Cindy Sheehan's Sinister Piffle - What's Wrong With Her Crawford Protest. (Great Editorial!)
Slate ^ | 8/15/05 | Christopher Hitchins

Posted on 08/15/2005 12:19:57 PM PDT by areafiftyone

Here is an unambivalent statement: "The moral authority of parents who bury children killed in Iraq is absolute."

And, now, here's another:

Am I emotional? Yes, my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the army to protect America, not Israel. Am I stupid? No, I know full well that my son, my family, this nation and this world were betrayed by George Bush who was influenced by the neo-con PNAC agendas after 9/11. We were told that we were attacked on 9/11 because the terrorists hate our freedoms and democracy … not for the real reason, because the Arab Muslims who attacked us hate our middle-eastern foreign policy.

The first statement comes from Maureen Dowd, in her New York Times column of Aug. 10. The second statement comes from Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq last year. It was sent to the editors of ABC's Nightline on March 15. In her article, Dowd was arguing that Sheehan's moral authority was absolute.

I am at a complete loss to see how these two positions can be made compatible. Sheehan has obviously taken a short course in the Michael Moore/Ramsey Clark school of Iraq analysis and has not succeeded in making it one atom more elegant or persuasive.

Finally, I think one must deny to anyone the right to ventriloquize the dead. Casey Sheehan joined up as a responsible adult volunteer. Are we so sure that he would have wanted to see his mother acquiring "a knack for P.R." and announcing that he was killed in a war for a Jewish cabal? This is just as objectionable, on logical as well as moral grounds, as the old pro-war argument that the dead "must not have died in vain." I distrust anyone who claims to speak for the fallen, and I distrust even more the hysterical noncombatants who exploit the grief of those who have to bury them.

Well said, Mr. Hitchens.

Very interesting read. I particularly liked the end:

"Finally, I think one must deny to anyone the right to ventriloquize the dead. Casey Sheehan joined up as a responsible adult volunteer. I won't say anything negative about this woman, although I may think it really, really loudly in my brain.

I just hope time will bring her heart back to what's most important and she'll leave the podium in her past.

"...Sheehan now says that if need be she will "follow" the president "to Washington,..."

Don't we have "stalker laws" and aren't most stalkers a little un-hinged? Cindy and her "it's all about me" tirades, just flumes of anti-American rhetoric, showing how unstable the woman is, should not be allowed within miles of the President. The woman should be locked up and the key thrown away. She wouldn't know grief if it jumped up and bit her! What she has done to her son’s memory is unconscionable.

PANAC Leftie version: Project for the New American Century (PNAC) Project for the New American Century is a neo-conservative think-tank that promotes an ideology of total U.S. world domination through the use of force

Rightie version: The Project for the New American Century is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for America and for the world; and that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle.

I don't think I can come up with six without research, but I gotta do some work between FReeping episodes. Offhand, though, I offer Howard Dean. After his screech, the MSM bludgeoned him so bad he fell outta the race. As I recollect, Sean Penn was hit as well after his "Trip For Bloodthirsty Tyrants" on the eve of the invasion.

In 1985, my 2 and 1/2 year old son died. I believed then and believe now that the treatment or lack thereof he received from his doctor contributed to his death. I wrote the doctor a letter which detailed the reasons for that belief. The last thing I or my wife wanted was to set eyes again on that man. Therefore, although different people deal with grief in different ways, in my opinion Sheehan's desire to see the President a second time is based more on her political views than her need to assuage her grief.

Dowd says, "The moral authority of parents who bury children killed in Iraq is absolute."
Of course, that standard only applies to parents who disagree with the war. Thos parents who support the war are obviously dupes, or simpleton hillbillies.

Cindy Sheehan, Maureen Dowd and the rest of the Leftists have not cornered the market on virtue and nobility...they think they have.

This story is a perfect example of the diffrence between the left and the right; the left uses this woman for political gain while the right is reluctant to trot out parents who support the war.

I'd say Dean was mocked by the MSM but certainly not ripped limb from limb. And when was Penn ripped apart by the MSM? By the right, sure, but when by the left? He was seen as someone who "marched to his own drummer," and I can't recall a single MSM figure ripping him.

Looking at her on TV this morning she looked
like someone having a grand old time down there
in Texas.
With her rant, "It's all about the Jooos!" she
has revealed herself for what she really is, and
it's nothing honorable.
Her son's memory deserves better than this.

Wonder if she's offered to give back the burial Flag she was given after her son died? After all, it is a symbol of our Nation. I'd think it would make her physically ill to look at it.

I can't agree with either of you. To say that Casey joined just to get away from his Mother is to denigrate his memory as much as she is doing. He was an adult who joined and he re-joined. It appears the rest of the Sheehan family is pro-military and thankfully influenced him more than his mother. There would have been plenty of other avenues to "escape" his mom if that was his intention.

Offhand, though, I offer Howard Dean. After his screech, the MSM bludgeoned him so bad he fell outta the race.

Doesn't count. I predicted long in advance of the events that the Old Media would take Dean down if it looked like he was going to lead the dems over the cliff. They did. But they did it only to help Kerry beat an R.

It's the same with the media's fawning over McCain. They only like him because they can torture the R's with him. The moment he runs against a D, the media will suddenly pull their lips off his hindquarters, pull out a shiv, and stab him in the heart. They will suddenly remember the Keating scandal and notice that McCain is just a little crazy. Johnny will not know what hit him.

So the Old Media gets credit for neither Dean nor McCain. The question should have been posed, has the old media ever trashed a leftist in a way that hurt the left. I can't think of a single time.

Any citizen has the right to petition the president for redress of grievance, or for that matter to insult him to his face. But the potential number of such people is very large, and you don't have the right to cut in line by having so much free time that you can set up camp near his drive.

Very well said.
