BUMP
I am all for anyone who wishes to donate to do so. She was smart enough to know what the ACLU stands for. I would think she would research the NAACP as well. I believe it is an organization that discriminates based on race. I pesonally would not want to be associated with such a group. This young woman is doing right to turn down the ACLU's donation. With any luck she may be the next Condi! :)
Well I just spoke to Helena. Second number I tried. She's awfully sweet! I told her about Free Republic and this thread and said "I don't have very much detail yet, but we'd like to help make at least a portion of that scholarship up for you" and that we all thought it was 'cool'! So I told her I'd call her in a few days, and left my number just so I wasn't a pranker. So--I've got her info. I have a paypal account with very low funds in it...or if someone is in Florida and wanted to open an account for this, that might work. What do you guys think?
Good for this girl. I hope someone makes up the dough for her.
How great is this? I just got a freepmail of the first $100 donation.
"...she was dismayed at what she perceived as the group's abortion rights stance on abortion and its opposition to prayer in public schools. "
How could she be so naive and be a scholarship winner?
the aclu stinks.

Ping
I have a paypal account too...I offered it earlier. I just wonder if people are that trustworthy?
I would be--I think that combined with an external web page (even a yahoo freebie) that listed amount and where it ultimately went would be a great idea. I'm sure the recipient could confirm the amount as well.
it's up to you how to handle--I did freepmail you her phone number.
Thanks
Sorry, I'm not that impressed.
How is it that her story made its way in print? Did she self-promote herself?
And her reasons for not liking the ACLU (which is indeed a damnable organization) are extremely weak -- *I* don't want government-sponsored prayers in schools, for goodness sake! And she said, "They want you to be able to choose whether you can get an abortion"? That sounds like a pro-abortionist pretending to talk like a pro-lifer.
Nah, I'm not that impressed, frankly. Call me a cynic.
It sounds like she agrees with their other stances, I guess. As I said before, if she supports the views of the NAACP, she has a lot to learn. But, there is hope.
Oh, being a Black Activist from Central Florida I am pretty sure she would just as soon reject a scholorship from a conservative group.
It would surprise me if she didn't.
She is most likely not conservative.
How could she be so naive and be a scholarship winner?
That's kind of my point. Something just doesn't seem right about this story. Perhaps she was hoping that by declining the ACLU scholarship, she'd get more money from others, and make a name for herself. Such self-promotion could come in handy in a few years when she's looking for work.
Or maybe she really is sweet and naive and uninformed about the ACLU until she did a bit of reading up on that organization.
My, how people are eager to give her money....
How about, instead of a cynic, you're past the point of thinking like a 17 year old --who maybe isn't the most articulate, but knows she doesn't believe in abortion.
I suppose. I'm always a bit cautious, though, when "private" decisions like this girl's make it into the news. I've done things that would make great news stories, but I've chosen not to promote myself....
But maybe having conservatives such as us help "replace" the funds lost by declining that scholarship will further affect her in a positive way. We Freepers are a generous group.
There is hope with young people like this around.
I wonder if FR offers scholarships to students? Is that possible? Think of the publicity...
I completely agree that we can be a generous group. I think if this is something individual freepers want to contribute to, we do a "statement of beliefs" and let her know that by accepting this donation in lieu of the scholarship she turned down, she's acknowledging the difference between the two ways of thinking. But I'm all for making up what was turned away.
Wow, good for her! Even with the leftie indoctrination in todays schools, some of the kids manage to come out of them with character and values! Great to see!
