China would 'nuke' America if felt 'threatened' over Taiwan (..gloats a hawkish PLA general)

China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” said General Zhu Chenghu.

Gen Zhu was speaking at a function for foreign journalists organised, in part, by the Chinese government. He added that China's definition of its territory included warships and aircraft.

“If the Americans are determined to interfere [then] we will be determined to respond,” said Gen Zhu, who is also a professor at China's National Defence University.

Sure.... They would nuke us, and we would nuke them, and all their allies.

That's the simple response to that.

Missile Defense.

(Seriously I don't see the PLAAF being able to drop a bomb, and their missiles can be stopped right?)

That's like someone with a gun in each of their hands.
One is pointed at their own head, the other pointed at someone else.
Pulling both triggers at once would be the result in this case.

Problem is, do WE want a country after we respond? MAD is only applicable if we believe the other side cares about its citizens. In the case of China, that's debatable.

That said, they would be a parking lot as well. But that doesn't bring back the 10 million we just lost from Southern California, nor would it resolve the economic depression that would result.

This may be the best reason to continue the economic dance with China. If the powers-that-be see us as an indispensible partner for their comfort of living, they may not do anything with Taiwan at all except keep them on their toes in case they suddenly don't need us anymore.

So I guess it's more about an economic MAD than a price in terms of human loss.

I dont think so...

I think that in the end, even a buffoon like Billy Bob or Carter would have had to go to war in Afghanistan after 9/11...

of course if someone else gets in there, i.e. Hillary, it could be different....but I doubt it...Hillary is a populist after all. She gained that trait from her husband. She would do what she thought would be the most popular....

Yeah general and we're prepared to let our ballistic missile submarine force blast your country into a smoking pile of radioactive ashes if you try. We don't talk about! We'll just do it! 3 Ohio class could do the job on China and take N.Korea out as a bonus.

A stupid thing to say, for sure. But, it reveals the attitude. Our friendly, capitalist, cuddly, huggable, low cost Chinese buddies are COMMUNISTS!

But do we really care if our portfolio went up last quarter and we can buy such cheap stuff?

Go back to sleep, the government has it all under control. But, on your next trip to WalMart, look for a Chinese/English dictionary, and maybe a copy of Mao Tse Tung's biography.

Yeah, remember when Clintoon went to China and proclaimed something to the effect "Parents, now your children can sleep calmly knowing that there are no nukes pointed at them tonight" which probably means that the CHICOMS pointed their nukes in another direction for one night, or, more likely, he was doing what he does best - lie.

When I saw this article, I honestly thought it referred to Gen. Clark's comments on Fox last night. He sounded giddy at the thought too. Sounded like he confirmed China's need to defend herself against the US. Why in the world did Fox hire this man?

Yes, and I'm really glad that offshore outsourcing is doing nothing to embolden them. Or make it possible for them to implement the technology they bought.

Communists have demonstrated they are willing to take horrifyingly large losses to accomplish their goals (Russia in WWII, China in Korea, along with the NVA and VC in Vietnam). Hopefully, we will have someone in office that has some backbone and resolve when this all comes down.

In other words, we can't beat the USA.
China is desperate over Taiwan...would a real future superpower get dragged down by that issue? They are humiliated that they can do nothing regarding Taiwan.

Hmmmm, pretzel logic? When it is pointed out that offshore outsourcing will result in a local workforce that is unable to buy products, the typical free market reply is: Someone, somewhere will be working and able to buy.
So, extending that logic, if the manufacturing plants are in China, and the US is crippled, you sell elsewhere. Someone, somewhere will be working and able to buy.
