Punishing Disobedient Wives
Arab News ^ | Tuesday, 23, August, 2005 (18, Rajab, 1426) | Ghada Al-Hori Al-Watan

I find it unacceptable when some people twist the meaning of a particular verse in the Holy Qur’an — especially the one which permits a husband to beat his disobedient wife. Those who do the twisting must understand that the permission is only given under certain circumstances and that the beating is intended as a remedy for specific situations. It is unfortunate that some well-known and respected Muslim scholars have either willingly or unwillingly joined a campaign seeking to distort the meaning of that particular verse.

In many cases, they have given a different meaning from the one actually intended
...
It is quite obvious here that Islam adopts a gradual approach starting with verbal admonishment of the wife, then seeks a period of refraining from conjugal relations and, finally, if the husband finds the situation very serious, he may strike his disobedient wife.
...
A rebellious woman who is not moved by kind works, persuasion and admonition is a woman of no feeling and must therefore be punished by beating. Psychiatrists tell us of people, including women, for whom a cure lies in beating.

The controversy over the beating of disloyal and rebellious women is part of the campaign against Islam. If beating disobedient wives was advocated by Western scientists, it would have been widely supported by the same people who criticize Islam and special centers would have been set up all over the world to train husbands on how to beat their wives.

Our scholars should focus on explaining to people, especially the young, the real teachings of Islam in order to avoid causing uncertainty and confusion.

"permission is only given under certain circumstances and that the beating is intended as a remedy for specific situations."

I am glad he cleared that up for me.

Wow! I'm glad that this guy is taking a more progressive perspective to the whole Islam/wife beating issue (with much sarcasm dripping).

Ah, disciplining your wife by beating her. The one part of the Koran we can all agree on. (Ducks, runs out of the house slamming the door behind him, jumps in the car and drives several miles away from the pursuing crowd). :-)

a period of refraining from conjugal relations

Seriously, I never found this to be much of a punishment to my wife. This is pretty much proof that Mohammed didn't understand the relationship between men and women at all.

I think the rest of the world knows "the real teachings of Islam".

Geez even their psychiatrists are nuts.

Well, grown women. Mohammed understood that when you strike a nine year old "wife", they seldom hit back.

I suppose Islam adopts a similarly gradual approach to terrorism. Start with verbal admonishment, then seek a period of refraining from diplomatic relations -- and only then, after you've tried everything else and they just won't listen -- then fly some airplanes into their skyscrapers.

What a shame that some benighted souls so egregiously misunderstand the Holy Qu'ran!

A rebellious woman who is not moved by kind works, persuasion and admonition is a woman of no feeling and must therefore be punished by beating. Psychiatrists tell us of people, including women, for whom a cure lies in beating.

I think there may be some psychiatrists for whom a cure lies in beating.

Didn't Mohammed also advocate sexual contact with minors?

"Beating" ANY human being unless in times of self defense (or defense of others) is debased behavior. Perhaps you should question who it is who advocated to you to "beat (the) wife" instead of questioning those who question your source.

Unless what the point is is that the "wives" pose a threat to a "husband's" "self defense," in which case they are only exerting a self defense in "beating" the "wife."

I'd buy that last part, given that most who use pugalism in interpersonal relationships (at least, of the "beating" proportions), certainly those who engage in violence in interpersonal relationships, most claim that they are victimized by those they "beat."

It seems that Mohammed has written the perfect rationalization for the threatened, cowardly male. Again, I write, perhaps you should question the source. Or question motivations for subjecting oneself to such a source.

Afraid not. It's a real editorial in a Saudi paper.

Any person who feels the need to beat spouse, child, or pet to correct their behavior should live their life alone. (And seek professional help.)

HEY, what do you suppose Mohammed would "teach" as to a wife with a license to carry? A wife with personal defenses and self worth in tact? "Beat" her, I'm thinking. Seems about all he could come up with...

It is never acceptable to beat your wife. Ever.

No loving God would allow it. Clearly he is trying to tell us that Islam, is not a loving god trying to help his children improve the human condition.

The foolish author destroys his own argument when he quotes from the Koran ;" And to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct" so a woman can be punished based upon her husbands fear?...what slop!
