Planting Her Flag. Hillary Clinton is carefully positioning herself as a hawkish centrist
NewsWeek ^ | 7/29/05 | Eleanor Clift

Posted on 07/31/2005 12:01:51 PM PDT by Tumbleweed_Connection

Hillary Clinton wants to be the darling of the left and the candidate of the center, and why not? More than any other Democrat, save one—her husband—she knows what it takes to win, and she fully and completely comprehends the opposition.

Liberals went ballistic this week when Clinton called for a ceasefire among Democrats at a much ballyhooed appearance before the DLC, the centrist Democratic Leadership Council that helped elect her husband president. Clinton’s “Rodney King Moment,” is all about 2008, says a former John Kerry adviser: “What she’s saying is, ‘Why can’t we all get along and support me?’”

Clinton didn’t single out liberals, and her intent might have been more ecumenical in urging all wings of the party to turn their guns on the “hard-right ideology in Washington” instead of each other. But her presence at the DLC convention in Columbus, Ohio, spoke volumes. It said to the left that this is where she is planting her flag for the presidential race. And what she’s doing now is taking care of whatever perceived weaknesses she has, as well as those of the Democratic Party. She shouldn’t trim her principles, but she has the leeway to defy the liberal stereotypes. As a progressive in a country where half or more of voters are reflexively conservative, she has to find ideas that surprise people and grab their attention if she’s going to break through as a national candidate.

This kind of intraparty warfare is familiar ground for Democrats. Hillary’s comments were almost identical to the sentiments Bill Clinton voiced some 15 years ago at a DLC event when there was a dispute with the Democratic National Committee. Having the vast left-wing conspiracy after you isn’t a bad thing in a political climate where the liberal label is problematic.....

The only problem with this strategy is that Red Staters aren't as abjectly stupid as the leftists, feminazis, and minorities who vote Democrat. Conservatives see this clumsy attempt at deception and are disgusted by it.

You're right, we're not, but who have we chosen - at this moment in time - to run. Hell, we have not even uttered a single word about what is happening with recent nominations - if we sit back silently and let them run the show, why bother to win. Now the other side of the coin may be our objective - just sit back and watch the self-destruct machine do it magic - God I hope that is what is going on.

"Having the vast left-wing conspiracy after you isn’t a bad thing in a political climate where the liberal label is problematic."

Which explains why we should be skeptical anytime we read the far left is critical of Hillary. It's just a ruse so stupid voters think Hillary really really has shifted to the middle, or really really has become a hawk on defense.

But Eleanor has lost her mind, lost it, I tell you, to try and compare Hillary to Margaret Thatcher.

No, she doesn't stand for anything so I don't hate what she stands for. She's nothing but a core-less opportunist who lusts for power. At least with people like Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy you know where they stand and that they will stick to their core beliefs. Hillary is a fake trying to copy her valueless husband.

Hillary is a very very real threat and the thought of her as president makes me sick equally as much as the dodged bullet of sKerry almost winning. My hope for all our sakes is that you're right in thinking red-staters won't be fooled. What makes it scary is that a majority of Americans still absorb the BS coming out of the MSM. We all know that Hillary will have complete domination with the MSM to her advantage. On a positive note however, Americans are flocking towards Foxnews and "The New Media"(i.e. FR) in droves.

Even Juan Williams said it isn't inevitable she'll get the nomination. I think she'll be sabotaged by the other candidates from her own party, as another "inevitable heir apparent" Gary Hart probably was in 1988 (maybe Dukakis?).

She may be the darling of the liberal left, but she won in New York by appealing to upstate voters who are traditionally Republican...." - Clift

I've maintained for months that the 2004 Presidential election was mainly about pushing the Democrats as far to the left as possible (Dean? Kerry? give me a break). There was no real intention of winning, but it would give Hillary the opportunity to paint herself as a centrist leading up to the 2008 election.

Factor in the media's bias and acceptance of her "oh-i'm-a-centrist-moderate-because-i-say-i'm-a-centrist-moderate", and ouila -- Hillary the Moderate.

To Eleanor Clift anybody to the right of Josef Stalin is a centrist. On S.397, the bill to stop frivolous lawsuits against firearms manufacturers, Hitlery voted NO, along with other gun-grabbing hoplophobic moonbats like Schumer, Kennedy, Kerry, and Boxer. She's not a centrist by any stretch of the imagination.

The sad thing is that a lot of people will be bamboozled by Hitlery's phony march to the right.
