -- without naming her -- the Times had a real scoop: Valerie Plame "prefers" to be known as Valerie Wilson. Funny, for years, the Times and her husband referred to Mrs. Wilson as Valerie Plame. Now that reports say Rove mentioned that Wilson's wife worked for the CIA, Plame is Valerie Wilson -- a fact that conveniently further damns Rove.

America now knows that Rove told a reporter that former ambassador Wilson, an official in the Clinton administration, was sent to Niger to investigate reports that Iraq had tried to obtain uranium for nuclear weapons -- and on the recommendation of his wife, who worked for the CIA. After Wilson wrote an op-ed for the New York Times about his mission, Rove questioned his credibility.

I understand the front-page treatment in the Times and The Chronicle when it came out that Rove spoke about Plame with Time's Matthew Cooper. President Bush made the mistake of saying he would fire any staffer who leaked "classified" information -- a Clintonesque pledge and hedge. Bush owes the public an explanation. If he doesn't fire Rove, he should explain why.

There is no evidence, however, that Rove broke the law, as he seemed completely unaware that Plame was a covert operative. He wasn't out to punish Plame, but rather to discredit her husband, who discredited the Bushies.

Now Rove critics argue that Rove was wrong to leak anything to the press, not because he might have broken the law, but because those White House denials undermine the Bushies' credibility.

This is funny, because Wilson has been caught in some truth-twisting himself. . . .

and the left is making a Phoney story and trying to get Rove when it is Plame who bent the rules andused her influence to get her Looser Husband a do-nothing Job. then
they Trash Bush when it is Wilson who is the Screwup!!!!

that is the Whole story in a Nutshell. Period.

Some in the MSM are starting to get it. Or they may just be afraid it will all blow up in their face because the White House could be playing rope-a-dope again.

And of course that she wasnt a covert operative, at least not within 5 years, which is also a condition of the law. But why let facts get in the way of a good Republican bashing?

The MSM has no principle beyond lust for power. And that's why so many stories they print support dems. The MSM wants liberals in office to regain the power of their little black books. Who you call, who you quote, and how powerful that person is, and what they "share", makes or breaks a MSM career.

The "bigs" in the MSM only have liberals in their little black books.

CNN is dying because all the folks who share the "good stuff" are out of office and out of power. FOX is doing well because the decision makers -- the movers and shakers -- talk to FOX. The MSM has a dog in this fight. And their unprincipled hunger is showing.

Today's bump comment...

What makes the New York Times think they can trash the reputation of Rove? They should be called on this. Anyone who buys the Times should do it in disguise, out of shame.

This reporter needs to research more before writing an article - - - In the first place, Bush never used the word "fire" in his statement; in the second place, Plame was not a "covert operative" at the time nor had been for 6 to 8 years from reports.

Does Debra Saunders really think that beating this dead horse will make any points at the voting booth?

This Rove "thing" will wind up as another liberal talking point like how Bush stole the 2000 election from Gore, and how there were no WMDs in Iraq. All of which are a blank to anyone other than liberal news junkies. No wonder they keep losing elections.

If a new story reinforces an old story that the public didn't care about before, it lands on page one.

Especially when the story is complicated (making it more suitable for demagoguery), boring, and inconsequential.

The clips I saw of Bush showed he said he would fire anyone who did anything illegal. The media keep saying it differently--he said he would fire anyone who leaked. He did not say that. Goes back to them claiming he said Iraq was an imminent threat--when he plainly and demonstrably (looking at actual clips) said "before Iraq became an imminent threat."

More evidence of either ignorance of the media in hearing and understanding plain English, or (more likely) evidence of media contempt for us having enough brains and discrimination to know the difference.

Women with their fingers in lots of pies often use different names for different situations.

They "prefer" using one name in one situation and "prefer" using another name in another situation.

Hillary has the same habit.
