Yee-haw!
The famous Rods from God. Damned clever idea.
However, I'm not keen about militarizing space. If it becomes a battleground, low Earth orbit will be clogged with the resulting debris. This would make it much more difficult, or even impossible, to go into space.

This can work. Steam pressure must be extremely high. Propulsion by rocket engine. Pressure is high enough to make soil and rock flow as if it were a liquid. About 200,000 psi, maybe.
Not a "physics folks"..
Try this... e=mc2
1,000 Kg x 5,000 mps x 5,000 mps = 25,000 Mega Joules.. 23.7 million BTU...
(That's assuming my calculations are correct.. )
Best guess: approx. 6 to 7 kilotons per rod..
About half the explosive force of the Hiroshima bomb..
Cool. That'd probably do it, huh...
As it is, someone should be either paid and\or given salvage rights by collective space farers to run some type of robotic electromagnetic Bussard that cruises common orbits and either collects or redirects for re-entry the garbage already up there.
BTW - Which would actually give the potential energy contained within the total mass of the object given it's complete conversion to energy.
What left wing rag website is this? Right off the bat it starts with a huge LIE!
First, everyone and his dog KNOWS Iraq HAD WMD because the UN found it, tagged it, destroyed some of it, etc.
I'm getting sick and tired of this lying drivel by those on the left to the point of hiring hitmen to just take them out of their self-induced hysterical misery. The UN, the Clinton administration, the CIA, the Defense Dept., lots of worthless Democratic Senators all knew they had WMD. For goodness sakes, they used in in their war with Iran and on the Kurds! Simple facts. Learn it. Live it. Love it.
The battle for Iraq in this War on Terrorism was based on a gazillion realities all carefully listed in the last UN resolution and the 2002 Congressional resolution a heck of a lot of Democrats voted for. If they can't handle the truth they should just shove their heads back up their butts where it normally resides.
I actually had a neat conversation not long ago with an engineer who ran a tunnel boring machine through 3K feet of mountain while towing a minuteman ICBM to determine the feasability of building an underground complex with missiles and tunnelers which would surface from approximately 3000-5000 feet and launch during or after a protracted total nuclear exchange.
I really don't know..
As I stated, I'm not a rocket scientist, or even a mathematician..
I looked up the calculation on Wikipedia, and "decided" that I could use 1 metric ton for m, and 5,000 meter per second for c... (squared) that's where I got my "e" from..
I am fully open to any other interpretations from anyone with a competent mathematical background..
Thanks!
Oh, (c) is the speed of light, that's the value (approximate) I gave. I converted from 186,000 miles per second.
Our "mass" was moving at 5K meters per sec, so that was the speed /value I used..
I have been keeping an eye on this little "winner" for quite some time. [Everyone has their own private theory about what really happened to the Kursk, also.]
If this technology (supercavitation) can also be reliably applied to ballistic missiles (on our side only, of course), we will have more cards on the table in taking out hardened underground facilities, EX: vs. NK, nice eh?
