NCAA: Tribe's support a factor. NCAA committee could review matter next week.
Tallahassee Democrat ^ | 8/20/05 | Steve Ellis

Florida State was here just two weeks ago - seemingly on the cusp of a favorable decision by the NCAA regarding its Seminoles nickname and imagery. The NCAA said Friday that approval from a "namesake" tribe will be considered a primary factor when the review process begins next week for schools appealing the use of American Indian nicknames and symbols. That should be a positive development for FSU, one of 18 schools that the NCAA Executive Committee ruled on Aug.5 to have "hostile or abusive" nicknames, symbols or imagery.

"We're very encouraged by (the NCAA) using the word 'namesake' tribe," Wetherell said. "We're very encouraged by the idea that there are unique relationships that need to be considered - not a blanket policy. I think the idea that they're trying to clear 'em up relatively quick is a good move. ... Those things are encouraging to us but we still want to see the final letter saying that Florida State can go forward."

The Seminole Tribe of Florida formally backed FSU on June17. Partly because of that support, FSU President T.K. Wetherell had not expected the Executive Committee's decision two weeks ago that would ban FSU from hosting NCAA postseason events or displaying the Seminoles nickname or related logos and imagery in such events after Feb.1. FSU appealed the decision on Aug.12, and at this point is the only school to have filed an appeal. But Utah and North Dakota are planning to appeal, officials from both schools said. Wetherell has asked the NCAA to make a decision by Aug.29, the first day of fall classes. He has promised court action if the NCAA decision is not reversed.

The review process will be conducted by the NCAA staff and headed by Bernard Franklin, senior vice president for governance and membership. The NCAA said "the staff's decisions may be reviewed by the NCAA's Executive Committee."

Wetherell did not know whether FSU's case will be reviewed next week and has not been given a timetable.

"I'm assuming sooner than later," he said. "What sooner means, I don't know. We still believe by the 29th we need to have it resolved, and they seem to be amenable to that."

The NCAA Executive Committee met late Thursday to approve the appeals process, and NCAA President Myles Brand issued a statement Friday.

"We recognize that there are many points of view associated with this issue, and we also know that some Native American groups support the use of mascots and imagery and some do not; that is why we will pay particular attention to special circumstances associated with each institution," Brand said.

Well and good, but when Stanford was forced to do away with their "Indian" mascot, what tribe could have spoken for them?

It would be better if the left and the media simply dropped the idea that mascots somehow are derogatory toward the namesakes chosen. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The mascots were chosen to be revered by the student body. (Of course there is a certain amount of derision by the opposing team, but that too is to be expected.

Think of the cost savings if we simply dropped the matter of political correctness and lived our our lives "live and let live". Why not?

Now on to the most rediculous banning of the group.

The Utes of Utah.

What are the Utah schools supposed to do, or more importantly the announcers during the NCAA Hoop Tourney.

The mascot is named for a tribe, the state is named for the tribe.

The non-mascotted team from the state currently named after the unspeakable.

Well, they could always get some guys from Mumbai to endorse the Indians, and have the leaders of the firemen give the OK to the Chiefs.

I officially request that we no longer refer to the negro league as the negro league (baseball). Hence forth, we will call it the "alternative league". Negro is an offensive word to the rich white guys in New York. Do not worry about what the players of this league prefer, do not worry about what the fans of this league prefer. They do not understand the hurt they are causing these rich white guys (and the rich white kids with terrible grooming habits). We must save you from yourselves.

And while I'm at it, I live in Illinois, so am I now an Illini every day of the year except when the NCAA is having its tournaments? When di the NCAA get to limit my freedom of speech.

I remember when they were the Utah Redskins. The name was changed to Utes.

This whole thing is absolutely assinine on the part of the politically incorect NCAA. Who in God's name made them jury and executioner in these matters. It is none of their cotton pickin' business!

Not to mention that the NAACP needs to change their name to eliminate that degrading reference to "colored people." Most black people I know bristle at the term "colored people" and it's imperative that this organization change their name post-haste lest it continue to offend.

How about the Prime Minister of India?

Here is a can of worms that I don't think the NCAA has realized that they have opened. They have stated that the ban doesn't apply to bowl games because they are not sanctioned by the NCAA. Thus, they are saying that they have no authority over bowl games. If that is the case, then they have no authority to ban teams from participation in bowl games as a punishment for rules violations. The teams can tell them to shove it.

I personally think they'll back down in the case of the Florida State University Seminoles and the University of Utah Utes mostly because the NCAA does NOT want to face a multimillion-dollar First Amendment rights lawsuit.

I would just like to see a school say that they will abide by the policy, and if they make the playoffs their mascot will be the "pc lunatic administrators".

Instead of banning time-honored names of college football teams that have been around for years, let's just ban the NCAA. I'm sure that if enough colleges and universities got together and told the NCAA just where to get off this situation would quickly end, along with the NCAA.

It's not a First Amendment issue because the government is not involved.

With that being said, the grounds of the lawsuit will be that the NCAA does not have the authority under the rules agreed to by the participating institutions to dictate mascot policy.

In fact, the same executive committee ruled exactly that a few years ago.

As Algore would say... "no controlling logo authority."

I was thinking something similar, but more along the lines of if a school with the weight and stature as FSU. Were to tell the NCAA to pound sand and start their own sports associations. That many other schools would most likely follow.

The NCAA is becoming so out of touch with reality it's driving me insane. Not only have they begun pursuing this ideology of the left that they know better what's good for American Indians than the tribes themselves (witness the FSU situation), but Sports Illustrated also reports that fans of the University of Georgia found out that a father of a Boise State player is in Iraq training Iraqi police officers, and therefore set up a charity fund to fly the Boise State father into Georgia so that he could watch his son play.

Unfortunately, the NCAA quashed the charity because under their rules, monetary benefits are prohibited, and this supposedly qualified.

The NCAA apparently can't differentiate between the letter and spirit of their own bylaws.

It is my personal view that the NCAA has long outlived its purpose and usefulness and should cease to exist. The only other option is for all member schools to fire the current leadership, and replace them with sane people.

Multi-million dollar judgements be d*mned!

I humbly suggest the following:

1. The offending NCAA officials should be scalped. I am assuming the the pudgy, bureaucratic, bachelor's children have any hair left on their microcephalic crania.

2. All scalpings to occur at half time. Let's have a real show that all sports fans can appreciate.

3. No more than one scalping per college. The boost in ticket sales and TV rights should be fairly and evenly distributed.

;-)
