TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State University doesn't plan to change its "Seminoles" nickname.
The NCAA decided today to ban schools using Native American names and symbols from hosting championship events. But Florida State President T-K Wetherell says he'll sue the NCAA for its - quote - "outrageous and insulting" decision.
Wetherell says - quote - "This university will forever be associated with the "unconquered" spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida."
The NCAA decided to ban the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments. And nicknames or mascots deemed hostile or abusive won't be allowed on team uniforms at collegiate tournaments after February First.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida has issued a resolution supporting Florida State's "Seminoles" nickname.

Isn't the team name sanctioned by the Seminole tribe?

Seems that the PC crowd is reduced to defining "victims" who don't consider themselves victims. Good for the Seminoles.

I wonder if the Native American movement would be happy if it was forbidden to ever mention them, their tribe names, or acknowledge that they ever existed, so then they could never be offended.
Maybe that is what is needed - bring any mention of an Indian tribe down to the same level as the N word, never say it.
How about the universities do to the NCAA brainstems essentially what the individual union memberships did to the AFL-CIO?

The pc liberals have been trying this for years..looks like they finally got their wish...except we got a lot of Nole alumni who are lawyers and think we can beat this crap. This is ridiculous. We have permission from the Seminole tribe in Florida to use their name. This is bs.

PC libs will lose this one. No way the FL Seminole crowd is going to put away their Seminole-logo'd stuff.
I guess Notre Dame's Leprechaun with an attitude is sill OK.
This argument has never been about Indians being upset over team names and logos. It's been about Liberals being upset on their behalf as they desperately search for another victim class.
