Former police chief Haulk files to run for CIty Council By PETER J. HOVANEC -- MONROE (Aug. 5, 2005)
With about three hours left in the municipal filing period, the races keep getting more interesting.
On the last full day of filing, former Monroe Police Chief Bobby Haulk joined the race for Monroe City Council. Haulk retired in June from after being ousted by the former city manager and many of the council members he is looking to join. Haulk first retired Oct. 28, reportedly after being given an ultimatum by the council to resign or be fired. He was later rehired to review red-light camera photos at the same salary he made as chief, $78,769 per year.
Haulk joins incumbents Bob Smith and P.E. Bazemore as well as Nick Polyzos, Jack Smoluk Sharon Talford, John Ashcraft Jr. and Rickie Williams in the race to fill the three council seats up for election. Incumbent councilman Bobby Kilgore has opted to run for mayor and will face former Union County Commissioner Paul Standridge for that seat.
The last full day also brought out four candidates for the Waxhaw Board of Commissioners. Incumbent Sylvester McManus, Jane Fialka, Anson Jenkins and Jim Lineberger joined George Sandberg, Robert Maxwell and Max Walker in the race to fill the three seats up for election.
In Unionville, incumbent mayor Larry Simpson filed to keep his seat and will face Jeff Gerber.
Chris Anderson filed to fill the unexpired council term in Wesley Chapel and is the lone candidate for that seat. Rick Croffut, Sonya Pierce and Eyad Abuwar have filed to fill the two remaining council seats.
Monroe and Hemby Bridge will have their elections on Oct. 11, while the remainder of the municipalities will have their elections on Nov. 8.
The filing period will run through noon today at the Union County Board of Elections office at 316-B E. Windsor St.
All filing fees are $5 and must be paid by check.

CORRECTION -- The fired Monroe, NC Police Chief is running for City Council, not Mayor.

LOL I was thinking the same thing....huh?
The whole thing is actually much better than that. Any of our local media outlets could probably have earned a Pulitzer for dissecting the whole matter of the Monroe Police Department, The City Council, The Mayor, and the City Manager. There are a few posts around Freepville that give greater detail on EACH of these.
If you were a Monrovian, it would all seem very normal and average for Union County, NC politics, where Monroe, NC is the county seat. HDRabon
The title is fixed now I see...lol.
The Police Chief, was fired by the Monroe City Council and the City Manager, who "redesigned" the Police Department over a two or so year period PRIOR TO the firing of the Police Chief. Shortly thereafter, the City Council fired the City Manager, paying him a HUGE amount of money and benefits to keep quiet about why he was fired.
TERRIBLY sorry about being so confusing by trying to relate so much in a succinct space. For the uninitiated it is confusing anyway. Must do better next time!
