Democrats seek truce with Bolton

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democrats struck a conciliatory note over the appointment of John Bolton as Washington's UN ambassador, saying that their bitter opposition is over and that they will work to help him succeed in his new job.

"My fervent hope is now he'll do a good job. This is over with now," said Senator Christopher Dodd, who said Democrats are resigned to working with Bolton.

"He's going to be there for the next 13 months," Dodd, a staunch Bolton opponent, told NBC television. "At this point here, I want him to succeed."

US President George W. Bush on Monday made an end run around the US Senate, where Bolton's nomination was stalled by Democrats, and directly appointed him to the UN post, to the outrage of Democrats. Monday, an enraged Dodd vowed to keep a close eye on Bolton's performance at his new job.

By Tuesday however, he said Democrats were prepared to work with him.

"We've got serious issues there -- reforms of the UN ... Iran, Iraq, North Korea," Dodd said.

"Now we've got to rally around this and see if we can't make sure that our country is going to have an agenda at the UN that will serve our interests and the interests of our allies," he said.

A truce with Bolton? WTF? The same democrats that were screaming for the heads of all Enron exectutives are all silent about the corrupt to the core UN. The UN has stolen more from American taxpayers and the Iraqi people than all of the US corporate scandals combined but the democrats can not bring themselves to criticize this stinkin rotten filthy band of third world dictators and thugs. I'm just as willing to blast Dems as the next guy, but honestly, what's wrong with what Dodd said here? I mean, isn't that what he should say at this point? I could very well see us attacking Dems who keep trying to undermine Bolton after this appointment. But instead of trying to undermine him, Dodd is at least accepting defeat and trying not to make it worse.
