Although Lincoln spent several years in the Illinois legislature, it appears that he only ran once for national office before running for President.

In 1858 he lost a race for the Senate.

Shortly later, he won the presidency.

Good choices. I have been impressed with Coleman on the UN and Sessions on the judicial nominations.

strong economy low unemployment bolton cafta

Huh? Outside of Bolton, not here. The economy is weak(Thanks Granholm), unemployment is high(Thanks Granholm), and CAFTA is a disaster waiting to happen, much like Klinton's NAFTA.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine came in third in her race for Governor in 1994, behind the Democrat and an Independent (the eventual winner, Angus King, was the I). Two years later, she was elected to the Senate.

Not quite the same as losing a House race, but still...

Hackett's doing well is also due to the MSM giving him unconditional support.

I work with WKRC (a CBS affilate) in Cincinnati, and they pretty much ran 90% of all their news about Hackett in a postive light. I expect the same thing with the other news stations along with the newspapers.

won a second term despite historically difficult approval numbers

One could argue that this merely begs the question.

I don't think Rove is abysmal, but Kerry should never have even been close.

----Can you name any candidate who lost a House election and then went on to win a Senate seat?----

What am I, an encyclopedia? :)

Look, the Dems threw everything they had behind this guy, and got him to almost 50-50 in a 70-30 Republican stronghold. What they have in Paul Hackett is an attractive candidate who can fool people. Which, voila, is what they need to win a statewide election in a Bush state, particularly one as tantalizingly within their reach as Ohio.

Nafta was signed by GHWB, not Clinton. It was not a disaster. Did you know that since 2000 we've signed free trade agreements with Jordan, Indonesia, Australia, Monte Carlo and others?

And if not why? They didn't have a Nafta rhyming name?

That makes YOU the problem with the GOP.

Who would you want all the other Republicans to throw their vote on to enable Democrats to win, some pathetic third party?

Similar to Mark Dayton, who lost statewide elections and Democratic primaries before becoming a Senator.

Maria Cantwell lost her House seat after one term in 1994 and returned as a Senator. Strange.
