Child shoots younger brother with grandmother's gun
7/26/2005, 12:39 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — Police are investigating the shooting of a 4-year-old boy, apparently by his 6-year-old brother who used a gun found under his grandmother's bed.

The 53-year-old grandmother woman was babysitting the boys Thursday when the older boy fired the .22-caliber revolver and hit his brother's right side, authorities said. The little boy was taken to Covenant Medical Center, where doctors said the wound was not life threatening, The Saginaw News reported.

Police said the details of the shooting are still unclear.

"Grandma gives one story. The kids give another," Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Mark Lively said.

He said the grandmother told police the boys were playing outside about 10 a.m. when she heard shots. They came inside and she saw the youngest bleeding.

Police have not found any blood or recovered the slug at the home, Lively said

Sad to see. Luckily it sounds like the kid's going to make it.

1. Stop.
2. Don't touch.
3. Leave the Area.
4. Tell an adult.

And Grandma needs a gun cabinent or locked area to put her gun in when kids are around.

All firearms in our house were up too high (or locked up) until all the kids were about 6 or so. But by the time they were old enough to walk, they were afraid to go near one without permission. We made sure of that!

"Go near Dad's guns" = "Get switched"

Kids are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for, but MUST be trained.

I'm happy the 4 year old wasn't seriously harmed!

Actually where I live in the country, everyone needs a .22 revolver around the house.

I keep the magazine separate from the pistol just in case.

When were you elected to decide what someone else needs?

If she's weak, maybe that's all she can handle. Better a .22 than nothing.

For just over $100 you can get a handgun safe with an electronic lock, push button, fits your hand so you can use it in the dark. 64,000 possible combinations, pick one to your liking. The 2 gun model costs a little more. I have 2 loaded handguns safely stored, yet available very quickly. Note that neither is a .22, thats locked up down stairs, these are a little bit larger. :)

Unfortunately I think these idiots need to be prosecuted. The irresponsibility displayed is appalling.

One of my favorite writers was Russell Annabel. He lived in Alaska from the early 1900's. I remember he once told a story of how he survived an attack by a She Wolf and her yearlings on his mule pack train.

He held them off, killing several with a Colt Woodsman. At the end of the story he said they ought to build a monument to the .22 .

What are you going to do with a .22 revolver? Certainly not home/personal protection. Varmints, you are better off with a .22 long gun.

"Grandma gives one story. The kids give another," Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Mark Lively said.

And the readers only get one story.

Not even enough here to argue about.

I doubt they are revolvers. For that kind of work those folks usually go for a .22 semi. And grandma really shouldn't be planning on putting bullets into the back of someone's neck.

You're right, it's much better to keep it in one's purse.

Generally, I'd say no, it would just make a crackhead mad. If you just want something to wave around, get a nice replica in a larger caliber.
