Hoover's Institution [and Bill Moyers revelation]
Wall Street Journal ^ | 20 Jul 2005 | Lawrence H. Silberman

Posted on 07/20/2005 6:32:32 AM PDT by docbnj

Only a few weeks before the 1964 election, a powerful presidential assistant, Walter Jenkins, was arrested in a men's room in Washington. Evidently, the president was concerned that Barry Goldwater would use that against him in the election. Another assistant, Bill Moyers, was tasked to direct Hoover to do an investigation of Goldwater's staff to find similar evidence of homosexual activity. Mr. Moyers' memo to the FBI was in one of the files.

When the press reported this, I received a call in my office from Mr. Moyers. Several of my assistants were with me. He was outraged; he claimed that this was another example of the Bureau salting its files with phony CIA memos. I was taken aback. I offered to conduct an investigation, which if his contention was correct, would lead me to publicly exonerate him. There was a pause on the line and then he said, "I was very young. How will I explain this to my children?" And then he rang off. I thought to myself that a number of the Watergate figures, some of whom the department was prosecuting, were very young, too.

In other words, the sanctimonous Bill Moyers of NPR had tried to use the FBI to dig up dirt on the Goldwater campaign in 1964.

The sanctimonious Bill Moyers was LBJ's liason to Hoover for all "black bag jobs" and illegal political investigations.
He was/is one of the most corrupt operatives to ever enter the whitehouse.
He made Nixon's "plumbers" look like choir boys.

Democrat "abuse of power" and "politics of personal destruction" and "dirty tricks" bump.

LBJ was such a dangerous sleaze. I guess if the nation could survive his presidency we can take just about anything.

I loved the line from Barry Goldwater's autobio. where he says every time I see Moyers I feel like throwing up.

I remember that at the time the running gag was at DC restaurants they were serving a "Walter Jenkins Special" - a foot long hot dog with mayonnaise

Just imagine if Goldwater had won the presidency in '64. What would Vietnam have been like?

An alternative history would have been the North Vietnamese going home. The US remaining a super power. And the USSR crumbling sooner from US pressure that went flat between LBJ and Carter.

At least 2 million would have lived in So. East Asia. And maybe a little visibility in China would have dampened Mao's "culteral revolution" and a few million more would have lived.

I'm sure the sanctimonious Moyer thinks he did good work for LBJ. Screw him.

Whenever I think Clinton is biggest sleazebag ever elected President, I remember LBJ and realize I'm wrong.

As George Will remarked: Bill Clinton isn't the worst President we've ever had but he may be the worst person to ever become President.

I was told in 1964 that if I voted for Goldwater the war in Vietnam would be escalated. So I voted for Goldwater. And sure enough the war in Vietnam was escalated.

Requires subscription to read the whole thing. I'm curious about where Silberman was going with this old news so that it is of current interest for todays WSJ.

Can anyone post the remaining bit of this article without violating the fair use doctrine or getting FR in trouble? Seems like separate small bits posted by different Freepers would avoid the problem.

LBJ's idea of "escalation" I'm sure would not have been Goldwaters version.

The war was stagnant until the Christmas 72 bombing in the north. We removed the restriction on B-52s on Hanoi for 12 days, and the north basically sued for peace. The operations plan for that campaign had been drawn up in 1965.

We never needed to send GI's into the jungles of the South Vietnam. We only needed to ring up uncle ho on the phone and tell him to get the hell out of South Vietnam or the bombers will be there next week. Then do it.

It worked in '72. It would have worked in '65. And in '75 as well, and we could have saved millions of lives had we done it again.

Moyers was trying to smear, castigate, discredit and force from employment people of different sexual orientation?

I'm sure that this will be on CBS tonight.

Just heard it. You'll not hear much from the MSM on this. But it's sure to take some shine off Moyers...
