Shades of Cover - (Plame Game-Detailed Release of Agency MO)
Yahoo/LA Times ^ | 7-16-05 | Greg Miller

Posted on 07/16/2005 7:05:35 PM PDT by STARWISE

SO much in this article .. sorry for all the snips ..

=================================================

(snip)

Valerie Plame had dinner with five of her classmates from the agency's training academy.

(snip)

But even though Plame's "cover" had been cracked wide open, her dinner companions didn't pry for details.(snip)

"Cover is a mosaic, it's a puzzle," said James Marcinkowski, a former CIA case officer who attended the dinner. "Every piece is important [to protect] because you don't know which pieces the bad guys are missing."

(snip)

The case also has called attention to the precious, concealing commodity the intelligence community calls "cover." The term refers to the amalgam of lies and props, from false names to phony front companies, that disguise a spy's identity and purpose.

(snip)

" .. there are distinct categories of cover that CIA operatives use, and an almost endless list of components. Some cover is tissue-thin and disposable. Other arrangements are so layered and deep that they anticipate hostile probing of every facet of a person's life.

Plame's cover — in which she posed as a private energy consultant while actually working for a CIA department tracking weapons proliferation — was somewhere in the middle of those extremes.

(snip)

.... her exposure caused minimal damage, mainly because she had been working at headquarters for years, former officials familiar with the review said.

Still, her clandestine career is over, and the outrage among many current and former case officers lingers because cover is something they go to such great lengths to protect.

"It doesn't matter whether he used her name," Marcinkowski said of the recent disclosures surrounding Rove. "It doesn't matter what her status was. He gave up a piece of the puzzle and he had no right to do it."

I shudder to think the risk to which intelligence agency operatives have been exposed as a result of the extraordinarily sensitive information the reporter revealed here about the agency's methods .. .just to defend Plame and Wilson and whine and lie about Rove.

Urging all to read the rest of this lengthy article .... what's revealed about different methods of cover and the creation thereof is stunning. I can't imagine how Greg Miller can get away with this.

Sounds like he attended this dinner with these former "operatives?" And who arranged that? Will someone get a knock at their door?

The statute involved here is very specific as to what it means by covert status. I'm not John Kerry, so I don't need the nuances.

So, these partisan hacks got caught with their pants down.
And Rove was unfortunate to be in the room when she farted. YYYYyyyaaawwwnnn. Wake me up when the farting's over.

In this article Wilson said that Plame didn't reveal her "job" until well into their courtship....

From other articles he said it was the third date---that is "well into their courtship?"

From reading this, I believe she broke quite a few rules by telling him as easily as she did...

Did you read that book that came out last year before the election, Anonymous by a man names Scheurer (sp)...a CIA agent when he wrote it?

I didn't, but I wonder how explicit he gets in his book about this stuff?

Plame was deactivated right after Aldrich Ames got busted. The CIA believed his spying compromised her. Her cover was blown way before Rove entered the picture.

"It doesn't matter what her status was"

It matters everything what her status was when it concerns legal responsibility but even beside that Rove didn't out her either way.

Give it a rest Covert Drama Queens.

He gave up a piece of the puzzle and he had no right to do it."

Who could have guessed that spending 5 years at a desk job in Washington as an ambassadors wife, while attending political functions was such an obscure, hard to fit piece of our intelligence puzzle.
This gets funnier as each day goes by,still waiting for the forged documents to show up to make it complete.

If Plame's cover was so important, she had to be violating major procedures by arranging for her husband to be working openly in the same WMD proliferation area.

Her cover is as an energy consultant, but it just so happens that her husband is a Diplomat flying about poking into WMD. If the hostiles suspected she might be CIA, the antics of her husband would have provided the piece of the puzzle that would blow her cover clean off.

He's told so many lies, it's hard to keep up with them. I've seen Gary Shroen interviewed, but haven't read the book. All I can say is, I'm glad Porter Goss was sent over to head the CIA.

Yes, I also have an impression that five NOCs had dinner together and invited an LA Times reporter to join them. That is a totally disgusting professional breach.

This publicity hound Plame claims that Rove outed her. What a laugh. I trust she has been taken out of the loop at the CIA, and that these friends are taken out as well.

She was clearly a poor choice for the CIA.

Supposedly the reason (other than logistics, of course) that the CIA and the State Department don't change personnel whenever there is a change in Presidential Administrations is because they are supposed to be "non-partisan" and work for the country, not the Administration in power at the time....

I don't think that is possible anymore, the way that Washington works..but, what option, completely cleaning house whenever there is a change, especially when the party in charge changes?

Part of the reason or Intelligence, especially the humint, is so "bad", is because not enough have been able to infiltrate the world of the Islamofascists, which would take YEARS, so it is totally impractical to start over...

BUT, if you have people in the CIA that are out to "get" the POTUS because of his party or policies, they have a LOT of power to screw up life for all of us!

Plame's cover — in which she posed as a private energy consultant while actually working for a CIA department tracking weapons proliferation — was somewhere in the middle of those extremes.

This is information that came from Wilson himself. This information appears no where in Novak's column, nor does it appear anywhere in any conversation with Rove.

Wilson outed his wife in an effort to get Rove. Except that he really didn't "out" her, since she wasn't really undercover. Just like he outed himself as a CIA agent, when he claimed they sent him to investigate a matter of some controversy, except that they didn't send him, she did, and the matter of controversy wasn't actually controversial. Iraq's trade mission to Niger was public information.

And he lied about what his conclusions were, since he reported to the CIA that it was true, and then wrote in the NY Times that it was false.

She said that the idea that Niger was smuggling uranium was "crazy", but we now know it was true, since Libya exposed its uranium connection. Which makes you wonder just how much did the CIA's WMD expert really know about her supposed area of expertise.

Doing more intensive interviews and psychological screening and term limits .. LOL.

Hiring has been going on for quite awhile now, since Goss got in and rolled up his sleeves and continues:

Hilail Gildin writes: "Andrea Mitchell was asked, on MSNBC, whether it was generally known to news people, before the hullabaloo, that Ms. Planme worked for the CIA. She answered, somewhat reluctantly, that it was. In the light of this, I don't understand the ensuing fuss."
