ALBANY, N.Y. Jeanine Pirro (search), the high-profile district attorney from suburban Westchester County, will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (search) bid for re-election next year, a top adviser said Monday. The adviser, speaking only on condition of anonymity to allow Pirro to make the announcement herself, said the district attorney planned to tour the state Wednesday to formally announce her decision. Pirro began calling top New York Republicans Sunday night to tell them of her decision, said the adviser and another top Republican source familiar with her plans. There was no immediate comment Monday from Pirro. Pirro, 53, announced May 23 she would not seek a fourth term as district attorney, but would run for statewide office in 2006. She would not say whether that would be U.S. Senate, governor if fellow Republican Gov. George Pataki (search) did not seek a fourth term or state attorney general, an office being vacated by Democrat Eliot Spitzer (search), who is running for governor. Pirro, born in Elmira, has won praise for her Internet stings of would-be child molesters, work with battered women and her battle against underage drinking. She is often seen on national television as a commentator on high-profile crimes. In 1997, she made People magazine's "most beautiful people" list. She has been a supporter of abortion rights. Pirro was re-elected district attorney in 2001 while her husband, lawyer-lobbyist Albert Pirro, was in federal prison for tax fraud, and he has been an issue in most of her campaigns.

Guess she changed her mind.
Pirro is going to get clobbered.
I have been hoping the Rudy would run. Seems he would have a good chance.
fyi
You heard it here first.
pirro2006.org is under construction. I wonder if Pirro has it or Hillary has it.
Can't say I've been impressed by her, but I will vote for anyone other than Clinton. I'd feel better if she lost that creepy husband.
Interesting, that both she and Clinton have creepy husbands that can only be political liabilities.
Of course, she has to get the nomination. I'm still hoping for that darkhorse candidate, if you know who I mean? :)
Who??
.
I'm a little slow today, do you mean Rudy?

WHY MISSUS CLINTON IS DANGEROUS FOR THE CHILDREN, FOR AMERICA, FOR THE WORLD madhillary.com (coming soon) madhillary.blogspot.com COPYRIGHT MIA T 2005 |

Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
She is going to get clobbered, but she'll force Hillary to expend a big effort. If Pirro doesn't run, Hillary can just keep building her war chest.
Pirro's taking one for the team here, to earn the party loyalty down the road.
I'd reserve that judgement, Rod. I saw this lady on O'Reilly and I think she's a force to be reckoned with.
What I especially like about Pirro is that her championing of the abused woman would put clinton's abuse of women in stark relief.
I believe this issue has the potential to RAPIDLY turn the numbers around.
Missus clinton needs the vote of every moderate woman extant to offset her almost universal repulsiveness to men.
Inform these women of the clinton rapes and predation, and that support can go south fast.
This makes the most sense out of any other reason I can think of.
Yes
Good point

So true, Mia T, and you've done a wonderful job spreading the word. Keep up the good work.
I remember a discussion in 2000 about Hillary! after she'd been elected. The observation was that, with all the talk of New Yorkers being sophisticated, they behaved like star-struck yokels. The vaunted New York press corps protected her like they've protected no one else.
More than anything, if Pirro does get the GOP nomination, Hillary will be pissed that she's got to start dieting, combing her hair and wearing make-up again. She's probably checkikng into a fat farm as this news breaks!
Even if Pirro has only the chance of a snowball in hell, someone's got to run against The Beast. Good luck to her and I'll support her financially!
You're right, AD. And its telling that these yokelish, pseudo-sophisticates have hitched their wagons to such a lightless star.
This is good news.
Pirro is the best candidate to take on Hillary Clinton.
They're both women. This cancels out any "guy picking on girl" factor. Pirro can go right after her with both barrels and hold nothing back. No chivalry is expected of a woman dealing with another women.
They both have naughty husbands, but this hurts Hillary more. The problem is that the Democrats will not be able to resist whaling on Pirro's husband. But that will then legitimize open season on Hillary Clinton because of her husband, reminding everyone. Recall that Hillary won upstate in New York because quite a few moderate Republicans voted for her. That's not going to happen so easily this time.
Pirro is a prosecutor. She's tough, aggressive and successful. Clinton is not a successful careerwoman. She's a successful politician's wife. In head to head debate, Pirro will be much more composed and much more capable of taking the fight to her enemy, thinking on her feet, than Hillary. Hillary always gets a pass. When she was running against Lazio, she got a pass because her husband was still President, and because Lazio was like a little boy with a cute face and some political rhetoric.
Both are pro-choice. That's a horror, but it means that the standard advantage for women Democrats will not be there.
The abuse of women business will not help Hillary, but Pirro's position on the subject will help her.
Hillary will be bloodied by this fight. If she loses it, her political career is over. Therefore, she will have to dig in in New York, expend resources, and fight. The whole Democratic Party will have to focus on the New York Senate race.
All of the bad stuff will come out here, and will be broadcast to the world. New York Democrats will all come out to vote for their Presidential contender, but lots of New York independents will come out along with the whole Republican contingent.
Pirro can win this race.
And the closer that comes to being so, the more brutal Hillary and the Democrats will become, because if Hillary is defeated by Jeanine Pirro, it is the end of Team Clinton.
My opinion is that CBS"news" picked a bad one on purpose. No surprise there!
Oh, and by the way, there are lots of Democrats who don't like Hillary Clinton, who don't want to see her advance to the top, and who know that if she loses in New York, she is finished.
Every Democratic presidential hopeful out there has a reason to not pull too hard on the oars in this New York Senate race.
she cannot win. Hillary has gotten only 100% positive media coverage in NYS for the last 5 years, and will get the same in this race. Pirro is still a relative unknown. Only Rudy or Pataki could have beaten Hillary.
she should have run for AG, she could have won that, instead now we will get Andrew Cuomo.
that's is the correct assessment of this.
I am dissapointed in Pataki - his political career is over now. His presidential run will last about 2 months.
Excellent analysis.
Pataki is a fool for not running for the Senate in 2000 when Giuliani dropped out. Even if he had lost he would have remained as governor.
don't get your hopes up. NYS has 2 million more registered Ds then Rs. In the 2000 race, the idea that she was an "outsider" helped keep it close. After 6 years, that is no longer going to play, the media has seen to it that she is "connected" with NY issues.
Interesting analysis. Of course I will support her if she gets the nod. And maybe she should be the candidate.
But the feeling among my friends (all Hillary haters) is that Piro has unnecessarily politicized the DA's office. From a Westchester resident's pov she spends a lot of time on things that have nothing to do with her current job.
The local Gannett paper just did a job on her use of body guards. The media paints her as using a high ranking officer who is set to make an obscene amount of overtime. The innuendo is that much of this use is to cover her at non-job related political and pr type events.
This was front-page (& local cable) fodder. She should nip this in the bud, perhaps reimbursing the County for body-guard coverage at strictly political events?
Piro will have a hard time taking her own County, Westchester. I hate to believe it, but I can't see it not going to Hillary. She may get upstate, but I think Westchester will be critical.
thanx :)
Maybe she can't win.
But in the course, it will be a good stalking horse campaign against Hillary Clinton. Hillary will have to focus on defending her seat.
Let's put it this way: if Hillary does NOT run, and run pretty hard, she certainly can lose in New York. New York has a Republican governor, and Republican Senate leader, and a Republican mayor of the City of New York itself.
It's not Massachussetts. It's not a Democratic slam-dunk state by any means.
If Hillary does not campaign hard, she will lose.
So, she'll campaign hard.
And waste time, money, energy.
And she will make mistakes.
We should assume that Rove and the Republican establishment understands perfectly well what is at stake in this fight, and that money will pour in from across the nation.
Pirro will have the financial resources to tackle Hillary Clinton.
And whatever rip is taken at her private life invites a "back at ya!" about Hillary Clinton's own personal corruption, and the corruption and criminality of her husband.
It'll be an ugly, dark and nasty campaign, and Hillary will not emerge from it undamaged. She did not have to fight for the office when she ran against Lazio.
But she will have to fight for her political life this time. She has NEVER been made to do that.
And she might very well prove to be the brittle, abrasive person she sometimes appears to be.
Pirro could win.
I admire your optimism.
but frankly, the media campaigns for Hillary everyday - she herself has to do very little except show up at one or two debates and answer some softball questions that have likely been provided to her in advance.
Pirro is going to get clobbered.
Yeah, no chance w/voter fraud by the liberals.
one husband a rapist and adulterer.
He is that and much more. Those 'wrongs' were to individuals - what about his 'wrongs' to our country.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
That will lose her upstate New York.
She won last time because of upstate New York, which usually goes Republican. Lazio didn't spend a lot of time there. Hillary spent a long, long, long time there.
That "backfield" is naturally Pirro country.
Hillary would have to spend the same time she did last time in order to hold onto it, and might not be able to do that. Media softballs or hardballs won't make the difference up there. Diner chats will.
When Hillary was running last time, her husband was President of the United States, and Lazio was a kid, a nobody. He didn't go outstate, because he assumed it would vote for him. It didn't. But had Hillary not spent so much time and effort outstate, it probably would have gone for Lazio.
Pirro is a different bird. She has a lot more political experience than Hillary Clinton. She has run in a lot more elections. She is an executive. She makes her living by talking and arguing cases. She weathered the storm of her husbands criminality, and unlike Clinton, there is no indication of any sort that Pirro was a co-conspirator.
Does that matter?
Not if nobody brings up husbands and backgrounds. But the Democrats will charge in and try to make an issue of that. Pirro will respond in kind ad hominem against Hillary Clinton herself, the unindicted co-conspirator in the Clinton White House scandals, the abuse of women.
Prosecutors are not shy, retiring types.
There is no reason, at all, to believe that right up there on stage at the debates that Pirro won't call Clinton out on her own abuse of women to protect her husband's criminality.
Hillary will be on the defensive this entire campaign, and that's not where she is used to being.
Two weeks ago, the local liberal Westchester news starting attacking Pirro so it gave me a heads up that Pirro may be running against Hellary - either that or was a warning to Pirro what she will be in for.
Intimination is a clinton mo - remember all the IRS audits that were issued for those that came forward against willy.
I like the way you think!
This is good news. If anyone can beat Hillary, Jeanine can.
The local Gannett paper -
Yes, the smear campaign began before Pirro announced her plans to run. Coincidence? NO Expected? Yes
Local smear from the local liberal rag.
and a Republican mayor of the City of New York itself
That was a demo before he decided to run. He is NO Rudy!
No, he's no Rudy.
But there are a few points here.
First, Rudy was able to win.
Why? Tough prosecutor in bad times in New York.
A Republican has been in the mayor's mansion for almost 12 years, and it'll be at least 16.
Second, Bloomberg was always a Democrat, but he doesn't govern like a Democrat. He governs like a Republican businessman. He is tightfisted and tough in negotiations.
Maybe he was a registered Dem for a long, long time, but he ran as a Republican and he certainly acts like a New York Republican, not like a shrill-shrieking special-interest-captive New York Democrat.
Statewide elections aren't won in New York City. NYC is a given. They're won upstate and in the suburbs, where half the population lives.
If Hillary cannot take upstate New York again, she loses.
Lazio didn't fight up there.
Pirro will.
Hillary's going to have a tough battle on her hands, particularly since the initial Democratic character-assassination vomit-fest on Pirro, to commence in earnest today, is going to really piss Jeanine off.
Let me put it a third way: Bloomberg's no Rudy, but Jeanine Pirro IS, and that spells deep kim-chee for Mrs. Clinton.
Not necessarily. While Clintoon currently has a sizable lead over Pirro in the polls, when asked whether they approve of Pirro, something like 38% of the people polled had no opinion because they had never heard of her. Pirro will never beat the Hildebeast in NYC, but she is very popular in the northern suburbs, and I expect her popularity to spread to Nassau and Suffolk Counties once the campaign heats up. They will silently agree that their respective husbands are off-limits, although I suspect their staffs will leak some zingers. The campaign may very well come down to issues like who is the least annoying, who has the nicer clothes, and who is more attractive. Pirro wins hands down on all three issues.
