NCAA Bans Indian Mascots During Postseason
AP ^ | Aug 5, 2005

Posted on 08/05/2005 8:52:05 AM PDT by Leroy S. Mort

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.

Nicknames or mascots deemed ``hostile or abusive'' would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

``What each institution decides to do is really its own business'' outside NCAA championship events, he said.

Guidelines were not immediately available on which logos and nicknames would be considered ``hostile or abusive.''

The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.

Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).

The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.

Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.

Oh, come on now (so to speak). Wouldn't it be a hoot for the Seminole Tribe to file suit claiming violation of their right to expression as given through their permission to Florida State to use the name? It would have the PC supporters arguing against the people they were pretending to protect.

The St. John's name Redmen had nothing at all to do with indians. (Think Orangemen of Syracuse.) However they did used to have an indian mascot.

I'm sure that changing the names of the mascots will finally pull Native Americans out of the poverty stricken situations most of them find themselves in.

I stopped contributing to my alma mater after they changed the name of the school mascot for politically-correct reasons like this.

Looks like I'm going to start boycotting NCAA events now, too.

First of all, and I know he had little to nothing to do with this, but Myles Brand may be the biggest tool on the face of the earth.

Every Illinios fan that goes to an NCAA event should dress in full Indian garb. Every single one.

What about the farmers being offended by the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

I don't even want to think of Dr. Pierce's feelings regarding the University of Iowa mascot....that's just offensive to TV Korean War doctors everywhere...

So far, (and surprisingly), the University of Illinois has withstood the PC pressure to change the school's team name and mascot. Leave the Chief alone, NCAA.

As a voting member of the Choctaw nation (seriously) I would like to formally lodge a protest against the NCAA for forcing schools to abandon mascots who personify the proud heritage of native people. Seeking to pacify a few in the name of political correctness they are actually further repressing an honorable link to the history and remembrance of a proud people who have already been marginalized by public actions and policies.

As the saying goes: Thanks for nothing.

I could understand someone having a problem with a mascot if it represented their people in a goofy or foolish way or was directly negative....but in most cases they are named in honor of the strength, toughness and pride of their namesake.
Now...this still doesn't answer for the Benson High Bunnies here in Omaha.

NCAA president's address while still pres at Indiana University. This is all you need to know about Brand.

In a commencement titled entitled “Making a Moral Difference” at Atlanta’s Oglethorpe University in 2003, Myles Brand, who had just assumed the role of president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association quoted Jane Addams. He read, “To attain individual morality in an age of demanding social morality, to pride one’s self on the results of personal effort when the time demands social adjustment, is utterly to fail to apprehend the situation.”

He went on to quote socialist and supporter of women’s suffrage, Mary Heaton Vorse, who said in her book A Footnote to Folly: “When a new idea assaults the power of established authority, authority always screams out that morality has been affronted. It makes no difference if this idea is that the world is round or that women should vote or that the workers should control industry.”

"Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles)."

Good gosh! Warriors is a tribute, and it's deemed offensive?!
I have some Irish in me, let me be the first to call for Notre Dame to change it's mascot! (Hit the NCAA where it counts, the wallet). Fighting Irish is certainly more offensive than Warrior!
Oh, and I wish they'd force my alma mater to change it's mascot. Zips. I'm offended by how stupid it is. :)

The "Fightin'" Irish is probably the most offensive of them all (the only thing that would make it worse is the "Drunken, Fightin'" Irish) and they seem to accept it just fine. In fact, rumor has it that a few Irishmen (is that PC? I know "Chinaman" is.) founded the school. But that's probably just an urban legend.

Two possible solutions: First, if teams do change their names, during the postseason the student body could wear full headress in the stands. If teams decide to change their names, I suggest "The White Dominators." The PC crowd should love that.

Indians would capture white women, rape them, and leave them for the squaws to take care off, now the squaws did not treat the white women nicely because they were jealous of all the attention they were getting from the men.

Just some indian history.

Have any of you ever pondered the term "Yankee" or the real meaning behind the song title "Yankee Doodle Dandy"?

Yankee doodle dandy translated from the British slang of the late 1700's means self pleasuring cross-dresser.

As an American I am deeply offended by that term and I think the ACLU should sue.

You let things bother you too easily. I grew up with the goofy Indians logo, and I can tell you, I never once, not once, considered that logo representative of native Americans. The Indians were named to honor a native American player for the team, (Cleveland Spiders at the time).
The Fighting Irish mascot is a leprechan, why doesn't that bother you? I mean, all all irish small in stature and combative?
The Vikings use a primitive guy with a hammer. Why doesn't that bother you? Do you think Scandanavians are violent and carry weapons?

*sigh* No wonder PC rules.

The University of Massachusetts(UMASS) were once known as the Redmen but that was changed to Minutemen. The Minutemen name was challenged by minority students who thought the image of white men with rifles was intimidating but after heated debate the Minutemen name remains. They should have changed the name to the UMASS Debaters.
