SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH, Maine - Then post a sign!

What's up in the town of Winthrop, Maine? SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH!

Winthrop proves smoking is not a health issue at all.  But it's all about CON T R O L!

7-16-05 - I was notified of the ridiculous treatment given to one family just because a family member was smoking.

A cop approached the family and told them they would have to leave because this was a "no smoking beach."  The family, as you can see, is not "on" the beach, but on the grassy area.  There were no signs stating that the area was smoke free.  The cop told them that there was a sign, but it was now "gone."

Who pays for the care of Winthrop Beach?  The taxpayers?  People in Maine who smoke are paying well above their fair share of taxes.  Tax payers are also paying for this "cop," who evidently had nothing better to do then harass a family because one of the adults  was smoking.

Rule #11:  Trash, debris or cigarette butts must be placed in trash containers.

The only signs that were posted.  If Winthrop wants a smoke free beach, they need to get their act together and POST said signs!  NOW!

You have a point. I've also heard the point made saying "ignorance of the law is no excuse."
So the day after the Winthrop Beach, Maine town council passes an edict stating that you may only exhale on even seconds but does not post a sign you're OK with your arrest for violating their ordinance?
Witches were treated better than smokers. At least the English didn't tax them. :-(

Speaking the truth brings these vitriolic replies. Junkies react predictably when their habit is challenged!

Just wondering - why did you cut off the top of the sign in your photo???? Was there something there you didn't want us to see?

I've found needles.

In parks and beaches.

Enough to request them added to your list.

>>>The owner then invested in a very expensive liquor license and business started to boom again.

Is this the back ended point then? Ban the smokes to force a liquor license to stay in business?

Banning the use of laws to discourage an unhealthy habit is likewise an encroachment of freedoms.

I agree. And I can't WAIT until they take on the crap that's served at McDonald's. I mean, I can't even stand the people that go to that trailer-trash "restaurant".

Right on, CJ, you're my kind of guy! No slack for slackers, I say!

Not at all. If people are going to be irresponsible then members of society have a right to discourage them.

Damn right. And don't even get me started on gay sex habits!

At least smokers usually drop dead from strokes and heart attacks - or maybe a case of lung cancer that lasts for a year or two.

But why should I pay fro A DECADE or two of expensive AIDS treatment for some Hershy-highway happy cowboy when they could have kept their unit in their pants - or at LEAST put a rubber on it.

There ought to be a law!

Were you ever burnt by one of those cigarette butts while walking on any of the beaches you name?

Nope. They were rather old.

And guess what? I bet YOU have habits that I would find disgusting. Get it?

Non-smokers tend to flatulate and whine more than smokers.

Did you know pipe-smokers live longer than non-smokers?

Well, I'm not saying it's impossible, but I never heard of your experience from anyone else in all my life, either.

Well, it has happened to me too.

I oppose the "right" of a smoker to burn me.

And I oppose the "right" of boozers to slice me open.........last time I needed a tetnus shot was because I stepped on a broken booze bottle at the beach.

Look at the pix again--rule # 5 prohibits glass containers. This is a common rule at all beaches I have been to.

Why should smokers get a pass on following the rules?

You don't like the rules, vote to change them.

The glass container rule is at any and all beaches I've ever been at including th one where I sliced open my foot - but the boozers apparently get a pass on the rule.

Apparently from what is posted here there was no sign about no-smoking..if there is no sign, who is asking for a pass?

Just wanted to let you know that the top of the sign was Winthrop Beach. I am the one this happened to! The only thing that is "hidden" here is the fact they changed an original ORDINANCE dated June 12th 1989 and did not follow the rules of procedure to change an ordinance. The rules for change are clearly stated in the "Grant Of The Powers Of The Town" under the Constitution and laws of the State of Maine!!!

p.s. This is my first time posting and notice the user name? :)

Thanks for posting!  Nice to meet you!  Do you want on my Puff List? :)

I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, but cigarette extinguish themselves in sand. That's right!  It's not like they are laying on a carpet and catching fire, right?  That is why most out door receptacle's contain sand to butt out a cigarette.

Walla!!!!!

You will have to ask the family that "took" the pictures.  They sent them to me in email.  I didn't crop anything out of the photos.
