(Branford-WTNH, July 21, 2005 6:55 PM) _ Oysters may give you pearls, but some clams in Branford deliver diamonds. A man who lost his wedding ring two years ago while digging for clams got a gift from the sea this week.
Nearly forty years of marriage and Stewart and Mary Petri still hold hands.
"When we go for a walk sometimes sure we do."
For two years he's been without the wedding band she gave to him in 1967. He lost it digging for clams.
"I was very depressed when I came back and ever more depressed to tell my wife Mary that I'd lost the wedding ring," says Stewart.
"It bothered him he didn't have it and so that bothered me," says Mary. "She didn't berate me for which I thought she might, but she did not," Stewart added.
Mary did forgive, but couldn't forget the ring given to symbolize their love so she bought a replacement ring.
"It's not the same," she says. "It doesn't even have the initials in there."
Stewart went back out to that same clamming spot this week and got a gift from the sea. "All of a sudden I come up with my clam rake with a little gold ring on top of it which I didn't recognize."
The couple cleaned the clams and the ring and says Mary, "I saw the initials and I just couldn't belive it."
"To come up with a ring lost two years ago -- the odds are just stupendous," says Stewart.
What makes this an unbelievable story is that Stewart says he only clams once or twice a year.
"God fixing my stupidity for losing it in the first place."
Now when Stewart and Mary hold hands their wedding bands match. They know the love in their hearts was never lost.
Stewart says, "there's a line in Titanic our love will go on." "It just shows we were meant to have the rest of our lives together," says Mary.
It's not clear what they'll do with that replacement ring.
Awwww...I feel like I am going to cry.
Sike!
Reporting goosebumps. Good for them.
Cool story. Thanks for posting it.
Wow! There was another story not long ago about a guy who found a ring a man and woman had lost decades ago in the woods.
But, this clam story is just incredible.
Man what a great story! Maybe Hollywood will make a movie out of it? Nahhhh, not enough blood, guts and vulgarity for them.
No, no, no. It was never in the ocean. She had it all the time and threw it INTO the ocean at the end of the movie.
Oh wait, I'm thinking of something else...
Hi JJ!
Thanks for the PING!
What a cool story!
That was the dumbest scene in the whole silly movie. Don't we all throw expensive jewels into the ocean 50-60 years after a tragic event for symbolic reasons? It made me hope some salvage operation would find it and take it home since the old lady didn't have any further use for it, and was too silly to leave it to her heirs.
I know, you don't have to say it, I need a life.
:)
There's something fishy about this............oh well, I'll just clam up about it............
LOL! That cartoon goes WAY back...
Don't be shellfish....tell me.
Let me make sure I understand this...he lost it in 1967 while looking for Scientologists?
I'd just be crabby.........
That's a cool story!
Wow! Cool story!
Hometown news, eh?
