Wife of Nominee Holds Strong Antiabortion Views(Outrageous!</sarcasm>)
LOS ANGELES TIMES ^ | July 21, 2005 | Richard A. Serrano

WASHINGTON — While Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.'s views on abortion triggered intense debate on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, there is no mistaking where his wife stands: Jane Sullivan Roberts, a lawyer, is ardently against abortion.

A Roman Catholic like her husband, Jane Roberts has been deeply involved in the antiabortion movement. She provides her name, money and professional advice to a small Washington organization — Feminists for Life of America — that offers counseling and educational programs. The group has filed legal briefs before the high court challenging the constitutionality of abortion.

A spouse's views normally are not considered relevant in weighing someone's job suitability. But abortion is likely to figure prominently in the Senate debate over John Roberts' nomination. And with his position on the issue unclear, abortion rights supporters expressed concern Wednesday that his wife's views might suggest he also embraced efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

"It's unclear how all this will affect her husband," said Jennifer Palmieri, a spokeswoman with the Center for American Progress, a liberal public policy group. "It's possible that he would have a different view than her. It's just that in the absence of information about this guy, people are looking at her and trying to read the tea leaves."

NFP works quite well, and for certain couples is completly licit.

The only way the left will support Roberts is if he shows up for his hearing with bloody scrubs on while holding a scalpel and vacuum.

Aren't John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, etc. practicing Catholics? Oh, I forgot, they're "moderate" Catholics, not "fundamentalist extremist" Catholics. </sarc>

No. The legality of the case before him will be his guide, not his wife. His wife isn't going to be on the bench with him.

What the America-hating left REALLY fears the most is a Justice who will strictly Support and interpret the Constitution.....but they cannot state it, so are stuck with a number of other lesser and emotional issues that please their constituencies.....the same is sadly true for many repub Senators re sovereignty/borders/trade, etc.

Hey, Dubya, bring her onto the court too if Rehnquist quits. The first husband and wife team on the SCOTUS.

The two kids were adopted.

Either way, I have a couple close friends. The doctors told them they couldn't have any children. By whatever miracle they had two. Then the well went dry. Despite their desire to have more and various desperate attempts, they have not been able to have more. My wife and I have five so far, but we try hard not to judge those who have 1 or 2, we generally don't know why.

Nor, am I in much of a spot to judge, myself.

Well, he does have to live with her. And as a devout Catholic, for the rest of their common life.

"Yet they only have two kids?!"

do you have a point or just a question? LOL

lots of Catholic families have two (we prefer) childdren, some only have one and some have none...

In case you didn't know, the number of God's gifts to a married couple is not questioned. If God wants a married couple to have children is His decision.

no, actually I think they are being perfectly honest. They fear an end to elective abortion, thus making sexual liberationism more difficult, thus potentially minimizing their physical pleasure and that of their constituents.
