The Orlando Sun-Sentinel ^ | August 4, 2005 | Jason Garcia

The decision leaves Harris, now a member of Congress from Sarasota, as the likely challenger to incumbent Democratic Senator Bill Nelson in what will be the most closely watched Senate campaigns in the country.

Good Ms. Harris deserves her day. The GOP should support Ms. Harris for her hard work and service to state and country.

Between this and Jeanine Pirro, it's Black Thursday for conservatives.

What does Jeanine Pirro have to do with conservatives?

Harris will be a great Senator compared to Nelson. We need every vote we can get in the senate. 60 is the magic #.

I never understood why Bense was considered a stronger general-election candidate than Katherine Harris. Jeb I can definitely see, and maybe Gen. Tommy Franks, and if one of them was running I would hope that Harris would step aside. But a male conservative from the Panhandle who's never run statewide probably won't do as well in the I-4 Corridor that would a female conservative from Sarasota such as Harris, who has already been elected by wide margins statewide.

Bill Nelson will not be easy to beat, but Katherine Harris has a better chance than just about anyone. She will energize the conservative vote and cause the Democrats to overreach when they start whining about the 2000 election once again, a combination that helped the GOP win huge in 2002 and comfortably in 2004.

This is great...Harris is gonna work really hard and hopefully be the next Senator from FL...slowly but surely...Sean Hannity told her he would come down and help on her bus tour...he really helped last election...it's called get-out-the-vote!

Totally disagree. He wasn't ever going to beat Harris in the primary anyway, so why make it divisive?

Barring Jeb or Tom Galligher getting into the race, I will support Harris.

I recognize that she's not the strongest possible candidate, but the doom and gloom surrounding her is just stupid. She could win, and it's better that barring a realistic challenge to her, that we just rally around her.

I wouldn't be too broken up. Pirro needs to run for NY Attorney-General, but she is a RINO, anyhow. Bense, as I stated before, doesn't look like the right person to run for Senator in Florida.

Removing Hitlery from the Senate is a conservative cause, even if her replacement is a RINO.

Bense was considered stronger because:

"I never understood why Bense was considered a stronger general-election candidate than Katherine Harris."

1.) His Horatio Alger-type background.

2.) His potential for growth in voter support.

One poll had him trailing Nelson by only 45% to 38%, closer than Harris, and that was in the face of low voter I.D.

But it won't happen. Harris has nearly 100% name I.D., yet consistantly polls no better than 40% and trails by double digits. There is very little potential for growth.

isnt Katherine Harris good for Conservatives

Had Pirro won, she would be attacked as a RINO before she took her seat

Well, hopefully someone else will drop into the race before too long. Too bad we can't persuade Jeb or Frank Brogan to jump in.

She has somewhat of an image problem among independents, but I don't think it's insurmountable. It seems to me to be extremely stupid to like Bush and not like Harris, if your reason for not liking Harris is the 2000 recount stuff. And Bush just cleaned up in Florida.

Harris just needs to drive Nelson's negatives up, and get in the public eye a little more and show that she's not the dem cartoon image, and I think she'll have a decent chance.

Jeb is the only person that can beat both Harris and Nelson. I sure wish his brother would lean on him.
