(Guardian) Angels seek to prevent crime in Tokyo
Science Daily ^ | July 16

TOKYO, July 16 (UPI) -- Many who see the Guardian Angels regularly patrol Tokyo streets express surprise

"Hey, look, it's the Guardian Angels," one teen told her friend as the volunteers in their signature T-shirts and red berets walked by. "I read about them while I was in New York. What are they doing in Japan? There's no problem here."

Keiji Oda, head of the Angels in Tokyo says it's a common misconception that the Guardian Angels are only present in problem areas, reported Japan Today.

"We decided to establish a group here before there were major problems, to try to make sure it stays that way," he said.

The Guardian Angels, founded by Curtis Sliwa in New York City in 1979, has 70 chapters and thousands of members worldwide.

Oda formed the Guardian Angels' Tokyo chapter in 1995 following the Hanshin earthquake and the sarin gas attack.

Police are a reactive force, the official body to redress a crime, according to Oda, but the Angels are a proactive force, hoping their presence on the streets can prevent crime before it occurs.

He just had a baby not too long ago, little Anthony Chester Sliwa. I don't think he lives in his cubicle anymore.

I would disagree. The Japanese police are almost everywhere in their koban mini-stations at many busy intersections and subway stops, and often riding around the very narrow streets of many neighborhoods on bicycles.

Japan * ping * (kono risuto ni hairitai ka detai wo shirasete kudasai : let me know if you want on or off this list):

They are not, however, seen riding subways very often. A red beret, red shirt clad angel would discourage many an obnoxious drunk or chikan wannabe. Mr. Oda has the right idea. If the moderate Muslims applied the same philosophy to the terrorists hiding in their midsts, the problem would largely go away.

Of course, this only holds true if the ratio is 80% moderate to 20% whack-job Muslims as the media wants us to beleive. Perhaps the real ratio is reversed.

Oh, this is good. So they're going to clean the Chinese mafia out of Kabukicho? Because that's where a lot of the real crime comes from. Or are they going to chase the Iranian and Nigerian drug dealers of the street?

" I would disagree. The Japanese police are almost everywhere in their koban mini-stations at many busy intersections and subway stops, and often riding around the very narrow streets of many neighborhoods on bicycles."

Respectfully DT ...Key word here is IN - they spend way too much time IN the kobans rather than OUT . Tons of laws in Japan , but usually nobosy around to enforce them . I could ride from my home here in Minami-Oguni ( hicksville in Kumamoto-ken ) all the way to Kumamoto City - a two hour ride - and never see a police car ! The cops around here take a ride around town 2-3 times a day ; the rest of the time they're in the police station . AFTER something happens though , two dozen or so will inevitably turn up to put on a show for the sheeple .

The mountain road that takes us to Kumamoto from here is nightly taken over by a gang of bozozoku for car racing and wanton destruction of roadsigns , guardrails , etc...You take you life in your hands riding this road after 11 . This has been going on for years . EVERYBODY knows about it ...The police do nothing ; they don't go anywhere NEAR them . Yet every year they show a propaganda show on TV portraying the police as fearless warriors against bozo crime ( you've probably seen it - 200 cops chasing a couple of kids on bikes down the road asking them to stop ...LOL ) ...Pure BS ...The Japanese police are more or less useless ...definitely REactive ...And there is more crime in Tokyo than the sheeple realize . It sure has changed since I got here 20 years ago .

I guess I'm making a comparison to State-side, where all you see (in "fly-over country" here) is the occasional patrol car looking for a minor traffic violation. I considered the presence of the many koban to be far more than what I see back here, even if the cops spend most of their time IN the koban. But certainly there are areas in Japan where cops are too few and far between, as in late-night areas of Kamakura-ken where I used to be. Yeah, those dang bosozoku, I doubt the Guardian Angels could do anything about them anyway, so what's their point?

Doing something about the various zoku would require police with an actual set of kindama running them off the road, dragging them out of the smoking wreckage, and sending them to jail for long sentences.

Ain't gonnna happen.

Hey, I just have to ask, are Matt Drudge and Lynn Samuels still friends? I remember almost thinking they were destined to become an item.
