Gimme Shelter from the Hypocrite Rolling Stones
netWMD - The War to Mobilize Democracy ^ | August 10, 2005 | Andrew L. Jaffee

The Rolling Stones’ music has been downright awful since Tattoo You (1981) – but Mick Jagger’s big lips keep on yammering. Mick, the great arrogant hypocrite, with a net worth of $500,000,000.00, and 7 children he couldn’t give a damn about, is now lecturing American conservatives about morality:

The Rolling Stones, not exactly a band at the forefront of rock 'n' roll activism, are taking aim at the American right with a new song on their upcoming album, according to Newsweek magazine.

The track, "Sweet Neo Con," boasts the line, "You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite/You call yourself a patriot, well I think you're full of s---," according to the weekly newsmagazine.

A just what does ol’ Mick, one of the biggest narcissists in the entire known universe, know about patriotism or morality? The Stones are probably the biggest sell-out band of the great 60’s music renaissance.

The Stones aren’t redistributing their wealth. They routinely rip fans off for $300 just for the privilege of hearing Mick’s raunchy voice and watching Keith get more and more ate up every year (see here also). Track marks, anyone?

Yeah. There are some old Rolling Stones songs I treasure. Albums like Beggar’s Banquet will always be close to my heart – just because of the sheer beauty of the music. But I never felt these ruffians were kindred spirits – not like Crosby, Stills, and Nash (forget about that commie Young). You don’t see CSN’s members pinning for the 60’s wilted dreams, like revising Stalin or Ho Chi Min’s history/legacy of bloodletting.

David Crosby, Steven Stills, and Graham Nash flew to Berlin in 1989. They gave a free concert to commemorate the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. They didn’t charge people $300 per head.

I’d like to say something to the Rolling Stones, but I won’t because I’m a civilized person… well, almost. They say a picture is worth a thousand words:

What's the cure for a has-been band about to release a subpar album? Why a "controversial song" of course.

The last Stones album I enjoyed was "Through the Past Darkly", and I still have it in my collection. It might be worth something, if it wasn't so scratched and beat up.

I am highly annoyed that this group of grumpy old men are going to be doing the song for football this season. I'll still watch football, though.

The Verve and The Rolling Stones : Truly Bittersweet
The now defunct British outfit The Verve sampled an orchestration on their song "Bittersweet Symphony" from The Rolling Stone's "The Last Time". Before the release of the album, The Verve negotiated a licensing agreement with The Rolling Stones to use the sample -- at least the composition rights to the sample. In 1997, The Verve's album "Urban Hymns" peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Charts. What ensued was a bitter (and not sweet) legal battle resulting in The Verve turning over 100% of the royalties to the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones argued that The Verve had violated the previous licensing agreement by using too much of the sample in their song. The Verve argued that The Rolling Stones got greedy when the song became successful. Herein lies the issue of moral rights of a samplist.

"The last thing I ever wanted was for my music to be used in a commercial. I'm still sick about it", The Verve's lead singer Richard Ashcroft said in a recent interview. So, that's exactly what Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein did. Capitalizing off the success of the song, Klein licensed The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" to Nike, who proceeded to run a multi-million dollar television campaign using The Verve's song over shots of its sneakers. Klein also used the song to hawk Vauxhall automobiles. Additionally, though the song was authored by The Rolling Stones, the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra performed the sampled recording and also filed suit upon the success of the song. (Herein lies a fine caveat to license both the recording and composition rights from whomever maintains them.) To add even more insult to injury, when "Bittersweet Symphony" was nominated for a Grammy, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were named the nominees and not The Verve. What could be more "Bittersweet" than your song reaching the top of the charts and not being able to enjoy a cent of its success?

"It could've been worse," Ashcroft continued. "If we hadn't fought, 'Symphony' could've ended up on a cheeseburger ad and never have been taken seriously again." Yum.

This is a no brainer. If you want to listen to and buy music in which most of the artists are patriotic and conservative and not feel bad about where your money is going, you gotta switch to Country.

Actually ABC and the NFL did the agreement for Monday Night fottball with the hasbeen stones.

The Disney/ABC suits, along with the NFL don't know their market.

The below is good marketing.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL.

Also, I think ABC's Monday Night ratings have been falling. If NASCAR were smart they would counter program Monday Night NASCAR.

"The Rolling Stones’ music has been downright awful since Tattoo You " Well hell...the truth be known, their last good album was Exile on Main Street in the early 70's...you know, just before their 'Glitter' then 'Disco' periods...truly awful. BUT. Before that they were FANTASTIC...and when you go to one of their shows.....(I have seen 3, in '69, '89, and '99) they were great....and the reason was that they played for the most part, all their GOOD songs...They put on a great show....and I could give a rats ass as to their politics when I am rocking out to songs from....A) their real early period in the early/mid 60's B) songs from Satanic Majesties Request, Let it Bleed, Gimme Shelter, and Exile.. and C) their crowning achievment Beggars Banquet. I also have a smattering of their greatest hits and live works... AND they are F*ckin' great..... Now please excuse my exuberence.....I do disagree with their politics but who cares......ROCK ON

Mick Jagger is a moron.

A Neo-con (i.e. neo-conservative) is a quasi anti-semetic insult.

It is a label applied to Jews who were once Democrats and converted to Republicans. Neo-cons are generally viewed as hyper-supportive of Israel.

Since Bush was never a Democrat or Jewish that I know of; the label of Neo-Con is ridiculous.

When you hear a liberal spout "Neo-con"; it usually means they don't really understand or grasp what the hell they are talking about and are just parroting others.

Some reading on the anti-semitic angle of the word Neo-con.

"You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite/You call yourself a patriot, well I think you're full of s---,"

You call yourself a singer, I call you a dipsh!t/You call yourself an artist, well I think you're full of yourself."

Another drunken old granny who thinks his vapid opinion means something to someone beside himself.

By the way, Mick, you might want to consider something you said 30 years ago:

"I can't see myself strutting around on stage singing 'I can't get no ... satisfaction' when I'm 50."

As Neil Young once said, "Better to burn out than to simply fade away."

Fade away, Mick. You're yesterday.

Good thought, but too many problems getting 100~250k people out on a Monday nite to watch a race. Most have to work Monday day, and again Tues AM. I think that (attendance) is the biggest reason the races are on the weekend.

The Stones were a pretty good ban, taken in the context of the times, but they were never great [musically]. And it's been over 30 years since they did anything worth turning on a radio for.

I'm an old blues/rocker from the 60's, couldn't get no satisfaction in high school /grin. And frankly, I never have given a crap about making rock political. Musicians ain't rocket scientists, duh. Mick Jagger? Why would anyone care what he thinks?

Mick Jagger was a brilliant businessman. Not only did I attend The Stones' concerts in CA -- but I discovered The Stones BEFORE The Beatles. Whoever is making the business decisions for the group now -- is making a mistake. Especially in assuming on the liberal-left bought their albums all these past years. Oh well.

Not questioning the superiority of the Beatles, but after the shennanigans "Sir Paul" pulled at "Live 8" I wouldn't say they knew when to quit. McCartney has been a whacko environmentalist since the 70s, Lennon was more like Lenin through the 70s until he was shot.

Fortunately George and Ringo were my favorite Beatles. They just got rich, polluted their bodies with drugs and alcohol, and shut up about activism.

This, from the mother of his 7th child who wants $35K per month in child support:

John Gibson did his "My Word" piece on a line from that song. Here's his take on it:

"How come you so wrong, my sweet neo-con?" That line is from a song which was written and sung by Rolling Stone Mick Jagger.

A lot of people are talking about how it's Jagger taking a shot at George W. Bush. After all, underneath it all, he's still a Brit. He's in show biz, so that makes him a raving leftie and, of course, he hates George W. Bush. But I don't think it's about Bush. I think it's about Condoleeza Rice.

"How come you so wrong, my sweet neo-con?" Can't you just see Mick's lips wrapping around those lines as he checks out Condi in her "Matrix Reloaded " outfit?

I used to work at Mick's record company. Took him to dinner once. It was 30 years ago. But there's no way he's singing about a guy — George W. Bush — even if it is political commentary. No way.

Well wait. He is getting old. But, still, no way.

My question is this: Since when is the world's biggest troublemaker getting all dewy-eyed and singing peace ballads? Come on.

This is the sympathy for the devil guy. This is the guy who can't get no satisfaction. This is the guy who if he tries sometimes just might get what he needs. This is the guy who has inspired God knows how many American criminals, those tattooed, toothless types you see lurking around places you want to just keep driving through. They all sit around saying, "Well, hell, if it's ok by Mick, I guess it's ok by me. I'll just go beat somebody's head in with a pool cue."

Come on now. That happened and you know it did.

So "how come you so wrong, my sweet neo-con?" Come on, Mick. How come you so wrong about keeping Saddam on his throne? How come you so wrong back home there in Britain about those hate-spewing imams who won't harm anybody? So you think this line is going to go down in rock history? "Can't always get what you want, I can't get no" and "how come you so wrong, my sweet neo-con?" I don't know. Let's wait and hear how he sings it.

Who knows? Good singers make bad lines sound good all the time.

That's My Word.

I never really found neo con to be too insulting really. I am not Jewish but realized after 9/11 (thanks to Hannity, Malzberg and everyone else on WABC radio in NY at the time) that I was a semi-liberal in my 20's. So to me it just means moderate libs that saw the light. Effem if they cant take a joke.
