yup, Helms definitly was for states rights, and a small government Republican.
There's getting to be fewer and fewer of 'em. I'm noticing a growing number of Republicans who are now quite content with, and even encourage growth of the Federal govt.
Helms rated number one on the Conservative Index several years in a row. That's good enough for me.
Ol' Jesse H is a race baiter, known for his ads featuring the wife of the opponent of a man for whom he was working dancing with a black man. This was the point of the ad, the fact that she was dancing with a black man. Most of us here know his famous Hands ad where a white man loses his job to a black man because of affirmative action. I'm non-white and strongly oppose affirmative action, I feel that it is racist. Supporting Jesse Helms because he's good on every other issue is the same as how liberals support Robert Byrd despite his Grand Kleagleness. I am colorblind when it comes to race; I do not demonize Southerners and do not wish to make an issue of race, but I call it like I see it.
If you want to defend Jesse Helms' unapologetically segregationist record, be my guest.

Jesse Helms always said "no" to communists, which was all the anti-apartheid crew in South Africa were--and are. Check out where their funding came from, and who took over that sorry country after most of the whites were chased out. (I've spoken to many of them; thousands ended up here in N.C.)

So some communists were members of the anti-apartheid movement. Some communists were members of the American Civil Rights movement. Most of the people in both battles were however people committed to civil rights. It is true that the ANC is a liberal party, but I would much rather see them in charge than the apartheid National Party. The ANC has been and is currently in a majority coalition government with the South African Communist Party, but I think fighting the evil of racism far outweighs having a right of center government. We allied with the communists in World War II and many liberals fought in the war. By the reasoning of you and Jesse Helms, you oppose anything that Communists support.
I see that you're both not white and a product of the government school system. So, here's a taste of reality:
Anything that communists oppose, a person who loves freedom supports.
Anything that a person who loves freedom supports, a communist opposes.

A blanket statement that fits well with your reasoning. At the outset of the war, Communist Russia supported the Nazi grab of power in central Europe. Stalin even hoped to muscle in on the action, specifically eyeing the breadbasket of Eastern Europe as an addition to Mother Russia. We only allied with Russia because Hitler betrayed Stalin, not because of ideological pandering. And yes, I do oppose anything Communists support. Especially the murders of more human beings than Hitler could have dreamed of.

I think it's one of those hard calls, depending upon what you knew of the BIG picture at the time. Helm's hard stance was the CORRECT ONE: In re limiting government involvement at the federal level -- But I can also see it from Bob Tyrrell's pov.
I am not bothered by opinions like "youthgonewild's", and because I prefer to rely upon my own research -- and my own research has proven without a doubt that Helms was not a racist.
I think the days of simply repeating ad hominems (racist, homophobe, sexist, ad nauseum) -- as being used predominantly by the left for purposes of censorship - are coming to a close.
For example, Cindy Sheehan's fatal "pr" flaw, IMHO? "Bush killed my son". Sure, there are others -- like her anti-Israel, pro-socialist positions don't help her -- but her broad brush -- "Bush Killed My Son" is so over the top in hysteria.
I guess some have forgotten that President Bush and Team enacted legislation to put a cap on frivolous, deep-pocketing, lawsuits.
Sad to say, but Cindy Sheehan has become the image magnified of that woman who spilled hot coffee on herself but sued MacDonalds.
Conservatism is not dead, in my humble assessment, it's just not always directly "verbalized" -- but instead? I see conservatism ACTING -- doing things -- instead of 'talking' things.
The "acting" as passing and enacting of those things conservative, is far more real and positive than mere words.
The "mere words (aka: truth to power) gang -- has to use "words" -- it's all they have, the socialists and communists around the world - threats, negatives, ad hominems. Ergo, they are Blowing In the Wind. While the true players move quietly, doing the work.
That's laughable coming from a newbie the the gall to lecture mhking on race issues.
