It's the responsibility of the media to get it right.
It's not the responsibility of the Administration to prove them wrong. These people have important work to do for the American people -- instead of just making up stories to call attention to their imagined audience and ruthless ambitions to get to the top in the news/show business.
Excellent point. It's a no-win situation: they "fail" to correct the media, and they're condoning misinformation getting out; they try to correct the media, and it's manipulation of the press. I have an idea: how about the media actually acting responsibly in its research and reporting of news stories?

Everything is O.K. as long as he did not break the law. Nothing has actually happened to him.
If we all believe that Karl Rove is an example of the right thing to do then, the Koran story should have been corrected before being printed. Newsweek was supposed to be aware of the implications of the story before they printed it and I would think the same would be expected of those in the military/government that were asked to verify the story.
Should people not do the right thing because they are afraid of the consequences?
Didn't think so.
Last time the administration told them to be careful they accused the Government of attempting to run their business. They erupted in hysterics, then spent months trying to prove we did flush a Koran down a toliet out of spite.
Olbermann, It is YOUR job to make sure your stories are truthful. It's the administration's job to defend this country. They aren't getting paid to be your editors so sit down, shut up, and learn how to do your job responsibly without malice instead of wasting your time being the puppet of loons that want the election results challenged because they cannot accept reality.

Republican administrations have been shooting down erroneous media stories for years now and the "professionals" just ignore them and keep on lying.

Or would somebody rather play politics with this? The way Craig Crawford reconstructed it, this one went similarly to the way the Killian Memos story evolved at the White House. The news organization turns to the administration for a denial. The administration says nothing. The news organization runs the story.
