Man is 41st member of gang caught in Border Patrol sector this fiscal year
MISSION TEXAS U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents arrested another Mara Salvatrucha gang member south of Mission this week, bringing the annual total of apprehensions of "Maras" in the Rio Grande Valley Sector to 41.
Roy Cervantes, a local spokesman for the agency, said agents were working the area near Stewart Road and Military Highway when they spotted a group of seven men who appeared to be undocumented immigrants.
One 21-year-old man had several tattoos, Cervantes said, "indicating he was involved" in the notorious gang with well-known ties to drug and human trafficking. He did not have any drugs or weapons in his possession.
The Mara Salvatrucha gang, also referred to as MS-13, formed when people began fleeing El Salvador because of civil war. They settled primarily in Los Angeles. Since the 1980s, the gang has spread across the United States and now has members from many Central American countries. Some lawmakers have claimed the gang has ties to al-Qaida.
Cervantes said the seven were transported to the Border Patrol office and interviewed by intelligence agents. The "man of interest," whose name was not released, admitted to being or having been a member of MS-13, he said.
Border Patrol agents conducted a criminal history check using the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, or IAFIS, on the undocumented immigrant and found no outstanding warrants or arrests in the United States. And the man had no prior deportations.
The Mara Salvatrucha was detained and prosecuted for illegal entry. He appeared before a federal magistrate Thursday morning.
"Any alien we arrest that is affiliated with any gang is cause for a mandatory detention," Cervantes said.
This differs from the "catch and release" policy agents are forced to employ with many undocumented immigrants. Because of limited bed space at the detention center, agents catch "Other than Mexicans," known as OTMs, and must release them on their own recognizance. The immigrant must only promise to return for a deportation hearing. The Border Patrol said almost 125,000 OTMs were released nationwide from September 2000 until the end of May 2005, The Associated Press has reported.
"He should be at one of the county jails," Cervantes said, explaining that the MS-13 member was turned over to the custody of U.S. Marshals.
According to Monitor archives, on June 12, only 26 Mara Salvatruchas had been apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley Sector for the 2004-05 fiscal year. Since mid-June, agents have caught 15 more Mara Salvatruchas.
Ping
Thousands of these clowns and Border Patrol catches one. Nice start.
My thoughts. It's like 3,000,000 enter, and 600,000 are caught. Does not make me feel better.
Actually they've caught 41 this year but who knows how many get thru when they blend in with other groups.
MS-13 Ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.

SOoooo.....journalist.....WHAT do the TATOOS say, look like, or otherwise resemble? We might be able to catch a few more if someone would tell us!
Thanks for the link to those photos Calpernia.
Thanks, I read your links....and now I KNOW WHAT TATTOOS to look for on the Mexicans working on the housing around us....1000 houses in the next few years.....
bump!
From what I've seen MS-13 has no local, support, they exist solely by raw brutality and their stockpile of cocaine just south of the border.
Now that attention has been focused on them I doubt that they will last long.
But the anti-immigrant crowd isn't helping by insisting that people who inform on MS-13 be locked up in the same detention facility with them.
My guess is they have thousands who do not have any tatoos
identifying them...not to mention their handlers and paying
clients..who are also less obtrusive...
Still trying to portray everyone who is enraged about millions of illegal aliens as "anti-immigrant racists"?
Is that working for you?
LOL!
Do you have a day job at the New York Times?
they are already here in Tulsa, OK.... pushing the hoover crips out. 3 kids (and by kids I mean children under 10) already shot in broad daylight this summer.
ping
Which means roughly 410 MS-13 members got through...
Now that's food for though! Don't you think so President Bush?
