It amazes me that the folks that design this stuff could look at popup ads and say with a straight face, "Oh, yeah! The visitors to our site are gonna LOVE this!"
I guess some people are just stupid.

Seventy percent of consumers said they were unlikely to purchase from, or even return to, a Web site that has pop-up advertising, registration log-on pages, software installation, or slow-loading pages, E-Commerce Times reports.
A study, commissioned by Hostway, a Chicago-based Web site hosting service, found that approximately 35 percent of visitors to commercial sites said pop-up ads were their number one pet peeve.
More than 24 percent of the respondents said they were extremely or somewhat likely to complain to the company when they were exasperated by a site.

Once again, common sense works just as well and usually a lot faster than most studies.
Drudge Report was removed from my bookmarks this morning for that very reason.
Clicked on two stories and got SIX pop-ups.

I quit going to Drudge when spyware was installed there. That was quite enough for me.

Were the popups the result of exiting the Drudge Report (code from the Drudge site), or due to code on the news sites you visited that were linked at Drudge's site? If it's the latter, Drudge isn't at fault. BTW, I noticed a while back that Drudge's own site popups appear now even while using Firefox with popup blocking enabled. A solution is:

The possible values are:0: Allow all popups from plugins.
1: Allow popups, but limit them to dom.popup_maximum.
2: Block popups from plugins.
3: Block popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.

Absolutely. Problem is users put up with Tracking cookies, Ad- and Malware.
You know what I can't stand is a site so over-Javaed it looks like a pinball machine.

That's exactly what happened at the Drudge Report, numerous popups caused me to quit going there.
