While it may be a mythically elaborated account, I think that the Atlantis story was probably inspired by the Minoan settlements on what is now Santorini.

Atlantis is always placed near "the Pillars of Hercules". Trouble is, there are many proposed locations for the Pillars. I doubt that the Straits of Gibraltar would be the location. It's just my guess that us common folk fall for the trap that Atlantis must have been located in or very near to the Atlantic Ocean. If you really think about it the Ocean probably got it's name much later after the legend had a chance to get very garbled.

As fascinating as the Minoan civilization is I just don't buy that it is Atlantis.There is a theory that the type o negative blooded people of Spain, the Atlas mountains and the Canary Islands are the probable survivors of Atlantis.The Greek myths about the titans are related to Atlantis.The Giants in Genesis may also be references to Atlantis.
