'Bombers, racists, the law: they're all out to get Muslims' Fear of faith-hate reprisals runs high

, Dana Gornitzki, Lorna Martin, Tariq Panja, David Smith and Ned Temko Sunday July 24, 2005

Observer

Jimmy, a Muslim, pulled over his car a few hundred yards from the former home of suicide bomber Shehzad Tanweer on Colwyn Road in Beeston, Leeds. He took out a DVD which explored a conspiracy theory about 9/11. 'It is the same with this,' he said. 'The moment a mother rang up about her son from West Yorkshire, they knew they had their fall-men.' Among Beeston's younger Muslims, it was an increasingly common view last week. On the street corners, inside the shops and in the local park, there were mutterings of conspiracy theories as rumours washed over the town. One was that Hasib Hussain - the 18-year-old bus bomber - had been seen alive, another that one bomber's family said he could not have been carrying identification as it was all at home.

Ever since it had become clear that three of the men responsible for the 7 July atrocities were from the same tiny area, Beeston became a hub of activity as police and media descended. Over the past two weeks the mood has shifted from shock to disbelief.

Last week things appeared to have calmed down, with the police lines gone and the cameras out of sight. In the park people walked dogs or played tennis. Near the courts, a group of men - whom Hussain and Tanweer had once hung out with every day - gathered as usual.

After news of the further bombing attempts in London reached them last Thursday, they relaxed more and one said: 'That should take the attention off Beeston.' Any possibility that the new suspects could also be locals was not discussed.

By Friday, as news of more extraordinary developments in the capital filtered through, the mood shifted again. 'London will be like Beirut, Belfast and Palestine now,' said one man. 'It will be a part of life because Bush and Blair can't keep their noses out of other people's business.'

'Bush is the real terrorist,' muttered another.

A 30-year-old man who went to school with Mohammad Sidique Khan - the oldest of the London bombers - said many young Asians in the area suffered from a 'persecution complex'. He said: 'A lot of people had no idea who Osama bin Laden was before 9/11. Then they got this information and believed that Muslims were being persecuted.'

He added: 'Many don't want to get addicted to drink, so they look for another outlet - for them religion is always there.'

Blaming Bush and Blair to justify terrorism is not the majority view among Muslims across the country - but it is the passionate belief of a significant minority. Almost one in four British Muslims sympathise with the motives of suicide bombers, according to a YouGov poll published in yesterday's Daily Telegraph. More than half say that, whether they sympathise or not, they understand why some people behave in the way they do.

The research also showed that nearly one in three thinks that Western society is decadent and immoral and should be brought to an end. Sixteen per cent of British Muslims told the survey that they do not feel loyal towards Britain and 6 per cent went as far as saying the London bombings were justified.

Findings like this produce complex reactions in young British Muslims like Fatema Dossa, 24, a pharmacy graduate from Eastcote, London. 'There is no doubt that the double standards of Western foreign policy have an effect on Muslim youth. You can understand the motives of suicide bombers, but to kill people is different. It is not going to achieve anything.

'If you go to university and see the youth - not just white British but Pakistani and Muslim youth - drinking and drug-taking, you do feel, where is society going? I'm sure the older white British generation would agree society is decadent. But I wouldn't go as far as to say "immoral".'

Fears of an anti-Muslim backlash have been realised in a 500-per-cent rise in faith-hate crimes in the past two weeks. More than 1,000 race and faith hate incidents have been reported to police across the country since the London bombings, though community leaders believe the actual number of incidents is at least four times higher.

Most of the reported crimes are 'low-level' attacks such as graffiti and verbal abuse. However, race monitoring groups across the UK have seen a significant increase in the number of reports of arson attacks on mosques and Muslim women being spat at in the street or not being allowed on buses because they were wearing headscarves.

Police are investigating several serious assaults and one murder related to the backlash. Although most incidents have taken place in and around London, police or community groups across the country have reported a rise in Islamophobic-motivated attacks.

On Friday, police arrested three people after an alleged arson attack at the Buckinghamshire home of suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay. They have also received more than 200 reports of faith-hate incidents, up from 30 for the same period last year.

A race body in Wales yesterday said the rate of abuse had increased from 10 incidents in a month to more than 30 in the two weeks following the 7 July attacks. In Glasgow, a woman sharing the same surname as one of the bombers said her children had been spat on.

According to the Muslim Safety Forum (MSF), there was a sharp rise in Islamophobic crimes the day after the first London bombings. The rate decreased a few days later then increased again after the suspects were revealed to be British-born Muslims.

Since CCTV images were released of the suspects of Thursday's failed attacks, there has been a further rise in apparent reprisal attacks.

Tahir Butt of the MSF said there were serious concerns about the backlash and, while he praised police for their efforts to protect Muslims, he raised questions about how prepared they were for the level of reprisal attacks.

'There are bigots out there who are reading some media reports and deciding to take the law into their own hands,' he said. 'The message from everyone is zero tolerance, but we need action. We need to hear about people being arrested for these attacks on Muslims who are threefold victims. They are targets of terrorists, targets of the Islamophobic backlash and they will be targets of anti-terror legislation.'

Amar Singh, editor of the Eastern Eye newspaper, said Muslim communities were on tenterhooks. 'There is genuine fear. At worst it is assault and abuse, at best it is strange looks or people moving away from you on the train. After 11 September we looked at Americans and thought they were so ignorant ... They didn't know the difference between a Muslim and a Sikh. I can't believe parts of Britain are just as bad. Just as xenophobic.'

Police had hoped an intense backlash could be avoided by responding quickly to hate crimes. A spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers said apart from four arsons, or attempted arsons, and one murder, most incidents involved abuse in the street, minor criminal damage, graffiti, offensive literature, phone and internet threats and abuse, hoaxes and some assaults.

The Met has passed the effort to counter hate crime to its most senior Muslim officer, assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, who told The Observer he would be convening a special meeting of local community figures at Scotland Yard tomorrow.

While positive discrimination is illegal, Ghaffur told an inter-faith meeting in Southall on Friday that he was determined to look for 'imaginative' ways to recruit more Asians and Muslims to the police. One of his ideas was the possibility of London business leaders funding a recruitment drive for Muslim officers.

The tension was evident in east London yesterday on Brick Lane, where the stalls and restaurants are usually bustling on a Saturday. Oly Ahmed, 22, a staff member at Chillies restaurant, said: 'It's not normal, very quiet. Friday night was quite busy but the rest of the week was not even 10 per cent of normal business. It's incredible for Brick Lane. Our business depends on tourists and City workers. They are not coming this way because of problems with travelling. Lots of people are talking about it and everyone is scared of what will happen.'

Aklis Ali, 39, who works at the Best 1 convenience store, said: 'There have been a lot of police on the streets since 7 July. There is tension when my family goes out. When my wife wears a hijab people think she's a terrorist. We don't feel safe - you never know if someone is going to attack you for being Muslim. My wife went to the hospital last week and someone swore at her.'

He added: 'Just because of a few fanatics, you can't blame all Muslims. We all have the same feeling about 7 July. We're human beings.'

Aww. So why don't the "moderate Muslims" turn the lunatics in to the police?

Liberal journalists never tell us. But they're all about the "feelings" of a supposedly oppressed minority group.

Then speak out against the islamofacist pigs instead of griping at me for looking cross-eyed at you. I will keep a closer eye on these scarf heads until they start speaking against this chicken sh====t behavior.

We will emigrate to your country, suck all the free welfare benefits, enjoy your freedoms, come to depend on honest government where things actually work, and then change it all to our way of thinking when we have critical mass...

Kinda reminds me of liberals who move to red states to escape high crime, high taxes and poor schools and then do all they can to change these areas into the liberal hells they just left...

As compared with a 10,000,000% rise in faith-hate bombings.

Look. I agree that the moderate muslims are getting pressured a bit (perhaps even a bot too much). However, it's about damn time they felt a little pressure. They are the ones that hear the whispers, who know the people who know the people who know the islamofascist...right? They are therefore in a lot better position to change the communities then we are. So, I think a little pressure (and anxiety) is just the kick in the pants the moderate muslims need. Furthermore, they should quit whining about it. We're not only asking for their patience and understanding (and help). We're demanding it.

Hmmm, the author seems to have a Hindu-sounding name. It is because of people like her that the Muslims in India are attempting to sit on everyone else's head.

Muslim grievences, my @ss! They are not fighting for any grievences, they are killing innocent "infidels" as a shortcut to their distorted "paradise". Plain and simple.

The Chasm between Rhetoric and Reality
G. Parthasarathy

Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar was in New Delhi for the "Composite Dialogue Process" between India and Pakistan during the weekend commencing June 26. The last round of talks between the Foreign Secretaries, in 1998, had been anything but cordial. When India's then Foreign Secretary K. Raghunath referred to the growing terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by the Pakistani jihadi group the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), his Pakistani counterpart Shamshad Ahmad claimed that he was not even aware of the existence of such an organization in his country. This assertion came despite the fact that the then Governor of Punjab, Shahid Hamid, and the then Information Minister, Mushahid Hussain, had paid a highly publicized visit to the Headquarters of the LeT at Muridhke near Lahore. Much water has since flowed through the Ganga and the Indus. The LeT has proclaimed its intention to plant the green flag of Islam in Washington, Tel Aviv and Delhi. Its cadres have been apprehended while preparing for acts of terrorism in places as far away as Washington and Sydney. It has made no secret of its support for the Taliban and Al Qaeda and was belatedly declared a terrorist organization by the Americans, British and others.

General Musharraf reacted predictably to western actions declaring Pakistani jihadi groups like the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and the LeT as terrorist organizations. He pretended to act against these groups, but allowed them to function under new names. He, however, acted firmly against elements in groups like the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), who were involved in plots against him personally, or joined the Al Qaeda in its moves to unseat the royalty in Saudi Arabia. The LeT functions under its new name - Jamaat ud Dawa - in Pakistan. Its cadres now carry arms more discreetly than in the past. And its communications networks actively give instructions to hundreds of its operatives, who have been infiltrated across the Line of Control (LOC) in J&K. More importantly, the LeT has evidently been assisted and tasked by the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) to carry out terrorist strikes all across India, targeting both strategic installations like the Bombay Stock Exchange and political leaders who are accused of abetting communal violence. The political objective of such moves is clear. By targeting political leaders, the LeT is aiming to incite communal violence and create a deep communal divide within India. This is similar to earlier ISI attempts to create a Hindu-Sikh divide in Punjab by targeting innocent Hindus in the state. The indictment of cadres of the LeT in last year's bomb blasts in Mumbai and the recent gunning down of its cadres in Gujarat has confirmed the role the Lashkar intends to undertake across India.

What makes the Lashkar different from other ISI backed terrorist groups operating in India? While other groups have confined their activities to wresting the Kashmir valley from India and occasionally pretending to be champions of Muslims in India, the LeT avers that its objective is the liberation of Muslims in India by the destabilization and unraveling of the Indian Union. Hence its determination to establish its presence all across India, from Kashmir to Kerala.

On June 29, the day after the talks between the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan ended, Kashmir's Police Chief Gopal Sharma made some very interesting disclosures. Sharma indicated that his force had broken up a complex LeT network in the State. Two of its top leaders, both Pakistani nationals, had been gunned down. Twenty of its cadres had been arrested. Sharma also disclosed that the group was planning to eliminate politically high profile persons and some police officers. They were even planning to destroy economic centres like the Bombay Stock Exchange and concentrate their activities in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Srinagar. He added that the group was acting under the directions of the LeT leadership based in Pakistan and that it had amongst others, killed Moulvi Mushtaq Ahmed, the uncle of prominent All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. It was also revealed that the LeT group was in close touch with its associates and Indian contacts, who were killed recently by the Gujarat Police. The LeT makes no secret that its cadres do indeed operate not only across the LOC but also elsewhere within India. A large number of LeT leaders and cadres, who are Pakistani nationals, have been killed in recent years in anti-terrorist operations within J&K.

Despite much talk of a fall in infiltration across the LOC in J&K, terrorists did strike on a number of occasions just before the composite dialogue with Pakistan commenced. These attacks included the killing of four Indian tourists on June 12, the brutal murder of an Indian railway Engineer and his brother on June 25, and the gunning down of 11 members of the Gujjar community, including women and children in the Jammu Region on June 26. They follow careful targeting across J&K of candidates and others taking an active part in the General Elections in April - May 2004. The ISI strategy in J&K is clear. They will use terrorist violence to disrupt political and economic life across the State. At the same time, they will target political activists who seek to distance themselves from Pakistan's ambitions, either by attacking them directly, or by killing their close relatives and associates. The assassinations of Abdul Ghani Lone and Moulvi Mushtaq Ahmed are a part of this strategy. It is significant that not a single leader of the APHC or the ruling People's Democratic Party in J&K has yet issued a single statement categorically condemning acts of terrorist violence and pointing out that Pakistani nationals involved in such activities have no business to enter the State. More importantly, a message has been sent across the Valley by the terrorists that they will not hesitate to target tourists and others who provide employment and earnings for the people of the State.

Gopal Sharma also made another interesting revelation. He indicated that the predominantly Pakistani LeT was now working in close coordination with the largest Kashmiri group operating in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Both the Hizb and the LeT are associated with the ISI-sponsored United Jihad Council that operates out of Muzaffrabad. The ISI evidently realized that the Punjabi speaking cadres of the LeT were no longer welcome in the Kashmir valley. They are, therefore, endeavoring to ensure that they receive a measure of support by coordinating their activities with the cadres of the Hizb, who have widespread local contacts. The ISI establishment has also been concerned by the split in the Hurriyat. They are uncomfortable with exclusively supporting the faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Hence the frantic efforts of Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar to persuade separatist leaders and groups to close ranks during his meetings with them in New Delhi. The effort will be to coax the various factions of the Hurriyat to fall in line through a judicious mix of fear and incentives. Security agencies in India have estimated that there are around 2,500-3,500 armed terrorists operating in J&K. Roughly sixty percent of these terrorists are estimated to be Pakistani nationals. With hundreds of trained terrorists having moved to staging areas for infiltration across the LOC, it should be evident that Pakistan has no intention of ending its use of violence and terrorism as instruments of State Policy.

It is interesting that on the very day that that Foreign Secretary Khokhar was meeting the Prime Minister and other leaders in Delhi two important security related meetings took place in Islamabad and New Delhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his colleagues in the Cabinet Committee on Security received a detailed briefing on the security situation from the Army Chief, General Nirmal Vij, the same day. General Musharraf also addressed a meeting of his senior army colleagues, including the Pakistan Army's nine Corps Commanders on June 28. The main focus of this meeting was on the situation on Pakistan's western borders with Afghanistan, though the situation on the LOC and the internal situation, including the attacks on General Musharraf and the Karachi Corps Commander also figured in the discussions. General Musharraf now has his hands full, with his Army and Air Force attacking and laying siege on their own countrymen in North and South Waziristan, along the Pak-Afghan border. General Musharraf has little choice in this matter as George Bush desperately needs to "get" Osama bin Laden before the US Presidential elections. The meeting of the Corps Commanders took place just before a visit to Pakistan by the American CENTCOM Chief General John Abizaid. The United States obviously wants General Musharraf to devote full attention to the operations against the Al Qaeda and not fritter away his energies on tensions with India. General Musharraf has little choice but to fall in line, in much the same manner as General Zia was all milk and honey and even proposed a "No War Pact" with India, when the US commenced its jihad against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Hence the sweet talk and soft approach of Mr. Khokhar.

New Delhi obviously has to embark on a process that enhances cooperation, builds confidence and seeks to resolve differences with Pakistan. But it would do well to remember that even as it treaded softly on issues like Pakistan's membership of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and its readmission to the Commonwealth, the Musharraf dispensation spared no effort to fulfill its ambitions on the Kashmir issue at the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Foreign Minister's Conference in Istanbul. The vicious propaganda against India on the State run Pakistan television and radio continues. But far more dangerous than all this is the ISI supported effort by the LeT to exacerbate communal tensions and target political leaders and economic centres across India. Has any thought been given to how the costs for Pakistan can be raised, if it persists with these efforts?

The research also showed that nearly one in three thinks that Western society is decadent and immoral and should be brought to an end. Sixteen per cent of British Muslims told the survey that they do not feel loyal towards Britain and 6 per cent went as far as saying the London bombings were justified.

After reading that, please read below and tell me if it's me or if there is a definite problem with comprehension.

Tahir Butt of the MSF said . . .

EXCUSE me, don't the rest of us need to hear about MUSLIMS being arrested for these attacks on US and British and Australian and Spanish who are THREEFOLD victims? They are targets of terrorists, targets of IslamoFascists, and targets of the MSM and weasely-eyed liberals.

Aklis Ali said There is tension when my family goes out. When my wife wears a hijab people think she's a terrorist. We don't feel safe - you never know if someone is going to attack you for being Muslim. 'Just because of a few fanatics, you can't blame all Muslims. We all have the same feeling about 7 July. We're human beings.'

EVERY American and Briton and Spaniard and Italian and Australian and Pole feels tension when they go out into crowds of people because they don't know if the person sitting near them on the train or bus or in a crowded area is wearing bombs underneath his over-sized jacket. "We" don't know if we're going to be attacked for being "Westerners" and living in our own Country. We have more than "feelings" about July 7. We will put our feelings into ACTION.

And the Muslim communities better think long and hard about doing something PRO-ACTIVE and doing it QUICKLY.

They can start by providing EVERYONE with Freedom of Religion and rescinding Shari law in their Countries. If the US does nothing else, WE MUST INSIST on Freedom of Religion in the Middle East. NO reprisals for converting away from Islam. None. Nada. Zero. Zip.

the older white British generation

Profiling again, are we, oh sultan of deceit?

a rise in Islamophobic-motivated attacks.

Only AFTER a rise in IslamoFascist-motivated attacks. You failed to mention that the attacks on Muslims were a reaction/retaliation for attacks on others.

reports of faith-hate incidents,

Okay, I'll play along. HOW is anyone to Evangelize if anything said to explain why religion A is better than Religion B is going to be "reported as a faith-hate incident?" Don't people get it? The IslamoFascists' best friend is the 'Moderate Muslim' who helps create legislation that in effect creates Sharia law and makes anything ANTI-Islam into a "faith-hate" crime (eventually punishable by death).

Has no one looked at what is subtly happening to our Freedom of Religion?

Or maybe I've stayed up past my bedtime and I've turned into Don Quixote.

"A close reading of the news will find virtually no mention of muslims assisting the authorities. That tells me they support the bombers."

Muslims always seem surprised to learn that one of their own has just bombed a bus or a train or a subway car. They always act as if they haven't a clue that there are extremists among them. You would think they would notice after a few decades of hijackings, beheadings, suicide bombings, that perhaps there's a wee bit of a problem. But no. They never do. One suspects they never will.

No. It's much easier for them to blame it all on the evil joooos and the evil Americans, even after decades of evidence to the contrary.

Anushka Asthana

Anushka is a Russian name; I don't know if Hindus have it or not. Asthana could be Russian; I don't know, could be both. I first heard of it in some Russian novel or short story.

From indiaculture.net:

"babynamesindia.com says that meaning of Anushka/Anoushka is 'lightning' It does not say whats the origin of this or if its a Sanskrit name. Is this correct? Also indiaparenting.com says that Anushka/Anoushka has russian origin and means 'term of endearment'. Can anyone tell me who is right?"

I found this:

"Anushka Asthana is, I'm quite certain, either a Sanskrit name or a Prakrit name. In other words, it is a Hindu or Indian name."
