But can they fly? Last I heard spare parts were hard to come by.

Also, how many of these are re-marked Iraqi planes that the Mullas were hiding for (and from) Saddam?

These are models.

None of the iranian fighters are Saddam's air planes!

The Shah bought them in 1970s

So what vintage are these photos (of the actual a/c, not
the models)?

Are any of these still airworthy?

The Shah had actually ordered 160 F-16's and 250 F-18's, Khomeini canceled the orders. If the Shah had remained in power Saddam would not have dared attack, or been trounced if he had. You can thank Jimmy Carters "human rights" policy.

Whoever built those models did a very fine job. Most of them look like they were Hasegawa kits.

Hangar areas and aprons on real a/c look exceedingly clean. "Static display" models?
Good pic's, Thanks.

Well...the F4 was a damn good fighter in its day. We were still using them well into the 80's.

I just can't imagine that Iran has the spare parts for our old aircraft (though I imagine they can get some off the black market). I'm sure China has sold them planes though...probably some of our so called allies in NATO too.

He even sent an USAF general, I think Huyser was the name, to convince the Shahs generals to hand over power to Khomeini. Many who took the advice were soon deceased.

I wonder what country the Iranians will fly away and hide in, once we start bombing their illegal nuclear weapons factories.

Your home page is magnificent. I had the pleasure of visiting Tehran and a number of other cities, courtesy of the US Army, during the mid-70's. One of the best places I have ever traveled. Historical, beautiful and with hospitality beyond imagination.

Just read it, a keeper. It was right on the money about Carter. He was indeed the worst President in history. He is a vile and bitter old man. He is wholly anti-American.

Iran has done a good job keeping these planes in the air. No, they cannot get regular spare parts, but when a part needs replacing, Iran goes to China and has the part reverse-engineered, then a replacement is created. This is also how Iran still has operational Phoenix missiles for it's F-14s. I used to have a real good picture on one of the Iranian P-3s buzzing us in the Gulf. Whenever a USN ship goes through the Straits, the Iranians make it a point to buzz the ship low and slow (and I mean low.... I could make out the pilot's face).

Iraqi Mi-24 (1991 photo)

The Mi-24 Hind saw considerable use by the Iraqi Army during the long war with their neighbour, it's heavy armament causing much death and destruction amongst Iranian ground forces. The Iraqi Hinds also participated in air combat with Iranian AH-1J SeaCobras on several seperate occassions, ending favorably for the Iraqis with ten AH-1Js downed by Hinds compared to six Hinds downed by AH-1Js. One Hind even shot down an Iranian F-4 Phantom on 26 October, 1986.

We were still using them well into the 80's.

F4G's in the Wild Weasel role were used in Desert Storm and weren't retired until the mid 90's.

Interesting... the Demo team F5 are marked up very similarly to the USAF Thunderbirds... also I was not aware the IIAF had any F16... and also they still have US missiles and stores... I would have expected them to be all expended in the Iran-Iraq war

I think some people on this thread are a little confused. All of these pictures are of models. Very well done models, but they aren't real. And Iran does not have any F-16's.
