EL PASO, Texas - Texas has become the fourth state to have a non-white majority population, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday, a trend driven by a surging number of Hispanics moving to the state.
According to the population estimates based on the 2000 Census, about 50.2 percent of Texans are now minorities. In the 2000 Census, minorities made up about 47 percent of the population in the second-largest state.
Texas joins California, New Mexico and Hawaii as states with majority-minority populations with Hispanics the largest group in every state but Hawaii, where it is Asian-Americans.
Five other states Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia, New York and Arizona aren't far behind, with about 40 percent minorities.
Public policy analysts said these states and the country as a whole need to bring minority education and professional achievement to the levels of whites. Otherwise, these areas risk becoming poorer and less competitive.
William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., said lawmakers need to start with immigration reform, while striving to bring minorities' education and salary levels in line with Anglos.
"Immigration is good for the United States ... it's important for us to keep our doors open, but we need to keep an eye on the people coming in," Frey said. "While initially it will be a state problem, eventually it will be a national issue, and education is the best way to deal with it."
Complications from the cultural shift aren't likely to be exclusive to states that already have majority-minority populations, Frey said.
Nevada, for instance, has seen a massive influx of minorities in the last 15 years, reducing the percentage of Anglos since the 1990s from nearly 80 percent to about 60 percent. Such a rapid shift is likely to cause growing pains that include trying to balance the needs of a bigger and younger minority community with an aging Anglo community, Frey said.
"That's the kind of state that is going to have to deal with quick transition," Frey said.
Though some areas may never see this shift, the country as a whole is expected to continue the trend first noticed more than a decade ago.
The nation should be more than half minorities by 2050, said Steve Murdock, a demographer at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
"If you look in the 1990s, in every one of the 50 states, non-Anglo Hispanic populations grew faster than Anglo populations," Murdock said. "It's a very pervasive pattern."

Well they must be coming from other states and moving closer to their ancestral homes... What's that? Oh! they are coming from their ancestral homes in another country...
Already? Hmm. Well Texas is strongly conservative and many Hispanics themselves are Republicans.
I guess if you're a big fan of third world banana republics like Central and South America that are riddled with corruption and poverty and are ruled by murderous dictators and Communist thugs you're a "happy camper" with this news.
Hola, now go back to your country.

MS-13 is a growing problem in Washington DC metro area.
Bush is America's first minority president!
Counting Color, How PC and How un-PC, idiots can never make up their minds, Color-blind or Color-driven, hum along with me...
I Love Texas, we are what we are and we don't need a bunch of .... holes to tell is what or who we are. We were our own Nation (More than Once) and there are times I wish we could re-visit that, (It's the Cowboy in Me)...
((Nashville get a grip, that will be Recorded in Texas!))

And that hack from Brookings, Frey, says we all should pay more than ever to *educate* (codeword for supporting NEA indoctrination) everybody about how the majority-minorities should be *brought up* to the level of whites, or *Anglos*, for the sake of competition.
Not that the white Anglos should be brought down to make sure everything's even, eh Frey? You don't fool me.
Delicious sarcasm

Dammit.
They make up 49.8% of the population vs the 50.2% non white, which in all probablities, are not of the same ethnicity.
Out of all of these new minorities (Who BTW, shouldn't even be counted since they're foreign invaders and not legal residents of the USA) you can't say that all 50.2% of them are of one ethnicity.
Bush's nephew, George P. Bush, is being groomed for the Texas governorship. 41 has locked up the Houston area...43 is planning on buying a home in Dallas at the end of the second term...and the odds are that SMU in Dallas (Laura's alma mater) will get his presidential library. Since George P is hispanic on his mother's side (Jeb's wife), the demographics are locking into place for him to take the governorship in a few years with almost no opposition.
These studies routinely ignore that hispanics are not a race. Many hispanics are white. Of course, this doesn't benefit the poverty pimps and affirmative action hustlers. The 'victim' pool needs to be as large as possible.
Fortunately a lot of these new immigrants are illegal and can't vote,,yet.
We need to make it clear to Pubs who the majority of voters still are ..conservative US citizens who are po'd at politicians that are out to destroy our country.
Most Mexicans are Native Americans, so the population is non white. The white Mexicans don't have any reason to jump the boarder because they're too busy making their country poor so their people come over to our side.
This is going to be great for business when Democrats have a lock on both California AND Texas.
Not happening in Texas. Large hispanic population...but of those who can vote, many do vote Republican. All state-wide elected offices (incl. the Tex. Supreme Court), both U.S. Senate seats, and the majority of the Texas U.S. House delegation, are filled by Republicans.
Texas is as red as California is blue.
No Habla
The illegal alien invasion is the locomotive coming down the tracks at 150 m.p.h. whose destination is to relegate the United States to Third-World status.

Actually, they are just going back to their homeland. Remember, we were the "invaders" once and stole Texas from them in the mexican-american war. It took a couple hundred years but they are finally getting it back.
It won't improve much from here. As more and more hispanics move into Texas, white flight will increase and people will move back into the heartland or midwest.
What's concerning is every state that has had these hispanic population infusions has eventually tilted more democratic as the hispanics become citizens and vote. It'll take a decade or two, but you can bet on it, that Texas will not be nearly as red as it is today.
Gee. I wonder where they're "surging" and "moving" FROM...
TV ads in MA. are airing Learn Spanish tapes.
"MS-13 is a growing problem in Washington DC metro area."
Do you mean the US Congress or the US Senate?
Well spoken, even if it is under your breath.
"Out of all of these new minorities (Who BTW, shouldn't even be counted since they're foreign invaders and not legal residents of the USA) you can't say that all 50.2% of them are of one ethnicity."
Then get them off public assistance!
That light at the end of the tunnel is AN ONCOMING TRAIN!
This means that whites are now the protected class!
Right?!!?
Right?
Hello?
Bush's nephew, George P. Bush, spoke in my area (Pittsburgh PA) on a campaign blitz last year. He's a most impressive young man, very handsome and articulate. His wife came along also, she's an attractive blond Caucasian. My thought was, this young man is going places.
It's surprising how little history Freepers know. The US PURCHASED Texas, as well as parts of CO, NM, and WY from the Mexicans after winning the Mexican-American War. As the easy winners of this war that led to the quick surrender of Mexico City, the US had NO obligation to pay Mexico anything. The price was 15 million dollars...quite a chunk of change in 1848. The deal was outlined in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Look it up. But speaking of "stealing" land, that's what the Spanish did when they mercilessly slaughtered the Aztecs to grab the gold in Mexico. Now THAT was stealing in spades.
Hispanic's are white to me. What exactly makes them not white? A Spanish surname? Dark hair?
>"Hispanic's are white to me. What exactly makes them not white? A Spanish surname? Dark hair?"<
- The official definition (U.S census bureau)of a Hispanic is someone who is (or ancestors were) from a Latin American country who speaks Spanish.
( or whose ancestors spoke Spanish)
It doesn't refer to a race or skin color; only a Spanish speaking heritage.

Yep. George P. and his wife work for major law firms in the Dallas area. Last year, he worked on delivering American expatriate votes for his uncle in the presidential election by campaigning down in Mexico. There are currently about 1 million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico at least part of the year. Kerry sent surrogates too but apparently George P. stole the show.
So comes Alice Through the Looking Glass
I think it was a pretty one-sided negotiation, and the price was the same we'd paid for the Louisiana Purchase 45 years earlier.
