Posted on 08/11/2005 7:52:35 PM PDT by Anti-Bubba182

Staff members of the Sept. 11 commission are investigating allegations by a GOP congressman that lead hijacker Mohamed Atta had been identified as a potential threat by a highly classified Defense Department program a year or more before the attacks occurred.

Commission officials confirmed a report in yesterday's New York Times that two staff members interviewed a uniformed military officer, who alleged in July 2004 that a secret program called "Able Danger" had identified Atta as a potential terrorist threat in 1999 or early 2000....."

"....Panel investigators viewed the claim as unlikely..."

"..Weldon recently published a book...Many of the allegations are based on information from a source discounted by the CIA as a fabricator."

The WP is giving a prelude to what I suspect will be its usual oily spin on this. MSM business as usual.

The spin started in the first sentence. That these are "allegations by a GOP congressman". These are NOT his allegations, they are from his intelligence sources, several.

Panel investigators viewed the claim as unlikely in part because Atta was not recruited as an al Qaeda operative until a trip to Afghanistan in 2000 and did not enter the United States until June of that year, officials said.

Is this true?

Didn't the 9/11 commission release its report a long time ago and go out of business?

Is that staff still hanging on? (Like the temporary telephone tax they instituted in 1897 or thereabouts, during the Spanish-American war. But least they are trying to kill that. Again.)

Bill Clinton had a choice.

He had a choice between fooling around with Monica

or taking out Mohammed Atta.

He could have taken out Osama bin Laden.

He choose Monica.

3000 Americans dead.

1000's injured.

Children left without Mom's or Dad's.

Parents left without their children.

War starts.

President Bush must defend and protect our country.

The left screams in bitter vitriol against our President.

President Bush had a choice too.

He had a choice between fooling around with America's National Security or sending the terrorists to Hell.

Soldiers defend and protect our nation and freedom.

They have sacrificed their lives for us.

All because Bill Clinton had a choice but his choice gave us this hell.

President Bush said America " Will Not Falter".

"Will not Fail".

"We Will Hunt'em Down".

And, that by George, we are.

God Bless America.

God Bless her brave and mighty Armed Forces.

Godspeed.

We know you are making the right choice.

Keep On Fighting On! Because America Stands Tall For You!!!

Oh please, a Mass rich snob? The Pres should have killed him 2 to 1.

This story is nothing, rational people understand that Clinton wanted no part of boots on the ground to fight terrorism, because he understood that Americans would not stand for it for as long as it would take, they are soft.

And he understood that his poll # would be squashed with every death, so he chose to use law enforcement.

Everyone also understand the obvious, that our intell is crap when is comes to terrorists, since we have no spys that speak the language.

The commission was set up to undermine the election and Bush, and it did.

And the NY liberals that are the US media will never allow the US use its enormous military power, and win.

Never.

[emphasis added]

The astute reader will notice that it was the 9-11 Commission Staff members who allegedly withheld this info from the Commissioners in the first place. Ergo, we have have a case of the alleged perpetrators being asked to investigate their own wrongdoing.

That sure imbues me with confidence in the predictable results of this "investigation" .....

Essay; Inside The Bunker

By WILLIAM SAFIRE (NYT) Op-Ed 727 words
Late Edition - Final , Section A , Page 27 , Column 1

ABSTRACT - William Safire Op-Ed column on activities at President's Emergency Operations Center, underground facility hardened to withstand blast overpressure from nuclear detonation, to which Secret Service brought Vice Pres Cheney and other high administration officials after World Trade Center attack;

says Secret Service received threat that 'Air Force One is next,' and that is why they did not allow Pres Bush to return to White House immediately; says most troublesome question is ****how did terrorists get code-word information**** and transponder know-how that allowed them to convey their threat; says knowledge of code words and presidential whereabouts and possession of secret procedures indicates terrorists may have mole in White House, or informants in Secret Service, FBI, FAA or CIA (M)

This story is nothing

If it turns out to be true that we could have, and indeed should have, arrested four of the terrorists involved in 9/11 but didn't and that fact was covered up by the 9/11 commission, or staffers of the 9/11 commission, than this story is not nothing. I heard Congressman Weldon today say that he has two intelligence officers related to 'Able Danger' willing to testify under oath that this is the case. Yes we will have to see how this all unfolds but to blow it off as 'nothing' is certainly premature.

John Podhertz at NRO is speculating that the 9/11 Commission squashed this because it disrupted their timeline of Atta's whereabouts. They couldn't have that happen because they didn't want there to be any chance that Atta had met with Iraqi intelligence.

Fuzzy on why, but he feels that this info would leave room for such a meeting in the timeline. Pretty hugh story if all of the sudden there really was a meeting...

The screaming you hear is Howard Dean...again.

Staff members of the Sept. 11 commission

Yes, and just how sharp and 'investigative' do you think these 'staff members' were during their free trip to Asia where they were told this information? Chances are very good that they were enjoying a pretty good night out on the town when the information was given to them. Hard to remember details like that after a taxpayer-paid-for dinner, lots of bubbly and maybe even a taxpayer-paid-for romp in the hay.

No, it's not true. Atta went to Afghanistan in 2000 for training. One of his friends - Mossediq?- is on trial in Germany for convering for Atta and his associates while they went to Afghanistan for training. But they may already have been Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda sympathizers before taking that trip.

NATIONAL COMMISSION ON TERRORIST ATTACKS UPON THE UNITED STATES

Outline of the 9/11 Plot

between November and December of 1999, Atta, Jarrah, Shehhi, and Binalshibh went to Afghanistan, traveling separately

Binalshibh, Atta, and Jarrah met with Bin Ladin’s deputy, Mohamed Atef, who directed them to return to Germany and enroll in flight training. Atta was chosen as the emir, or leader, of the mission. He met with Bin Ladin to discuss the targets: the World Trade Center, which represented the U.S. economy; the Pentagon, a symbol of the U.S. military; and the U.S. Capitol, the perceived source of U.S. policy in support of Israel. The White House was also on the list, as Bin Ladin considered it a political symbol and wanted to attack it as well. KSM and Binalshibh have both stated that, in early 2000, Shehhi, Atta, and Binalshibh met with KSM in Karachi for training that included learning about life in the United States and how to read airline schedules.

By early March 2000, all four new al Qaeda recruits were back in Germany. They began researching flight schools in Europe, but quickly found that training in the United States would be cheaper and faster. Atta, Shehhi, and Jarrah obtained U.S. visas, but Binalshibh—the sole Yemeni in the group—was rejected repeatedly. In the spring of 2000, Atta, Shehhi, and Jarrah prepared to travel to the United States to begin flight training. Binalshibh would remain behind and help coordinate the operation, serving as a link between KSM and Atta.

While Jarrah took these personal trips, Atta traveled to Germany for an early January 2001 meeting with Ramzi Binalshibh. Atta reported that the pilots had completed their training and were awaiting further instruction from al Qaeda. After the meeting, Atta returned to Florida and Binalshibh headed to Afghanistan to brief the al Qaeda leadership. As soon as Atta returned to Florida, Shehhi took his foreign trip, an unexplained eight-day sojourn to Casablanca.

Not sure the last time the CIA was right about anything though: Slam dunk on WMD's...not so much. 9/11...not so much. Berlin Wall coming down, collapse of the evil empire, Soviet coup attempt...not so much.

With people like Valerie Plame working for them, I wonder how much of the CIA bureacracy is like the cesspool at the State Department. Certainly some incredibly capable folks there but you wonder what kind of a voice they have.

Who cares besides those who know that, and who knows that but us? And we will be the only ones who know it, as usual.

Better to spend our efforts destroying each reporter and their bosses, reputation by reputation, brick by brick, until they are dead.

That's a joke, right?
Congress should be investigating the "9/11 Commission" and its staffers. I believe that the omission of the "Able Danger" intelligence from the commission's report was deliberate and malicious. With national security at stake, this commission can no longer be dismissed as just a mischievous laughingstock - - it may have conducted itself in a criminal manner.

The commissioners were the face of the "9/11 Commission", and we can name them all. But I believe that it is indeed now time to get a little bit more info on the staffers. How many staffers were there? How were they chosen? Did each commissioner choose his/her own staff? Who were these people?

the former Deputy AG in New York Attorney General Spitzer’s office, Dietrich Snell, who joined the 9/11 Commission staff as a ‘team leader’, investigates what Lance exposes as one of the big unanswered questions surrounding the attacks—why was the indictment (under Snell’s own ’96 prosecution) and ‘hunt’ for Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the alleged 9/11 mastermind (now in CIA custody), kept secret for over eighteen months? When Lance was interviewed by Snell in New York on March 15th Lance asked the conflicted 9/11 Commission staffer this simple question. Not surprisingly, he was rebuffed as Snell calmly cited national security and continued with his interview.
