CNN's Bob Costas refuses to host show about Natalee Holloway (wtg Bob Costas)
AP ^ | August 19, 2005 | AP

(NY-AP) August 19, 2005 - The story of a missing Alabama teenager in Aruba had CNN searching for a plan-'C' last night. Bob Costas, the occasional fill-in on the network's "Larry King Live," refused to anchor Thursday night's show because it was primarily about the search for Natalee Holloway.

Costas has released a statement saying that he suggested alternatives for the show, but that "producers preferred the topics they had chosen." His manager would not say what Costas didn't like about the topic.

The show's senior executive producer says that Costas was uncomfortable with the subject matter, and that the decision was mutual because of that.

Chris Pixley had to fill in at the last minute on a show where seven of the ten guests talked about the missing girl.

Damn, now I will have to watch the guy, I did not much care for some of his coverage during the past Olympics.

But, I admire anyone who will stand up and refuse to do a show.

Costas Refuses to Host Show on Holloway

By DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer

August 19, 2005, 9:10 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- While some cable TV hosts are making their living off the Natalee Holloway case this summer, Bob Costas is having none of it.

Costas, hired by CNN as an occasional fill-in on "Larry King Live," refused to anchor Thursday's show because it was primarily about the Alabama teenager who went missing in Aruba. Chris Pixley filled in at the last minute.

"I didn't think the subject matter of Thursday's show was the kind of broadcast I should be doing," Costas said in a statement. "I suggested some alternatives but the producers preferred the topics they had chosen. I was fine with that, and respectfully declined to participate."

Costas' manager declined to elaborate on what Costas didn't like about the topic.

Thursday's guests included Beth Holloway Twitty, the girl's mother; a television reporter; and an investigator in the case. Seven of the show's 10 guests talked about the missing girl, the other segments were about the BTK killer.

The Holloway case has been a big attraction on cable news networks during a slow news period, with Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren getting record ratings as she's paid almost nonstop attention to it. Reports of Costas' decision first surfaced on the mediabistro.com Web site on Friday.

"There were no hard feelings at all," Costas said. "It's not a big deal. I'm sure there are countless topics that will be mutually acceptable in the future."

Wendy Walker, senior executive producer of "Larry King Live," described it as a mutual decision for Costas not to do the show because he was uncomfortable with the subject matter.

"We love having Bob ... and since `Larry King Live' covers an extremely extensive palate of subjects, there will always be shows that he will enjoy hosting," she said.

The NBC Sports personality, also host of "Costas Now" on HBO, had agreed to be host for about 20 editions of "Larry King Live" this year. He's done six, the network said. His decision is reminiscent of Keith Olbermann, the former sportscaster who left his MSNBC news show in the late 1990s in part because he was asked to repeatedly cover the Monica Lewinsky story. Olbermann is back now for his second run at MSNBC.

Reminds me of when Olbermann quit in a huff because he didn't want to do any more shows about Monica. This is grandstanding by Costas, trying to draw some attention to himself. He's just Larry King with better hair....

I couldn't give a guy kudos who'd work for CNN in the first place.

CNN's dirty money lines his wallet. Whether he presents a Halloway story or not, he's benefiting from a network that would (what do I mean would, they do) sell our nation out. Nuff said...

I was kind of worried what the reaction might be to my WTG Bob, but I am well envious. I am stuck having to watch what they want me to watch, he actually had a say in what he did not want to watch.

I was talking to my beloved earlier. I had mentioned how frustrated I was with the endless coverage of a case that I have no way to make a difference in, other than prayers. I know it is the job of her mom to keep the story at the front but goodness give us some news. It is the same news just wrapped with different paper.

My heart is heavy when I think, why the hell aren't these cable hosts (not sure they are journalists) taking time to talk about Matt Maupin? The young man, who did his parents proud, who joined the military, who was snatched over a year ago. Who has not been heard from and who has been recently promoted.

Where are the cracker jack investigative reporters? Greta, Joe, Geraldo, Bill the list goes on. There is no news on the MIA/POW SGT Maupin, but, hell shouldn't he be right up there and again I cannot do anything to help, but lets be fair, the parents of Maupin must be in deep despair. They have not bitched to the President like Sheehan, they are waiting patiently for their son to return through their front door.

But, oh yeah, we need to talk about Natalee, I guess her mother is much more important than military mom, who's son is somewhere, anywhere, sound familiar, yeah, sounds like Natalee but it is just some military guy.

I am pissed I am beyond pissed. I want folks to join with me, to say enough is enough. If you disagree about the coverage that is OK, but let's just get SGT Maupin's name back on the front burner, write the cable shows, your local networks pick up a bracelet and wear it proudly HE IS THE ONLY MIA/POW in this war, we OWE it to him.

Cable news folks, keep going in the direction you are going and I will give the remote to the pup's to play with.

END OF RANT.

What in the world is there possibly left to say? Greta was down to doing stories about what the two Kalpoe (I can't spell it) boys did when they were released from prison (I don't care). She was interviewing their classmates, she interviewed anyone who was even peripherally associated with any of the suspects. What in the world is left to say?

You know it is not about CNN, but it was refreshing to see someone who was not going to be a hack to another's agenda.

I am angry, but, you know who is lost in all of this on all the networks. The only ONE MIA/POW SGT Matt Maupin, where is the coverage about him. I guess it is because he is a military guy and the military takes care of it's own.

I can say this, the Holloway mom, should think long and hard about the Maupin family it seems her daughter rates more coverage than a fine soldier serving our country and snagged and probably and sadly has met his death.

Great to see you friend, been a while.

It is admirable the Costas took a stand on this issue.

I don't know, and quite frankly, I'm at the point where I don't care any more.

The girl is most likely dead; at this point, everything that the news networks (And Greta - I blame her probably more than anyone for prostituting the story to begin wtih) have to say is simply "porn." People are leering at this like it's some kind of surreal peep show.

Good rant but sadly half our country is anti-war and TV shows are all about ratings. They stick with whatever pulls in the crowd but most of us get tired of the same thing all the time.

I saw a quick shot of Greta walking the street talking about some couple that disappeared in a van or something. Looks like that may be the next hot story!!!

LOL, I didn't realize you used to work there. Sorry my criteria was broad enough to snare you.

Back in the 80s, I used to watch the network. FoxNews wasn't available in my area and shows like Crossfire weren't too bad. Yes there were lefties, but they were fairly well counterbalanced by Novak and Buchanan.

I don't watch much CNN these days, hardly at all. Every time I turn on the network for a minute or two I am more or less shocked by what I see.

Look, all organizations have some good people working for them. Sorry to have offended you.

Costas is a sycophant---a nerdy nobody talking head. When he interviewed Hilliary Costas wished for her to impart her wisdom and asked the b***h:

“How, from where you sit, have you maintained your dignity and how can you be so controlled under circumstances that would be trying for the best of us?”

If he can interview an evil psycho like Hiliary he could devote some time to the search for Natalee.

Yeah the story is old, stale, hackneyed and relying on pure speculation- however- Greta's numbers have skyrocketed with this story (2nd on cable news behind O'-f'n- Reilly). Costas does not get paid to produce or direct programming- maybe he ought to do a story on The Olympics as Anachronism.

Costas has released a statement saying that he suggested alternatives for the show

Costas' offered alternatives:

1. The blasphemy of the DH rule in baseball.

2. Pete Rose - villain or hero?

3. A tribute to Vin Scully

4. The infield fly rule - a historical perspective.
