War on Illiteracy. It seems every President in the past few decades has a hanger on, relative, or staff member that decides they need a 'war' for the then current administration to get the average guy on the street to believe they're working for them.

There's a war on illiteracy? When did that start?

The War on Illiteracy will not be won until we seek out, pursue, and destroy all the illiterates, and those who fail to teach them how to read.

It's a war on terror for God's sake, we are at war with the terrorists. They are not "insurgents", they are not freedom fighters, they are a group of irreperably damaged human beings that must be eliminated.

Why yes, one of the lesser known 'wars'. We don't really notice them until they start to affect the deficit. 30 years and it should be pulling in as much as GSAVE and Johnson's War on Poverty

President Bush stumped for his education reform package at a Jacksonville school on Monday by breaking the complex plan down to one of its most compelling components: getting children to read.

With about 50 children sitting cross-legged on the floor before him, and his brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, at his side, the president called on members of Congress to set aside party differences and join him in a "war on illiteracy."

Yes. Apparently Congress has signed onto it as well. I guess No Child Excels More than Another was the first 'salvo' in this war. Wasted more than enough of my tax dollars, I'll tell you that...

I would honestly hope that one day a conservative thinktank would add up how much money has been wasted in just the past five years from the party of 'limited government'

"Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the National Press Club that if something is a war "then you think of people in uniform as being the solution." "

War on Poverty
War on Illiteracy

The leftist War on Religion

Unfortunately I do see a uniform in each of these...corrupt judges in robes forcing the rest of us to accept liberal actions.

"Nobody mentioned Saudi Arabia in same way. It is though the Saudis' are now immune."

The Saudis are very smart. They know very well how to work our government, both the politicians and officials. Payoffs galore, usually the subtle hard to track kind, or guaranteed employment in a lobbying firm flacking for the Saudis, or open ended consulting contracts that go on forever. In other words, Washington has been thoroughly corrupted. This has been written about before but, for some inexplicable reason, has not gotten very wide publicity. Our side is just as dirty as the Rats--the Saudi payoffs were and are equally distributed in an unbiased manner, thus assuring the Saudis of "cooperation" no matter which party is in power. Neat huh?

Perhaps this situation explains why that plane load of Saudis was ferried out of the U.S. right after 9/11.

"A bit much" is far different from your original accusation that it was "ridiculous."

I don't disagree with a single thing you've said about there being no 'monolithic' goal, or what those goals might be.

Which makes me wonder why we are even having this discussion..... since even you agree that some of them do want to 'destroy civilization.'

Good point. Want to talk about something else?

Sure. How's the weather where you live? It cooled off here........about 25 degrees in an hour last night.

Good stuff.

(Is that the kind of 'something else' you had in mind?? ;)

Seriously...........I drove through the worst rain I've ever driven in last evening (on I-71 on my way home from Akron).

I hope you're not getting that stuff! The cool air behind it, however, is just glorious.

(I knew you were kidding).

No, they are libertarian. As am I, mostly.

The administration long ago lost the propaganda war, if by sounding softer, more collegial, they can gin up public support, well, I wish them luck.

I'v tried to wrap my head around the modern situation and the only explanation that even begins to answer all the questions is that the GOP leadership has moved, generally, to the left over the years (when was the last time someone mentioned cutting entitlements or, God forbid, doing away with some useless gov't entity?), while the Left has moved even further left (socialism, humanism, globalism, secularism), giving the impression that the center has moved right.

All my criticism of the political right, President Bush, his advisors and congresscritters pales in comparison to my disgust and loathing of the political and cultural left.
