The key thing is to compare whatever recent period people are claiming contains an unusually large number of explosions to the long term average, or just pick periods of similar lengths a year, or 5 years ago.
At this site you can look at any month since 1998.

The reality, of course, is there are industrial fires and explosions all the time, everywhere.
I tell you what....if they all did get out..just like the chemical plant explosion here in the Fort Worth area a couple of weeks ago...NO bad injuries...just one person burned slightly...
Having 2 chem plants explode without any casualties is amazing, IMHO.
Wow, Midland is farther north od Detroit than I thought.
Prayers for all around Romulus/Wayne.
Overnight: Mostly clear, with a low near 71. South southwest wind around 8 mph.

Live Radio from WWJ-AM Detroit (Windows Media Player): http://tuner1.dc1.sonixtream.com/playlists/wwj/wwjWWJAM.asx
i don't appreciate the kool-ad reference, btw. i'm just reflecting what people who witnessed it are feeling.
I work in several (contractor). In the vast majority, safety really is job one.
You better get out soon.
This doesn't sound good.
Stay safe.
WWJ-AM: Flames going up to 100 feet in the air; roads closed and an evacuation in about a one mile radius.
I am not seeing any info on this.
You da man....thanks for the link.
"FORT WORTH, Texas -- A series of explosions rocked a chemical plant in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday and set off a raging fire, sending up a pillar of black smoke that could be seen 30 miles away in Dallas.Company president Bill Davis said there's some indication the ignition source may have been the truck that was unloading," but he said the cause remained under investigation."
This one happened July 29,2005 and STILL under investigation.
Not duPont. Dow, I think.
just upgraded to two miles.
Reporter on Channel 7 says he can see smoke for miles and miles. Hubby and I went out on the porch and we smell nothing. We are approximately 12 miles from the explosion site. The fire seems to be contained.
Sure chemical plants explode, but we ARE at WAR and we HAVE been warned by DHS, etc., about the potential for attacks on chemical plants. The tinfoil comment was completely absurd.
Anyone have a link on a sound news story?
We're staying alert. Thanks for your concern.
the witness said on keg of fluid lit up, the alarm sounded and everyone ran out....then the place just blew
1) All of the previous chemical plant explosions of the past 4 years once investigated, have been found to have accidental causes.
2) There isn't the slightest indication the number of industrial fires and explosions are above normal.
Just be on your guard
You are IT Burbank...you're on this one too?
Thanks for the info. Any link to a news story or can you hear it?
Meterologist in Detroit (Channel 7) says the wind is very very light (almost calm), southerly wind is at 5- 6 mph. Humidity is at 69%. Winds are not likely to get any higher tonight, which is a blessing. I pray for the people that live near this site. There are several neighborhoods in the area.
I am listening to that WWJ newsfeed...
You are welcome.
I am sure if there is a direct threat to your area, they'll be knocking on your door and tell you to get out.
Google earth comes in pretty handy for this sort of thing.
There are strict rules governing the packaging and storage of waste hazmat, but there's still a lot of trust involved on the part of the people who dispose of it. If somebody packaged some waste incorrectly, didn't protect it properly, etc., it's entirely likely it could cause a huge problem.
We are on guard. Thanks.
Google Earth is so freaking amazing I can't believe it. I clicked on your link and before I know it I'm in space, hurtling earthward until I'm about 4000 feet above the chemical plant.
I hope so.
Praying that no one got hurt or killed.
Wow, about 10 more huge explosions just took place. Nothing the fire department can do about this thing, it's massive and will have to burn out on its own. 300 foot flames.
No, that was Union Carbide.
Channel 7 says Metro Airport is reporting no delays. They are directing air traffic around the site.
It's on local TV-Channel 7, Detroit, but the 'net does not have it on yet.
There was NOT an airliner involved, but many witnesses thought so. Sorry for the confusion.
Not unlike some pieces of the plant itself.

But we never heard about these either...
Not anymore.
Yes, local news here in Detroit is reporting NO AIRLINERS were involved.
Man, just massive.
Channel 4 reporter said airport fire dept heading to scene, maybe that's where the rumor came from.
WWJ-AM commentator says 'massive explosions and fires'
All people in the immediate area (GM and Ford plants included) have mandatory orders to evacuate.
Thanks.
That means the wind is moving north. Sorry if that is stating the obvious, but some people get that mixed up.
Glad it is light, but it would be better if the winds would freshen to help dissipate the gasses.
I'm sure they will....and don't call me Shirley.
Smores anyone?
still nothing on Fox or cnn.
