NAGASAKI, Japan (AP) -- A siren wailed and a bronze bell rang out through the air Tuesday as Nagasaki marked the exact moment 60 years ago that an American airplane appeared in its skies and dropped the plutonium bomb "Fat Man," killing some 80,000 people and sealing Japan's defeat in World War II.
About 6,000 people, including hundreds of aging bomb survivors, crowded into Nagasaki's Peace Memorial Park, just a few hundred meters (yards) from the center of the blast, for a solemn remembrance and moment of silence.
When the silence ended, Nagasaki Mayor Iccho Itoh had some angry words for the leaders of the nuclear powers, and especially the United States.
"To the citizens of the United States of America: We understand your anger and anxiety over the memories of the horror of the 9-11 terrorist attacks," he said.

Comparing Fat Man and Little Boy to the terrorist attacks on 9/11 is intellectual sophistry.
Uh, didn't Japan attack us first?!?! Good grief.
Good.
The weird thing is, you always hear all about Hiroshima, but you almost never hear anything about Nagasaki.
Another stupid thing about comparing Hiroshima/Nagasaki to 9/11 is what happened afterward. When the Japanese surrendered, we went over there and helped them build one of the most prosperous Democratic nations in history.
What happened after 9/11? Did bin Laden come over here and help rebuild the World Trade Center? Did he come to help with reconstruction, and try to build a better, more enlightened nation out of the U.S.?
Let's never forget that those bombs ended a war that Japan started by killing Americans, and if Japan had had the bomb they would never have hesitated to use it against the US.
That being said the two bombs themselves are reported to have killed less people than the Japanese military killed in their rape of China which is conveniently forgotten.
Above all else some Americans are alive today because there was no invasion of the Japanese homeland.
Great point.
Happy Nagasaki Day!
It had better.
"I hate to break this to you, but bin Laden is not a country."
I never thought bin Laden is a country. I thought I had made a good point.
Let me rephrase it, then. Did the terrorists come over to help rebuild the WTC? Did al-Q'aida give personal aid and funding to the rebuilding efforts? These are all things the US did after bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
My point is that it is ridiculous to compare 9/11 to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So there. Take that.
If we hadn't bombed Hiroshima/Nagasaki and ended the war, millions of other Japanese were going to die of starvation....we saved THEM from THAT!
yawn - another imbecilc troll. git him!
It's not about which one caused more destruction. It's about what happened afterwards. Is America better off because of 9/11? Not really. Is Japan better off because of the surrender of the militaristic Emperor? Yes.
I think so, too. What do you do with these guys?
And they're both morally equal to each other? You're at the wrong place try Du.
I'm a new guy. What do you do when you've run across a DU? I think this is my first.
Did you check out his homepage? He just signed up a few minutes ago.
In before the ZOT.......here kitty kitty.....
Welcome to FR. I checked his page to see if he'd been banned yet, but he's working on it.
Duh is where he belongs.
see post 20.
Ah....you've really outted yourself now.....
That's because we damned near missed. American's hate inaccuracy.
Gay troll gets...nuked. ;o)
Interesting....I did NOT know THAT....learn so much here at FR.....THANKS.
Did he/she say something in #24?
Yes.....can't repeat it.....
Boy, those mods are fast. I had time to refresh the page once, see the profanity in his new post 24 and then BAM, gone a few seconds later. Truly impressive. :)
Is he/she/it gone now?
**killing some 80,000 people ***
Has everyone forgotten that after two A-bombs we went back to conventional bombing raids and killed thousands before the surrender?
What gets their panties in a bunch is we used ONE A-bomb on each city. Had we mounted a 100 plane raid on Hiro and Naga and killed as many as we did nothing would be said about it today.
Hmmm, wonder what I missed?
He/she dropped the F-bomb. Probably tripped an alarm with that one. :)
I'm sure "he/she/it" is gone now.....probably to be re-incarnated under some other name, at another time.
Better a couple of nukes than even a few days of incendiary raids.
Dirty and vile. Why do they do things like that?
Even his screen name was a lame Al Franken book title rip-off.
We will never forget Bataan, Mayor. And we can relate that to Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot.
Happy N-day everybody. This affected the surrender of people who:
- conducted surgical experiments against Americans with no Anesthetic.
-Who bayonetted Americans who couldn't keep up the pace of the 60 mile march before stopping.
Fanatical suiciders, like the Islam crazies of today.
Everyone think about that before weeping for the Nagasaki "victims".
They need to read "Faith of Our Fathers" to understand the sacrifices of the American soldier and the hideousness of the Japanese as they tortured Americans.
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. And I'm sure they don't want to do that.
But if the situation were to present itself again, we would nuke them again. No question.
Yeah, just imagine Osama's version of an enlightened USA.

Here's one for you Dr Evil.
Happy Nagasaki Day
Shouldn't have started it in the first place.
"Yeah, just imagine Osama's version of an enlightened USA."
In the ultimate cruel irony, Jane Fonda and Barbara Streisand would be oppressed and forced to wear burqas and veils, no skin allowed to be shown.
There is always a catch.
And if any of them were raped or attacked, they would have no right to defend themselves. In fact, they would be stoned to death for adultery and/or fornication.
