New National Geographic/Zelitsky Expedition to Cuba "Underwater City" Site Planned-- Page 27

The Russian-Canadian oceanographer Paulina Zelitsky reveals that likely, next autumn, between October and November, she will lead a new expedition, from the Port of Progress, to finish the work that could not be concluded last year at the suspected site of a lost underwater city near Cuba; to map the area and to make a hi-resolution film of the location.

National Geographic will finance most of the trip. For several months the team has been readying a specially equipped ship in Canada for the expedition.

The inclusion of at least 100 people in the mission is anticipated, with a plan to transport and to deploy a minisubmarine and several robots to lower to depths of up to half a mile.

In October of 2004, Paulina Zelitsky and her well-equipped team made an expedition to the area where the underwater discovery was made, also leaving from the Port of Progress, to prove the island collapse theory, but they could not complete the mission due to technical deficiencies of the submarine that rendered it unable to take images from the marine bottom.

At that time, the apparatus was only able to make superficial dives, although the scientists managed to film a pyramid of almost 35 meters height (approx 115 feet) and to extract stones embedded with animal fossils incapable of living at a depth of 700 meters.(2,300 feet).

This year’s expedition does not look to prove the hypothesis of a sunken island.

"We think that this is no longer a hypothesis, it is a fact, supported by scientists who specialize in geology and archaeology", says the investigator. "The existence of pyramidal structures deep underneath Cuban waters is verified. We only needed to gather the details ".

Cataclysmic Earthquake

Paulina Zelitsky has been steadfast in her theory of the collapse of the city as a result of a powerful earthquake more than 12,000 years ago .

"All the team’s scientists are in agreement with the understanding that the geologic formation of the Yucatan Peninsula is as a result of seismic activity.

In fact, the Peninsula and the zone of the collapse are located near a zone of high seismicity ", she says. -

This discovery demonstrates that the first north americans arrived earlier than previously thought and that all did not arrive on the continent by means of the Bering Straits. Many others arrived from Asia by means of the Pacific Ocean.

There is even a new theory according to which surmises that the Mayans of Yucatan come from Central America. – put forth last week - the investigator remembers -,

British archaeologists said that they found human tracks in Puebla that date from 40 thousand years ago, which contradicts the general idea that America was populated not more 13,500 years ago.

Pyramids and building were captured by Paulina Zelitsky’s equipment in 2000, showing that between Cuba and Yucatan lies a city submerged to more than 600 meters of depth with structures very geometrically cut, passages, tunnels and even temples with diverse symbols that arose in a place where officially human beings never lived.

According to the investigators, these structures seem to be remains of streets, pyramids and buildings. Most of these blocks have gigantic dimensions, reaching to five meters of height and several tons of weight.

It has been confirmed that the stones were cut, carved and polished to make them fit them with others and thus form greater structures.

These constructions, the scientists agree, are megalythic, are aligned in symmetrical form, are very well organized and, as if they were ordered and city-planned set on a “beach” of very fine, volcanic crystal sediment, like sand. –

Next Stop: Atlantis, Cuba--- Page 23

Long-ago Greek philosopher Plato may have unwittingly unleashed a modern day political Battle Royale on an unsuspecting world with his haunting tales of the lost city, Atlantis.

Untold legions took to heart the philosopher’s lament that `earthquakes and floods ‘in `one terrible day and night’ destroyed his Atlantic island empire.

Drama in writing style was not lost on this student of Socrates, who recorded his thoughts post-8570 BC in the TIMAEUS and circa 9421 BC in the CRITIAS.

Now a `lost city’, that could be the fabled city of Atlantis, has been discovered by a Canadian scientific research team, off the western coast of Cuba.

Paulina Zelitsky again. Click and drag photo to resize.

Why is it that latter day, long-lost sunken treasures always seem to come with a Canadian connection?

At about the same time as Soviet-born ocean engineer Paulina Zelitsky, the president of the Canadian-based company Advanced Digital Communications (ADC), had detected what could be Atlantis in deep waters off Cuba, an unnamed "respected Canadian architect" discovered a sunken boat with which he claimed the Chinese really discovered Canada and the western hemisphere.

The boat-finding architect is headed for the United Nations to have the site officially declared as a World Heritage site.

Davey Jones’ Locker is giving up many recent discoveries around the world.

On May 28 2002, National Geographic News reported on the recent discovery of megalithic ruins some 2,200 ft. below sea level off the coast of Cuba. Interviewed for the story was geologist, Manuel Iturralde, Director of Research at Cuba’s Natural History Museum and consulting geologist for Canadian exploration company ADC, based in Havana, Cuba.

According to a 2001 Special Report by Gateway to Atlantis author Andrew Collins, "The discoveries were made last summer during deep-sea surveys made by Paulina and a trained scientific research team aboard the Cuban research vessel, Ulysses.

"Sonar images revealed `an extensive series of structures’ over a several-mile area in darker and lighter shades. The site is close to the edge of the underwater geological feature known as the Cuban shelf, which falls off sharply in a series of shelves which drop down to several thousand metres, and it is on one of these shelves, in around 600-700 metres of water, that the structures are to be found."

"`Whenever you find a volcano, there is often a settlement associated with it,’ Paul Weinzweig, Paulina’s husband and a director of ADC, observed. `I don’t know the exact relationship, but it is in the same vicinity as the volcano, the fault line and the river. They’re quite close to one another.’

"On the matter of whether the sonar imagery really does show `pyramids, roads and buildings`, Paul stated: `We had been looking at the images for some months, and keep a picture on the wall showing pyramids in the Yucatan, and let’s just say they kept reminding us of these structures. They really do look like an urban development.’"

Finding sunken cities, much less the fabled Atlantis, was not the main mission of ADC in Fidel Castro’s Cuba. Their original scientific operation was to survey the deep waters off the Cuban coastline as part of a joint venture set up between the Canadian company and the Cuban government, in particular its state partner Geomar.

One of their chief aims is to pinpoint the location of the billions of dollars of bullion and lost treasure from sunken ships dating back to the Conquest.

"Cuba has the richest galleon cemetery in the world," says Weinzweig.

Cuba treasure seekers include Visa Gold, a Toronto-based, low-tech company operating out of Havana’s Marina Hemingway, which claims to have retrieved some 7,000 items from sunken vessels. In the cache from a brigantine called Palemon, lost off Cuba’s northern coast in 1839, the booty included jewellery, diamonds and pistols.

ADC’s husband and wife team are not the first to have laid claim to the discovery of sunken cities off the coast of Cuba.

There are unconfirmed reports that Soviet submarines discovered an underwater "building complex" during the 1960s.

Leicester Hemingway, brother of writer Ernest Hemingway claimed to have spotted, during a flight into the country, beyond its northern coast, "an expanse of stone ruins, several acres in area and apparently white, as if they were marble."

The exact location of this underwater marble city remains unclear. The Soviet submarine underwater "building complex" remains unconfirmed and there are no actual pictures of undersea objects in the ADC find.

But the ADC claim, if ever proven, like the Canadian architect’s claim of having found the Chinese boat that proves that the Chinese reached North America first, would change the course of world history.

"If Paulina Zelitsky and her oceanographic colleagues are right in their belief that `pyramids, roads and buildings’, do lie off Cuba’s western coastline, then it is clear that the prehistory of the Caribbean, and its influence on the rise of Mesoamerican civilization, will have to be revised dramatically," says Collins.

"Moreover, it could well be that at long last the mystery of Atlantis, mankind’s greatest historical enigma, is about to unfold in a most spectacular fashion."

Perhaps it would do us well to remember that while Cuba may be eons away from the democratic world in the political realm, in geographic terms, it’s only 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

Scientists Interrupt Search for the “Mayan Atlantis" in the Caribbean.

Cuban Newpaper: GRANMA
Mexico City, November 6, 2004

This story updates this prior story

. - A group of scientists searching for a hypothetical “Mayan Atlantis" found a pyramid of 35 meters under the waters of the Caribbean, but it had to interrupt the mission due to technical problems, as reported by the Mexican newspaper Millenium, today.

After 25 days of work in the sea, near the southwestern end of Cuba, the investigations deeper than 500 meters had to be abandoned due to problems with the mini submarine Deep Worker informs agency DPA.

According to the Russian scientist Paulina Zelitsky, who heads the mission, in April or May a new attempt will be made because there were findings there that would allow one to suppose that in that zone a pre-Hispanic establishment existed that was submerged by some cataclysm in the past.

So far, as previously indicated, it was possible to confirm the existence of a pyramid of 35 meters of height and rocky "unnatural formations", In Addition, the team managed to extract a carved rock, possibly part of another pyramid.

The mission weighed anchor on October 7th of this year from the Mexican port of Progress, in the Eastern Yucatan Peninsula, with an international team of scientists.

According to preliminary reports by Zelitsky, who noted that she will extend her remarks and conclusions in more detail in an exclusive article for National Geographic.

During the expedition’s 25 days there were additional findings. Among them were stone extraction with animal fossils, volcanic sand remainders and a bacterium that can be used in vaccines and that are similar in their properties to microorganisms found previously only at more than 3,000 meters of depth.

The mission failed due to technical problems with the submarine and faults in the illumination system, that was "six teams weaker than expected", the scientist said.

"Because the apparatus could not move, it took photographs from pyramids from a distance of one to three meters, without being able to take photos from a distance from those structures so that one could have the perspective of the buildings", she explained.

"We were only able to make superficial dives . We did not remove what we waited for by lack of properly adapted equipment", she said, thus in the next attempt we will use a robotic unmanned submarine.

12,000 years ago, a powerful volcanic eruption sank an island between Yucatan and Cuba, where a "prehistoric" civilization bloomed prior to the Mayan Civilization, according to a scientific theory investigators from several countries will try to demonstrate during an underwater expedition this month.

Deep Worker, the submersible that will be used to take video of the "submerged ruins" off Cuba. Click and drag photo to resize.

Before beginning their project, the archaeologists had to raise $2-million (about R13-million). They set sail from the port of Progreso in eastern Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula.

The scientists will be headed by Canadian engineer Paulina Zelitsky, who discovered vestiges of this island in the year 2000, approximately nine kilometers off the coast of Cabo San Antonio, in Cuba, in international waters and about 18 hours from the Yucatan peninsula by boat.

This Newspaper published a report of that finding the 11th of November of last year. According to that story, investigator Paulina Zelitsky, using her sonar equipment found the remains of a city under the sea, with great buildings, avenues and wharves made of granite.

Like Dzibichaltún

The lack of sufficient, conclusive evidence and the lack of visibility at that great depth did not allow the scientists at that time to form a workable theory on the collapse of a city.

Paulina Zelitsky with Diving Equipment

Four years later, that same team of scientists prepares a new expedition to the zone of the discovery, from Port Progress, in Yacatan, Mexico, to prove a theory of the collapse, that could revolutionize modern archaeology.

Speculation is that the new findings in the sea belong to a city very similar to Dzibichaltún, in Yucatan. Paulina Zelitzky, was interviewed by this newspaper in the dining room of the expeditionary ship, shortly before weighing anchor from Port Progress.

The investigator and her team of collaborators were in Progress from Friday, October 1 to last Thursday October 7 to provision the ship, the Akademik Golitsyn and to assemble the international team of scientific researchers. Thereafter, she will direct them to the zone of the discovery.

Volcanos

The collapse of that island happened by the eruption of a volcano. According to the scientist’s theory, 15,000 years ago the Yucatan peninsula and Cuba were united by a land bridge in the form of a mountain range. Paulina Zelitsky and her collaborators discovered that this same mountain range still exists now, but under the sea.

No one pays particular attention or focuses on the importance of under ocean volcanos, even though the Canadian scientist believes in response to our query that they could potentially be even more dangerous than surface volcanos.

The investigation intends to demonstrate that in the past the volcanic activity between Yucatan and Cuba was catastrophic and that in the future such a major event could be repeated.

The studies will also verify the antiquity of Mayan Culture and its presumed origins here and that of other cultures, like the Olmec, as well as provide evidence forcontact between inhabitants of that long sunken island, Cuba and South America.

Atlantis

First in arriving at the coast of the Gulf of Mexico were the Olmecs, who soon founded Sale, in Tabasco. According to the oral tradition of that culture, their predecessors identified their origin in an island that disappeared, called” A tlan you cu ' ".

The tracks of this island were discovered by pure chance, as it may be revealed in the next few weeks, when engineer Zelitsky’s second expedition concludes.

Fortuitous Finding

In 2000 she and a Canadian crew headed an expedition to look for petroleum in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. When they tracked the marine bottom the scientists found an unusual, intriguing image: great constructions of stone, perfectly aligned under the water, on an extension of several thousands of square meters.

These constructions seemed polished, formed by not by limestone as might be expected. The images showed, very great stones, aligned in symmetrical form, very well organized assembly, as if they were the result of city-planning and sitting on a volcanic crystal sediment, very fine, like sand.

The scientists saw, to a side of those constructions, something similar to streets, avenues, bays and structures similar to wharves of some port. They understood that the material of the constructions and the volcanic crystal of the floor could not be formed at this great depth (2,200 feet) under the sea but rather, on the surface, in contact with oxygen.

Something Strange

Paulina Zelitzky remembers now that at first we thought when seeing those images were that we had run into with something strange and highly unusual, but we did not know what it was.

The Akademik Golitsyn. Click and drag photo to resize.

But as the curiosity kills the cat, initially I never thought about finding or looking for another explanation. Six months later, while we reviewed our photographs of the bottom of the sea in my offices, I raised my eyes and happened to see a calendar with photographs of some Mayan ruins. Suddenly, it all fell into place: some of the photos were identical to those we had discovered deep under the sea and, therefore, probably were vestiges of a prehistoric structure.

Cataclysm

I at heart see a great similarity between our findings under the sea and the structure and characteristics of some monuments of the archaeological zone of Dzibichaltún, asserted the scientist.

Our geologist, doctor Manuel Iturralde, an internationally recognized authority in this field, suggested that the recently discovered structures could belong to an island located between Cuba and Yucatan, which was sunk 10,000 or 12,000 years because of a seismic cataclysm.

An indication that this cataclysm did occur and collapsed the entire surface are the stones we extracted from the ocean which showed concentrations of fossilized animals, specifically of escaramujos, a crustacean that lives solely to two meters of depth. How do we explain its presence at 900 meters of depth?

I don’t want to appear to be a fortune teller said the investigator, but I believe there will prove to be sufficient scientific evidence to confirm our theory that there, near Cuba, is a sunken island, containing the remains of a prehistoric civilization?

Actually, since this occurred many thousands of years ago, it was undoubtedly one of Ted's ancestors who sunk the continent and drowned everyone therein. This lends further proof that Ted is a serious under-achiever, hated even by his own father, as should be the case.

Problem is though that the sea level was only 300-400 feet lower during the ice age.

This article is talking about structures more than 2000 feet down!

Some say as much as 500ft.

Regardless, block off the Carribean and it'll dry up. The unsuspecting builders built it on the shoreline of the very much lowered Gulf Of Mexico coast. Incidentally, I also believe the same thing happened in the Mediterranean...may have been sectioned into 2-3 parts.
