Guardians laud Michael Schiavo for fulfilling wife's wishes
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | 08/05/05 | MAYA BELL

DORAL, Fla. - (KRT) - He has been rebuked by the Vatican, castigated by Congress and slandered on the Internet, but Michael Schiavo was welcomed as a hero Friday by a state organization whose members make end-of-life decisions for people unable to make them for themselves.

The Florida State Guardianship Association bestowed its Guardian of the Year Award on Schiavo for carrying out his wife's wishes not to be kept alive artificially despite a drumbeat of withering criticism.

In a rare public appearance, Schiavo, 42, modestly accepted the award at the association's 18th annual conference at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa west of Miami.

"As you know," he said, "I'm not much of a speechmaker. I don't talk much. But on behalf of my wife Theresa, I thank you."

Association members, most of whom are appointed by judges to represent people who have been declared incapacitated, acknowledged Schiavo was a controversial choice and they anticipate a backlash. After all, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush joined world leaders from the president to the pope in aligning themselves with Bob and Mary Schindler, the couple who fought their son-on-law's effort to remove the feeding tube that kept their severely brain-damaged daughter alive for 15 years.

But, group members said, Michael Schiavo's unwavering commitment to honoring his wife's wishes in the face of public scrutiny and enmity embodied the professionalism and compassion with which court-appointed guardians quietly carry out their duties every day.

"We see a lot of situations where family steps away," said association president-elect Michelle Kenney, a care manager and professional guardian in Broward County. "He stuck by. He didn't walk away."

Added past president Joan Nelson Hook, an attorney from New Port Richey: "He was an ordinary guardian who carried out his duties in extraordinary ways."

I see provable fact and truth have no place here. Honesty and reality checked out of this media charged event months ago.
Did anyone ever compare the lies that the media told to the direct provable facts confirmed by the medical examiners report?
I don't think people were interested in the actual provable truth, they had way too much fun making up their own as they went along.
What most of you do not want to see is that one day some of you will be in a position to have to carry out the wishes of someone you love very much. I take it from your comments that you hope you will get as much government interference and published media fantasy/lies in your own case as Michael did in his long fight to carry out the wishes of his wife. The #1 reality of this case is that the media got filthy rich because they created this story and then spurred it on with lies for many weeks. Now we have Mark Furhman down there still draining the situation of even more dollars as he wrights a book as if he were there and actually knows anything about the case. These people are vultures who feed on the death and misery of others!

There was no 'good' answer in the Terri Schiavo case, an answer that would please everyone.

Undoubtedly, Terri Schiavo was brain dead, her electroencephlogram had flat-lined. Furthermore, CAT scans had shown severe brain atrophy, indicative of damage that would never repair. But, at the same time, imposing euthanasia is not a really comfortable option.

I might have had some sympathy for the Schindler's in this case. However, I do not have any sympathy for them, now. Why? They chose Randall Terry as a spokeperson. Randall Terry, the fanatic and psychopathic bigot.

Some documented Radall Terry quotes, indicating the degree of his fanatacism:

1. "I want you to just let a wave of intolerance wash over you. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good ... if a Christian voted for Clinton, he sinned against God. It's that simple. Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty, we are called by God to conquer this country..."

Randall Terry is calling for a civil war. His call for hatred sounds an awful like Palpatine in the Star Wars Movies, or in the real world, Hitler blaming the Jews for all of Germany's woes.

2. "When I, or people like me, are running the country, you'd better flee, because we will find you, we will try you, and we will execute you. I mean every word of it. I will make it part of my mission to see to it that they are tried and executed... If we're going to have true reformation in America, it is because men once again, if I may use a worn out expression, have righteous testoserone flowing through their veins. They are not afraid of contempt for their contemporaries. They are not even here to get along. They are here to take over..."

Randall Terry is calling for killing everyone he does not like. That sounds an awful lot like 'The Final Solution'.

Randall Terry is truly a dangerous nut case. The fact, the Schindler's would ally themselves with him, discredits their position on the issues.

those are indeed sick things to say, that you attribute to Randall Terry. How about citing and linking to the sources, you know, just to back them up.

I've read Fuhrman's book. It's not up to the same standard of quality as his others. Read it, if you like, though.

There was no 'good' answer in the Terri Schiavo case, an answer that would please everyone.

How about remove the feeding tube but let the parents try to feed Terri orally? If they succeed, great. If not, too bad.

Is there any way in which that would have wrongfully harmed anyone?

It is very simple to find the Randall Terry Quotations: Just go into Yahoo! and use "Randall Terry Quotations" for a search string. The quotations are on a number of web sites.

BTW: Randall Terry is evidently a convicted felon. Terry spent 5 months in Federal prison, which means the real sentence was more than a year and one day (a good rule of thumb for deciding if a crime was a felony).

I live in FL. I have seen their idea of "guardianship" for children through social services and through this organization.

I keep thinking this is the group Ronald Reagan was thinking of when he said, "The scariest words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help you.'"

I've seen guardians destroy families and lives, because of perverted liberal socialistic ideas - they step in where not needed or wanted and wreck lives - and feel self-satisfied doing it, with the full weight of nanny government behind them.

Organizations like this is why I am a conservative. Beware lest these liberal do-gooders ever get your life in their hands.
