A number of years ago, when I was about 22 and had my first professional job, I was working at the lab bench next to a black guy. I didn't know him personally at all, but on a professional level we were friendly enough. One day he handed me an asprin bottle and asked me to open it up for him. I was a little surprised, as he was bigger than I am (and I'm 6' 2"). He said something along the lines of "We've picked enough cotton", so I opened it up and took the cotton out for him.
I don't think it was aimed at me - he never put me in any uncomfortable position otherwise.
Ah, since when don't ministers have to pay income tax? Now, if a church owns property it doesn't have to pay property tax, but I'm pretty sure a minister has to pay income tax on his or her income.

I don't blame blacks or anyone else for not wanting to pick fruit, or bale hay, I have done it. It is back breaking labor and you work for chump change. That was okay when I was a kid doing work for the summer.
The problem I see with this new immigration policy is that illegals won't be coming here soley to do farm work. They are working other jobs for contractors at minimum wage. Some of the contractors are doing government work. Also, under the new policy it says if the employer can not find an American to fill a job he can fill it with a foriegner.
Just how hard do you think these employers are going to look for an American when they know that can get and Indian, Pakistani or other immigrant to do it cheaper?
If they had to pay these immigrants the same wages and benefits as Americans would they be so hot to hire them. I doubt it.

I too have picked cotton. If a pound of cotton could be sold and the proceeds would buy as much of other things as was the case in the fifties then I could go into the field after the mechanical picker has left and gather a good living from the leftovers.
