A few years ago my wife and I were visiting Detroit. Having
a little extra time we decided to drive over to the Grosse Pointe area and drive along Lake Shore Drive. This is an affluent area of Detroit with beautiful homes. We then drove west off Lake Shore to gain access to I-94. Just a few blocks in off Lake Shore Drive we drove thru areas that were completely blighted ... what struck us was the contrast between Grosse Pointe and the area immediately west of it ... the contrast was night and day.

They wouldn't be abandoned homes if the Mayor wasn't dropping the Socialism ball. He should be out rounding up all the homeless to be placed in these homes. Turn the heat and gas back on and send the government the bill and let them raise taxes to cover it.

I'm considering that, too, but for entirely different reasons. Since my loved ones are buried on a piece of prime real estate and the Supreme Court Decision on eminent domain, I don't know how long they will remain inviolate.

There's no safety anywhere, really, but I'm going to talk to my sister about moving them to a smaller rural cemetery in a small town that doesn't have much prospects for urban growth or sprawl.

But then again, who knows the changes looming in the next 50 to 100 years? Des Moines is a lot like this, too. Block and blocks of boarded up houses, nice large ones that could have been rennovated. Nobody in their right mind wants to be a landlord, I should say slumlord, any more because who needs all the deadbeats, drugs, graffiti, and property damage done by people who only care to destroy and not build?

This isn't really anything new, but the scope is broader. There are hundreds of abandoned or seriously declining small towns across America, particularly in the west.

I remember hearing stories of people fixing up all those homes...guess that was B.S. eh? I remember working the Detroit Grand Prix in the 90s, and they stationed motorcycle officers along every corner from downtown to Grand Isle. I asked someone why they did that, and they said they were afraid visitors would be manhandled by the locals.
