Quick-footed criminals hoping to avoid the debilitating shock of a police stun gun could soon be facing a more exacting foe--the "electric bullet."
Stun guns, like the Taser, fire small spears joined to the hand piece with wires. The spears discharge an electric shock and incapacitate the target, but such weapons have a limited range of up to about 30 feet.
The United States Department of Homeland Security is seeking alternatives with broader uses, like light lasers or guns firing electric bullets to combat all manner of felons. (The military, meanwhile, is developing so-called nonlethal weapons such as a millimeter wave device that produces an intense heating sensation.)
"People encountered can range from aggressors who are hardened criminals to mentally disturbed teenagers...from protesting crowds that include children and elderly, to street gangs," the Homeland Security Department, which is soliciting prototypes from the industry, said on its Web site.
According to the New Scientist magazine, several companies have put forward ideas, including the Piezer--which can be fired from a 12-gauge shotgun up to 150 feet, shocking and stunning whoever it hits.
Another company has suggested a "dazzler" that disorientates crowds with a series of bright lights
How about a two man cop team, one carries a bucket of water and the other has a toaster and a backpack generator. If a perp resists, one cop throws the water on him and the other cranks up the generator and tosses the toaster.

I always like the Disruptor better.
They demonstrate with a crossbow bolt and it generates into the the 1,000s of volts of electricity. Yikes!
"Less than lethal" is normally "less than effective" in most instances. In others, even "less than lethal" is quite lethal enough. Tech is good, but I'd prefer reliable.
I Had an old marine boxer as a bouncer on football nights at a burger joint, he would use a small cup of ammonia and rarely had to whoop any body
I have a horrible feeling that Richard Simmons is involved somehow. (no, don't smack me Richard!)
I am holding out for a needler (for you Halo fans)
