BERKELEY, CA A new nationwide study released today by the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research (BACVR) ranks the political leanings of every American city and finds that Detroit, Michigan is the most liberal and Provo, Utah the most conservative.
In all, the BACVR researchers examined voting patterns of 237 American cities with populations of over 100,000 and ranked them each on liberal and conservative scales.
The list of Americas most liberal cities is dominated by cities with large African American populations that are concentrated in the Northeast, Midwest and California. Conversely, the study found that the staunchest conservative cities are clustered in the South and interior West and have extremely low numbers of African American residents.
Detroit and Provo epitomize Americas political, economic and racial polarization, said Jason Alderman a BACVR director. As the most conservative city in America, Provo is overwhelmingly white and solidly middle class. This is in stark contrast to Detroit, which is impoverished, black and the most liberal. Gary, Indiana, a rust belt former steel town, comes in as Americas second most liberal city, followed by Berkeley, California, which ranks third. Washington, D.C. comes in as the fourth most liberal and Oakland, California comes in fifth.
On the list of the nations most conservative cities, Texas cements its reputation as Americas most rock-ribbed state, having three cities in the top five. Lubbock and Abilene, Texas rank as the second and third most conservative cities, respectively, followed by Hialeah, Florida in fourth place and Plano, Texas in fifth.
BACVR researchers found a direct correlation between a citys political ideology and its racial makeup. The great political divide in America today is not red vs. blue, north vs. south, costal vs. interior or even rich vs. poor it is now clearly black vs. white, said Phil Reiff, a BACVR director.
While there are a few liberal cities without large African American populations, these wind up being the exceptions. College towns like Berkeley and Cambridge have modest black populations but remain bastions of upper middle-class, white, intellectual liberalism. These liberal white communities, however, are more reminiscent of penguins clustering together around a shrinking iceberg than of a vibrant and growing political movement, Reiff said.

The makers of this list have obviously never been to Austin, Texas. It should definitely be in the top 25 liberal.
>>Lubbock and Abilene, Texas rank as the second and third most conservative cities
How does that explain Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, who's from Lubbock?
>> 10 Flint Michigan
19 Corona California
My home town made 19th most conservative. WOW!
SIMI VALLEYmade the LIST??? WHOOO HOOO! PING.
Look at the Conservative ones. Provo? Gilbert? Escondido?
No wonder why Detroit is such a toilet
that's just one person. There are probably 25 conservatives for every liberal there.
I live in 5th most conserv! YES
I can see Philly being on the list of Lib cities, but how did we beat New York? (If only we could do so on the field!)
That shows you how bad these 25 are lol.
Boy I am ashamed, but knew as much anyway.
It would be interesting in rating the quality of life, income, health, crime, etc. of these two lists...
Hialeah, Fla?? LOL!
We make fun of Hialeah all the time.
We didn't make the top 10? That's a shock.
My thoughts exactly. There's already a thread going on this, and Ithaca is missing.
Hey.... they forgot Lake Forest, Ca. (south orange county) maybe be small but solid red. Garden Grove, Ca????? They have alot of liberals in that city including my brother-in-law)
Wow, a lot of depopulating, declining Midwestern cities are on the liberal list.
Lubbock...yeah how about "Waylon and WILLIE and the boys..."
yep. Notice Newark is also in the top 10? Big Surprise...NOT.
and there is NO connection, eh?
BTW, "Intellectual liberalism"? Isn't that an oxymoron??
She was probably dropped on her head several times as a baby.
But on the conservative list, Allentown, PA? Maybe it's been a while, but I thought that was a solid part of the rust belt. Over Lancaster? I guess Lancaster, PA just wasn't large enough.
Is there a Peoria in Arizona?
And, if there is, is it trule more conservative than Peoria, Illinois?
14 Baltimore Maryland
At least we're lower in being liberal than we are in Crime. LOL! HELP!
The study missed Madison, WI locally known as 48 square miles surrounded by reality. May have missed it because it does not have a large minority population and that would dispute their thesis.
Boulder CO would be another one missed on this list. probably santa cruz ca too.
Natalie Maines was anathema in Lubbock after that little incident.
Probably a self-description. They like to think they are smarter than anyone else. LOL
South Dakota didn't make the list?
College towns like Berkeley and Cambridge have modest black populations but remain bastions of upper middle-class, white, intellectual liberalism. These liberal white communities, however, are more reminiscent of penguins clustering together around a shrinking iceberg than of a vibrant and growing political movement,
I've lived in 3 of the top 6 most conservative!
I would like to see this done with the states.
Even the most shapely buttocks can have the occassional boil.
In other words, socialism is succeeding about as well in Detroit as it has elsewhere.
Kind of sums up your typical Democrat, doesn't it? Maybe the Democrats should change their mascot to a penguin.
Easily in the top 5 most liberal.
And what they don't say is that liberalism is what turned Detroit into a toilet. Coming to a city near you soon!
Does any city in South Dakota have 100,000 people?
I seem to remember that Sioux Falls voted heavily for Herseth over Diedrich.
Ann Arbor, MI should be in the top 10.
